HAST - documentation unclear to me

<pre>Hi,

again I'm in the need of building a FreeBSD cluster (for loadbalancing
purposes, not for failover purposes). Still GFS, GPFS or OCFS2 isn't
ported to FreeBSD yet, so I was reading about HAST. The one point I do
not get is the following part:

"[..] HAST works in Primary-Secondary (Master-Backup, Master-Slave)
configuration, which means that only one of the cluster nodes can be
active at any given time. Active node will be called Primary node. This
is the node that will be able to handle I/O requests to HAST-managed
devices. [...]"

IMHO this can mean two things:

1) Only the Master can be operational, the slave is in standby (and
therefor can not be used as loadbalancing system)

2) Slave can be operational too, but on a write-access to the slave it
will be sent to the master, that syncs it back to the slave again (which
will cost performance but will work).

Does anyone of you have an idea which option (1 or 2) is the way HAST
will work?

If option 1 is the behaviour of HAST:

HA storage, diskless booting, clustering

<pre>Hi everyone!

It seems that I brought diskless booting back to life in FreeBSD 7.2 and
now I'm about to try it in 8.2 together with HAST. It seems that nothing
relevant has changed in diskless since 7.2. The official docs also seem
outdated, so it's a good playground for my experiments and I'm very
happy about my quick and dirty hacks. Or clean...? Who knows? :-)

First of all prepare your HAST environment with this guide:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/disks-hast.html
- SSD disks and gigE are fast enough, so don't be afraid of it! Just use
attached ifstated.conf instead of the devd.conf in order to avoid
split-brain situations.
- Configure all that HAST, pfsync, CARP and other stuff to get this
"Gemini" system working.

When your HA storage is alive, go ahead and:
- prepare your PXE environment (incl. DHCP) and tftpboot, like:
/hast/pxe/tftpboot/
/hast/pxe/tftpboot/boot
/hast/pxe/tftpboot/boot/defaults
...
/hast/pxe/tftpboot/boot/firmware
...
/hast/pxe/tftpboot/boot/kernel
...

anoncvs1.freebsd.org down?

<pre>Hi,
Just tried to pull ports from anoncvs again, and it looks like
anoncvs1.freebsd.org isn't responding:

$ cvs -z9 -d anoncvs&lt; at &gt;anoncvs1.FreeBSD.org:/home/ncvs co ports
ssh: connect to host anoncvs1.FreeBSD.org port 22: No route to host
cvs [checkout aborted]: end of file from server (consult above messages if any)

Poking around, the .fr and .tw mirrors are up and running properly.
Is this issue an already known issue?
Thanks,
-Garrett

Build failover ZFS, like HA-Storage from Solaris

<pre>hi,

we're searching for an alternative failover solution with ZFS. We have
two nodes connected to _one_ SAS Storage (so, no DRBD or anything
possible) and we want, to export zfs volumes via ISCSI to other systems.

If the primary node fails, the ZFS Pool (which also does 8 times raidz2)
has to be move to the secondary node. If that is done, the global IP
(carp?) switch to the new node.

It works with HA-Storage from Solaris 10, but the license are too
expensive on none sun-hardware :-/ for our university.

Any solutions?
