Some good news from Zagreb, Croatia

Dear All,

Just wanted to share some good news with you about a campaign that some
of you might remember: Zelena akcija and Right to the City's 'Varsavska'
campaign where we tried to stop the construction of a shopping centre,
luxury flats, underground car park and especially the ramp into the car
park that took away some of Zagreb's small pedestrian zone in the city
centre.

The main part of the campaign ended in Spring 2011 when the shopping
centre and car park opened. Although we didn't win that battle, both the
shopping centre and the car park were smaller than they were originally
planned to be, partly thanks to our activities.

But as a result of the campaign the city assembly asked for changes to
the General Urban Plan of the city to make sure that such a project
would never happen again (this was important as several similar projects
were planned in the city centre). This has taken ages to actually happen
and as yesterday was the last sitting of the City Assembly before the
local electio

Great work, Joel!

I love the new channel!

The Venice life videos are a great new addition, a nice gentle
approach to imparting ideas and impressions. The "gritty details" of
the carfree cities concept is also excellent.

I found it took only a minute or two to create a Vimeo account and
then "like" all the videos, plus click the "Follow" box to become a
follower of the carfree channel. It's very speedy!

Everyone: I encourage you to do the same, to help get more attention
on this quintessential concept. And, obviously, "share" widely. Please
do!

Dear Carbusting WCNers, WCN-loving Carbusters, and bulletin readers!

As those of you following the bulletin - monthly carfree newsletter -
should have read earlier, there was a decision made late last year to
combine the Bulletin with Carbusters, and have both work in a combo way, on
website and electronic distribution (with the possibility for local
printing by interested orgs). Since then, an editors email group was
started, to oversee this project. Yet precious little else has happened.

I have come to realize that even on the editors group there are not a lot
of people with lots of time on their hands, and I now see that more people
will be needed who are enthusiastic, can at least commit to a certain (not
huge, but useful) amount of time, and then work towards the goal. However,
under the current conditions, I can not foresee myself mostly
single-handedly bringing this CB-Bulletin joining/transformation about.
Without additional help, i could at most agree to put out a simple
bulletin, as earlier, on a

Well our letter to the EC on rail cuts didn't get much coverage, but at
least it has been mentioned twice in European Voice, which for those of
you outside the EU is a pretty important Brussels-based publication.

We've had a holding reply from the Transport Commissioner but nothing
else yet so Simon and I will soon take follow-up steps.

All the best,

Get cross-border rail back on track
By Dave Keating - Today, 03:35 CET

The scrapping of classic train services in favour of high-speed, more
expensive alternatives is a problem happening all over Europe
Members of the Dutch national parliament joined their Belgian colleagues
in Brussels on Monday (28 January) to interrogate railway bosses about
the spectacular collapse of the high-speed Fyra train service between
the two countries that had been launched on 9 December. Perhaps
unsurprisingly, the Dutch MPs decided to drive rather than take the

bad news on pollution deaths to stimulate heightened carfree advocacy?

Hi all,

Daniel Mourek brought this to my attention:
http://energyindemand.com/2012/12/19/pollution-from-cars-is-devastating/

It paints a very bleak picture of what pollution is doing in China and
India due to the staggering number of new cars that are hitting the
roads. The story even quotes Rajendra Pachauri, head of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, saying that cars should
curbed.

Should WCN reach out to IPCC?
Is there anyone in India still active? I'm thinking of Kalpesh Kirti
of Greenmile Foundation or Faizan Jawed, last on the Steering
Committee, or Rajendra Ravi, from an environmental NGO, or others.

In any case, this demands action.

Don’t Let The EU Parliament Ignore 100 Million Cyclists

This Tuesday, the European Parliament will decide if billions
will be made available for cycling infrastructure and EuroVelo. ECF and
its members are calling upon the cycling world to make their voice
heard by putting pressure on the Parliament’s Transport Committee.
There are 35 million daily cyclists in Europe. There are more than
100 million Europeans that cycle regularly. The European Institutions
however are failing to take cycling seriously as a mode of Transport.
Strategic EU documents keep failing to mention cycling and it is at risk of being sidelined by more powerful lobby interests.

It’s Time For This To Change

Important budgets are being decided between now and 2014.
Please spread the word among the members of the network !.

Berlin, 7 December 2012.

As
new rail timetables come into effect across Europe this Sunday, the
World Carfree Network has issued an open letter to the
European Commission warning of the increasingly drastic cuts to EU
cross-border passenger rail services, and calling for immediate action
to maximise rail's potential and reach the EU's own transport and
climate policy goals.

This weekend all direct trains between
Barcelona and Milan and Zurich, Bucharest and Belgrade, and Brussels and
The Hague will be lost, while severe cuts will affect other
international routes to/from: Belgium (23 trains), Bosnia (all except 2
to Croatia cut), Croatia (34 out of 56
international trains cut or part-cut) and Serbia (14 out of 24
international trains to other capital cities cut).

