Dear Sanskrit Community

I'm writing to inform you that I plan to leave my current role supporting Wikimedia in India. I am going to be exploring opportunities and evaluating options that are closer to my career aspirations and my personal circumstances. I will be working through to ensure that there is a smooth transition - and this is likely to take 2-3 months. I am writing now because I felt it appropriate and opportune to inform you as early as possible.

I want to start off by thanking the Wikimedia community and movement for giving me this extraordinary opportunity. Working on something like India Program has been something that has been professionally enriching and personally fulfilling. Over the past 1 1/2 years, I have been supported by so many of you - and I want to thank you for everything you have done! The passion and intellectual firepower of our community has been my constant source of drive and guidance. There are so many examples of powerful stories from all over the country: the incr

Dear All

I wanted to share with you an update on the work that Shiju[1] is doing on Indic languages[2] as part of India Program.[3] A guiding principle for the thinking and efforts of our team is that community building should be the most essential aspect of all the work that we do. In the context of small Indic communities, Shiju has been working to try and identify the various elements that need to come together to foster community building. This update is about the Community Building pilot[4] that was run for the Assamese community. For context, community building means different things to different people and in fact there was a very interesting post[5] that Shiju put out that articulated his thinking on this and, hence, our priorities.

The results of these efforts have been outstanding
number of editors on Assamese Wikipedia has increased to 31 in April 2012 (from 18 in December 2011 and just 10 in November 2011.)
number of Wikiprojects increased to 6 (from a situation where there were no reason

*Acclaimed author and linguist Umberto Eco once compared languages to
biological creatures. A language, he said, follows an organic lifespan - it
is born, it grows old, and it passes away. If the analogy holds, then
Sanskrit, one of the most ancient of tongues which originated in India,
seems to be living the last of its grizzled and decrepit years.

There has been talk of declaring it a dead language, and some believe that
it is only a matter of time before this language too goes the way of
ancient Greek and Latin. But this is likely only if the labour and constant
endeavours of the Sanskrit community - a body comprising scholars and
students of the language present in Gurgaon and other parts of the country
- fail to bear fruit.

Dear All,

I am writing to share with you a very inspiring initiative regarding health
and medicine articles on Wikipedia. Crores of Wikipedia readers read up
about health related issues either when they or their loved ones fall ill
or before or after they have consulted doctors or when they are curious
about a particular disease or drug. In fact, quite a few doctors and
nurses also read up these articles to improve their knowledge.

Wikipedia's medical articles have 15-20 crore page views every month. The
top 300 articles are viewed more than 1 lakh times every month. The
challenge is that the majority of these articles are only available in
English.

This initiative (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medicine/Translation_task_force)
has been conceptualised by WikiProject Medicine, Wikimedia Canada and very
interesting organisation called Translators Without Borders. It seeks to
translate a set of 80 of the most important health care articles into as
many languages as possible.

for the year 2011. In this report, my aim is to provide an *analysis* as
well as *my perspectives* on the health of various Indic language
communities as well as the state of various Indic language wikipedias for
the year 2011. (The period of analysis is editor contributions between 2011
January 1 and 2011 December 31). As always, a lot of the data for this
report and analysis are based on the statistical data published at

information.

I must also point out that this annual update contains a number of insights
*that are derived not only from this data but directly from community
members* who have shared a very real-world picture.

A few months ago, the Foundation asked Tory Read to travel to India and listen and learn and write about the movement in India. The objective was to harvest experiences and learnings and to have an open discussion around what we could all do to further the movement.

This isn't in the form of a (possibly) long & boring report - but in the form of a story. (Tory's a professional researcher, writer and former journalist.) To put this together, Tory travelled for a couple of weeks across Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and across towns in Kerala - attending community meet-ups and meeting up/speaking with a host of individual community members (in these cities and indeed beyond.)

Tory's tale is called, "The India Chronicles", and is available on Wikimedia Commons: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_India_Chronicles_(150dpi).pdf

Do have a read through and do share your views on it - positives and negatives - and do feel free to comment on any aspect of it. It would be wonderful to have an engagi

Hi Folks,

I thought I’ll share an update with you’ll on the Wikipedia India Education Program. It's running majorly in 2 colleges in Pune (Symbiosis School of Economics and College of Engineering Pune). We already have over 1000 students enrolled from just these 2 colleges. Most of these students have gone through one or more out of a total of 35 introductory, basic editing and refresher sessions conducted by Campus Ambassadors.

It’s good to see big numbers but I thought I’ll also share with you some articles that the students have been working on. It’s really inspiring to see their progress! J

Greetings,

As many of you are aware, the Wikipedia India Education Program works with
teachers and students to encourage Wikipedia in the classroom. The basic
idea is that teachers ask their students to edit Wikipedia articles instead
of submitting traditional reports, assignments, etc. Students and teachers
are trained and supported and motivated by Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors -
who are volunteers. We currently have 1,000 students in the pilot we are
running in Pune; the response has been amazing!

There are huge challenges also. Most of the students have already been
taught the basics of Wikipedia by their Campus Ambassadors. However, they
need more hel

I am writing to all of you to correct a potential error. As you might be aware, the Wikimedia Foundation has set itself an important objective of supporting the community in India to expand participation. As part of this, India Programs has been set up - and I work for it.

I have put together a plan for India (please see http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_India_Programs) - and I had communicated this on the India mailing list. This has generated interest as well as debate and discussion. However, I understand that some of you might not be on that mailing list. I therefore thought I'd correct this by reaching out directly to you and requesting you to have a look at the page and share your comments (on the Talk Page or on this mailing list or directly to me; my contact details are in my signature.) It outines the thinking behind India Programs, key initiatives, milestones, team structure, visit reports, IRC logs, recommendations on office location and some other details. very much relevant and important projects. Perhaps it might have more number
of source texts (which are in public domain) than most of the Indian
languages.

A request for Sanskrit wikisource is logged on 2010 October
04<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages/Wikisource_Sanskrit>.
The request was approved by the language committee on 2010 November 04, and
finally the wiki is created on *2011 March 18* <http://sa.wikisource.org/>.
It is available here: http://sa.wikisource.org

Most of the text from Old Wikisource <http://wikisource.org> is already
migrated to this new wikisource <http://sa.wikisource.org>. A cleanup is

Hindi Wikisource Project

Dear Hindi Wikimedians,

A proposal was made in May 2008 to incubate and start-up the Hindi
Wikisource Project. Before the transition, the Oldwikisource Hindi
project had over 1500 pages. This content needs to be exported to a
new Wikisource platform which has not yet been approved because Hindi
interface requires further translation of messages. There are over
250 messages that need to be translated before the project may be
approved. This should be treated on a priority basis.

If you are interested in supporting the localization efforts, please
visit the proposal page on Meta[1] and comment. If you require
translator rights assigned on translatewiki.net please contact either
John Vandenberg[2] or me offlist. Thanks.
