<pre>I notice that on the cygwin mailing list, emails appear like

username &lt;at&gt; blah &lt;dot&gt; com

I guess a spider could interpret that. It'd be good to hide it.

Is there any option in sourceware?

I haven't tried it but i've seen some option with a mailman mailing list to hide email address though I don't know if it does. Is there any option like it with sourceware.. are they equivalent in this respect?

I used to have an email account dedicated to mailing lists, with folders for each program whose mailing list I subscribed to, spam there if I got it wasn't a big deal, and when I didn't use it for some months, it got deactivated, which was maddening.. I know my main address won't get deactivated, as I check it often, though getting lots of notifications for those emails is irritating and yahoo instant messenger notifies me with new emails. A great feature but not when it notifies me each time a new post appears on a mailing list.

1. Download and run setup.exe, and click "Next" at each prompt, as the

2. Install additional packages with the -P option. E.G.:

setup -P gcc -P git -P bzr -P python

I'm writing via Gmail and I have enabled the "Use Unicode (UTF-8)

I don't know if this is a shortcoming of the mailing list or Gmail ...
but anyway, has anyone noticed similar behaviour? If yes, have anyone
found a solution (other than using only ASCII characters in one's

<pre>Never posted here, but somewhat off-topic for the general Cygwin list...

I've been frustrated at the lack of guidance I've found online regarding
how to build an internationalized text-based Unix application, in particular
with reference to handling different character sets. For example, "man"
recognizes the character set specified in locale settings and uses Unicode
punctuation appropriately. OTOH, the cygutils "ascii -e" utility does not
recognize that my LANG specifies UTF-8 and outputs garbage for the
extended half. Should this be considered a bug?

Closer to a real application, how should a program that reads, processes,
and outputs text detect the character set so that it can process the text
correctly? In the absence of a BOM in the input file, should the program
blindly presume the locale-specified character set or analyze the file to
guess it? And what advice is there for guessing? And, once detected, what
takes precedence for output: the input file's character set or the l</pre>

to turn on the system so that I can check out a cygwin problem.

Maybe everyone already knows about this but it was new to me. I had to
install the "wakeonlan" (or "wol") software on linux, enable "power on
from s5 by PME" in the bios, and tweak some of the obvious settings for
the network adapter (most notably the power management settings) under
the device manager.

Now, issuing a "wakeon lan xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx" turns on the system.

Pretty cool.

I thought I'd spread the word in case I'm not the only person who has
been interested in getting this working. You'll probably need a fairly
new motherboard for this. I think mine is a couple of years old.

Thanks to Larry Hall for helping me get this set up.

Executive summary: unison 2.40.16 (cygwin) freezes upon exit of a merge

Testing the MSVC build of 2.40.16 also works fine with a ssh-root.

building unison on cygwin myself.

Thanks, Harald!

However, I'm fairly committed to using cygwin in many respects (I
synchronize a substantial set of portable tools, scripts and data
between all my servers and workstation (about 10 in total)), and would
prefer keep it that way.

The debug message is the last debug output (using -debug all) before
unison "freezes". I deemed the other messages to be unimportant - I
realize I may have been mistaken.

The problem seems to be easily reproducible on several of my
workstations using the command line I posted, and doesn't seem to depend
