Wikimania, or other events done by a third party?

<pre>Hello everyone,

Wikimedia Hungary has recieved an interesting "sales pitch" today if we can
call a two liner that.

One of the largest Hungarian travelling agency's department (or
subsidiary?) for conference tourism have expressed interest in organizing a
Wikimania in Budapest, Hungary in 2015 in cooperation with WMHU. (My
understanding is that WMHU would be a content advisor or similar in it)
They've expressed interest in individual workshops as well (of course).

They've emailed us the bidding page for Wikimania 2015 [1] and the blog
entry about the Program Evaluation Workshop that will be held in June in
Budapest [2] (I guess) to underline their interest (and inadvertently
highlight they're actively monitioring these events)

I believe you already have the questions in your mind about this; here are
my ones:

1) What if a third party applies to create an event? (like a workshop or
Wikimania)

It is not prohibited for a for profit company to create a bid, nor they
have the necessity to consult or cooperat</pre>

Selection of winning bid for Wikimania 2014: London

<pre>Dear Wikimedians,

On behalf of the Wikimania 2014 selection Jury, after review and
evaluation of the two final bids, we have awarded the conference to
London. Congratulations to the London team, and to the Arusha team who
also put forward a solid effort.

We were concerned this year to see that both bidding teams put forward
proposals which were costly and complicated, in contrast to the
Wikimania tradition. The Jury briefly considered re-opening the bid
for other teams, and asked both bids to present a simpler core budget
and lower-cost options for attendees.

The London team took our comments to heart and decreased their core
budget to 20% of their initial proposal, and have committed to finding
ways to reduce the cost for community attendees.

We encourage future bidding teams to not give up their dreams, to keep
aiming for the stars, but at the same time, to not forget the spirit
of Wikimedia: a volunteer movement that makes creative use of limited
resources. We look forward to the proposed Wikimania Co</pre>

Learning from our experiences from previous Wikimanias &amp; Wikimedia
conferences
we think that we shall provided a good online map, [1]
to help you to familiarized yourself before you get to Hong Kong.

We actually started this map during our bidding process,
and we have made some updates recently, deleted some not related and
out-of-date info

Also considering the accommodations will probably be really scattered
around HK,
so we would also like to pin out the places where WM entities already
reserved for their members or a place we know a number of Wikipedians will
stay in,
in order to make you easier to locate each other and find a place to meet.
[2]

A recent addition on the map is about food, the local team's choice.
These are actually some local restaurants even the local team will visit
regularly
and they are not so expensive and with some stories behind
so do read the description on the map.

been broken, pointing to some abandoned server in Amsterdam. It looks
like the videos were never uploaded to Commons, perhaps due to file

I just noticed that the Wayback Machine has copies of most of them:

Any takers for getting these up on Commons? I noticed that
unfortunately files &gt;100MB seem cut off including the higher quality
copies, so unless there's other copies of these around, it'll be hard
to recover them. (This may be a limit on archive.org's crawler, or it
may be a limit on how much content they serve. I suspect it's the
former, but will ping them as well.)

<pre>Dear all,

A small group of long-time Wikimaniacs have been working on the
perrenial plan to produce a "Wikimania Committee" - a community group
who would help steer Wikimania from year to year, advising each local
hosting team and ensuring that the processes are open, transparent and
community-led.

Here are our drafts of what we think we'd want the committee to be
like, a charter, and the resolution which we're submitting to the WMF Board:

* https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_Committee
* https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_Committee/Charter
* https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_resolutions/Wikimania_Committee

Comments are very welcome; we're trying to get this done fairly
quickly, and of course we will iterate these plans as we get feedback
and hopefully more forward on the oft-stalled next steps.

<pre>Hi,

I spoke in January of a Wikitrain from Europe to Hong Kong [1,2]. Now it’s
time to precisely plan the travel and request visas.

I am no more sure I will be able to travel given external constraints and
will know it in some weeks (depending of the date of my PdD defense). But
if other people are interested to travel, you can begin planning the
travel and I will try to join if I can.

Shujen Chang and Park1996 prepared a nice table with train options and
they can provide assistance for the Wikitrain passengers (Wikitrainers?)
in China. At the very least, the travel from Europe lengths 12-13 days (1
day to Berlin, 4 days to Moscow, 6 days to Beijing, 1 day to HK).

Maybe there was some public planning or discussion (or even something

<pre>Hi there,

I was wondering if the Hong Kong locals can give us some advice on
traveling to Shenzhen after the conference this year, since it's so close
to HK.

When I contacted the Chinese embassy in Serbia, they told me that I'd need
a regular tourist visa for China (which is somewhat tedious to obtain) or,
if I want to visit Shenzhen Special Economic Zone only, I can get a "group
Shenzhen visa" (whatever that is).

However, About.com [1] says that for Shenzhen SEZ, one can just buy the
visa at the border.

Can some of you tell me what the reality is and whether you are perhaps
planning on organizing a tour after the conference (say, on Monday)?

there isn't a general community input section, where people unaffiliated
with the bidding or judging process can say things as basic as "I would

or opposed to specific bids or bid locations. I realize that the bidding
process is not a democracy, and that such a selection criteria would convey
significant advantages to cities/countries that have a large number of
users or are especially effective at mobilizing users to comment, but if
many more users want to go to one location over another, shouldn't that be
taken into account?

One thing I am sorry to tell you that, the dorm of PolyU is not available
due to renovation in this summer.
So we have arrange the dorm of another university in Kowloon, Baptist

However, the BU dorm is not in the walking distance to PolyU,
but it is still in a very convenient location, just two MTR stations away

and we will also arrange shuttle in the morning, to getting most people to

We estimate there are still a number of beds that can be available as

<pre>Dear Wikimaniacs,

Hello again from the 2013 local team for a break from the Wikimania 2014
bid discussions!

Every candidate applying for Wikimania 2013 scholarships should have
received an email in the past two weeks saying either their application was
unsuccessful, or their application is still being considered.
Commiserations to all unsuccessful candidates - we hope we can still see
you at Wikimania and around the Wikimedia projects.

This year we received over 1200 applications for scholarships; about 700
made it past the first round. It is expected that a total of about 125 WMF
scholarships and 75 chapter scholarships will be allocated to the best
applicants among applicants who advanced past the first round. Candidates
should hear about the decisions regarding their applications by the end of
April.

Don't hesitate to contact the Wikimania 2013 local team at *wikimania-p
[at] wikimedia.hk* or the scholarship team at *wikimania-scholarships [at]
wikimedia.org* .

With best wishes,

gathering info on past wikimanias

<pre>Dearest Wikimaniacs,

(this is mostly for past organizers, but also attendees and
information-gatherers...)

I am once again (still?) on a drive to organize information about past
Wikimanias in a comprehensible, easy-to-find format. Please help!

See the bolded pages here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania/past
lots of information is missing from all of the years. Links to reports are
fine; I'm just trying to make everything findable in one place. If you see
fields that need to be added please do so as well.

Thanks,
Phoebe
