are others such as go. For some time I have been visiting your web and
some things, and I would like to help the project but I don't have much
of idea of OSes (well a bit), I tried to search something about that
but all I can find it's OS specific (mainly Linux) or Tanenbaum's book,
I thought neither of both were good, the first because it's OS specific
and the second because I think it's full of POSIX things (since it's
most MINIX code). So I would like some book were I could learn all the
necessary , or at least the basics, for HelenOS development. Or if not
a book, it could be a list of minimum knowledge. As a side note I would
to help in the desktop part (graphics, applications ...) so if someone
can send me info about that it would be really helpful.

I have absolutely no idea if we have any chances of being accepted (one

<pre>Hi HelenOS developers,

This is my first time mailing a question to the HelenOS mailing list and
it's about HelenOS on sparc64. I downloaded the HelenOS boot-able ISO for
Ultrasparc processors and tried to use it on my SunBlade 2500 which has two
UltraSparc IIIi "Enchilada" processors and 16GB of RAM. Now I am able to
get it to boot but it appears to hang after the message "Booting the
kernel...". I also get this same problem when using QEMU sparc64 emulation.

I guess my question is has it actually crashed or is the output for the
console going to the serial port?
Did "jump_to_kernel(..." send the program counter off into oblivion?

Another general question I suppose is what is the current state of the
Sparc64 port for HelenOS? I would like to try and help write drivers to
support hardware for both Sparc64 and possibly some ARM system, I have an
A10 I would also like to try and get HelenOS running on.

I would like to help contribute I have some experience with Linux kernel
hacking and I know Sparc V8/V9 a</pre>

Problems with reading and writing to the serial port at the same time

<pre>Yesterday, we (as in JS, MS and me) briefly touched some existing issues
with using the serial port driver for both reading and writing at the
same time. Martin, I thought this topic deserves some more attention, so
I wanted to state what problems I know about so that you can check your
own findings and add to the list, if you know of some other issues:

- #508 Parallel sessions don't mix well with call forwarding

This problem is making it impossible to have a parallel session opened
to a serial service using `loc_service_connect()' on the respective
_service_ path. However, due to the way this bug works, it is possible
to establish the parallel session using `devman_device_connect()` on the
respective _device_ path.

Note that the parallel sessions are one of the two possible ways to
access the device for both reading and writing at the same time. The
fibrils executing the char_dev_read() call can block inside the ns8250
driver, while fibrils executing the char_dev_write() can proceed without
being blocked</pre>

<pre>Hi,
I'm working on IP broadcast and trying to write some testing code for it.
I have the following problem: changed files are in the
uspace/srv/inet/inetsrv/ directory,
testing code must be in uspace/app/ directory, and I can't figure out how
to do the
linking correctly without moving inetsrv code (with all dependencies) into
libc.
Solution is probably trivial, but after ten days I still can't find it, so
any advice will be
really appreciated.

By the way, are these functions (in uspace/srv/inet/inetsrv) meant to be
called directly,
or through IPC subsystem? From the source code, it looks like the former,
but they are in uspace/srv/, so I am not completely sure.

I would like to inform you that there will be an outage of all the
services hosted on helenos.org on Saturday May 18th 2013 starting at
1700 UTC. The reason for the outage is a major upgrade of the physical
machine running the domain.

The outage will affect the HelenOS web site, HelenOS Trac (i.e. wiki,
tickets, etc.), the mainline repository of HelenOS and also the HelenOS
mailing lists (because they are hosted on the same physical machine). If
you need to access the central mainline Bazaar repository of HelenOS
during the outage, please use the mirror at Launchpad [1].

The main outage should not last for more than 2 hours, however some
services might return to a fully usable state as late as during Sunday
May 19th. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.

<pre>Hello!

I was going to take part in GSoC 2013 on HelenOS' side, implementing
VESA-compatible driver (ticket #520), but HelenOS wasn't accepted.
During preparation I made some steps to port software to execute BIOS
real-mode code from user space. At first, I tried library from
http://gitorious.org/x86emu. I've ported library succesfully and was
able to get VESA modes, but can't set. Later it become clear that was
my mistake: I've sent reference to pio_write_ instead of value. But at
first I blamed library and tried to use the other one, from NetBSD.
Finding out the reason of setmode failing, I've decided to stay with
*BSD's library because of its simplicity and more fine-grained
controllability. The library from the link above is a bit
overbloated...

So, I decided to share my results. Of course, this is far from video
driver, but I hope it'll be helpful.
You will need 2 patches sent earlier: patch to allow mapping of
realmode IVT and setjmp bugfix patch. The latter was commited but the
former wasn't because </pre>

libmbr & hdisk update

<pre>Dear fellow HelenOS developers,

I have just uploaded latest version of my libmbr (library for MBR
manipulation) and hdisk (HelenOS's partition editor). The branch is here:
https://launchpad.net/hdisk.

libmbr seems fully functional, reading/writing primary and logical
partitions. No implicit limitations imposed. Libmbr checks inputs, keeps
consistent list of partitions and checks for return values (so it's
nothing like concept or heavy-development stuff). It shouldn't change very
much from now on.

hdisk is quite simple yet powerful. Although it's not very user-friendly
so far, you can do pretty much anything with it. It is quite easily
extensible, so it can support other partition table formats (GPT on the
way). It surely has bugs and space for improvement.

libgpt is still under development, but it is already included. So far you
can check the code, but don't expect it work.

Any constructive criticism/comments regarding anything are very welcome.