These new
blows to cross-border rail come on top of cuts in recent years that
have already seen the loss of all international passenger trains to and
from Greece, together with all direct trains – among others – from
Brussels

Hi All,

To update you on our activities around Croatian Railways, we got
information from Croatian Railways today that the day train
Zagreb-Sarajevo-Ploce will run next year after all.

So now 24-26 of the current 56 trains will run next year (one pair only
in summer) and 30 will be cut. Most of the ones to be cut are local
lines and we have contacted local mayors to see if there is any interest
on their side in saving these cross-border connections.

I'll keep you updated. Thanks to all the people who've signed and spread
the petition - although we've heard that some of the changes are most
likely as a result of pressure from governments in the neighbouring
countries, our petition has provided what was quite possibly the first
sign ever that the general public in Croatia and other countries will
actually notice if Croatian Railways cuts its train services, and I'm
sure it has contributed to the decisions.

Soon we will be coming up with some activities on the European level
too, as the problem

Hi Everybody.

Thanks for your thoughts on the links between environmentalism and
carism. After some thought and questions I've decided on a course of
action and would like some help.

I'd like to create a cheat-sheet on what is wrong with cars. By this I
mean to generate a list of blanket statements like "cars emit greenhouse
gases," "cars release oil into storm sewers," "cars are responsible for
increased hospital costs." And on and on...

Each blanket statement would be a link. Each link would point to a page
of links detailing information on that statement.

I'd like feedback on the idea itself and also methods of construction.
The purpose of the cheat-sheet would be a starting point in conversationwith environmentalists and climate "experts" who refuse
to reject car culture.

My background has little to do with research; I'm willing but not
practiced at this. I find people pointing me toward books and I see a
problem: a link that points to a book title will go nowhere. S

Good opportunity for media work if anyone has the capacity?

EXCLUSIVE: The EU pledges funding worth billions of euros to the
automotive industry up 2020 in a leaked draft of its cars strategy, to
be presented today (8 November). The new strategy comes amid a wave of
announced factory closures and lay-offs in the sector but was criticised
by Green activists for lacking ambition on C0_2 emission cuts.

Antonio Tajani, EU Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship, is
due to present the 'Cars 2020' strategy to reporters on Thursday (8
November).

In the draft document, seen by EurActiv, the EU executive says it
intends to support the growth of the automotive sector into 20% of
European GDP by 2020, from its current level of 16%, laying out a number
of financing mechanisms for the sector.

The document earmarks a share of the planned EUR80 billion 'Horizon

Of course we know the intense negative effects of cars and especially too
many cars. We find the best changes come from putting forward positive,
fun, alternative scenarios.

For instance, with the right clothes, it is really amazing to bicycle and
walk in very cold weather, like we have here in Missoula, Montana. We are
a top ten American city for bicycling, despite the cold and snow. It is
invigorating and keeps the heart pumping. We have a good transit system,
and some car-share too (for those that need it).

Cities are being rebuilt and reimagined every day. Let's keep up the
efforts for healthy, prosperous, walkable and bikable communities.

Hello.

I volunteer for several environmental groups in Vancouver Canada. One
thing they seem to have in common is a belief that the use of cars is a
necessary evil within their organizations. I can send many examples, if
requested, but I'm sure you've all seen it.

Canada and the US are stuck in a well orchestrated car culture - no
doubt about it - and the natural resources of Canada are now hijacked by
foreign corporate giants. Their government lobby efforts and PR machines
are in full force here.

My great concern, now, is that our new batch of young environmentalists
can't leave their cars behind. This is not particularly new, but seems to
be more pronounced than it used to be. Our environmental movements can't
move forward with this kind of base line.

I have no particular influence within Vancouver's environmental movement,
however I want to affect this one component of change: I want these groups
to weigh the value of each member's opinion and motivation with respect to

JOIN our online action: Croatian Railways - reconsider cross-border cuts plans!

Dear Friends,

/(Hrvatski dolje)/

Every year, thousands of people come from other European countries to
Croatia's beautiful coast for holidays by train or use the train to
visit their relatives and friends. But as of December this year,
cross-border train travel to and from Croatia is about to get a whole
lot more difficult: Croatian Railways has announced
http://www.hznet.hr/medunarodni-prijevoz that it is to cut 44 out of 56
daily international services, and even two of the remaining ones would
run in summer only.

Rail is the most environmentally acceptable mode of long-distance
transport, with relatively low pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
In Europe many people also consider it a pleasant and comfortable way to
travel. It is therefore not surprising that the European Union -- which
Croatia is joining next year -- has a transport policy stipulating that
by 2050 most medium-distance passenger travel should be by rail. It is
ironic that, at a time when Croatia is joining the EU, its ra
