Last month we entertained the Plone community, see:

This month, back to the Science Club for some good'ol fashioned
Python chat and other informal ramblings:

- Around the room: "What is your favorite 'hot' Python technology and/or cool thing you or doing with Python?"
- Matt and Alex discuss the conference.
- BACON-PIG redux. A new nearby Python group had their first meeting, find out what
    they discussed!
- Your topic? What are you doing with Python and/or related technologies? Come tell us!

Hope to see you < at > the Science Club < at > 7:00PM!

Hi folks,

I've come to Python very recently from years of work (both professional and
open-source) in the PHP world. I have worked with WSGI frameworks, ORM
layers (esp. SQLAlchemy), and the Twisted framework. Python is a vastly
superior language to PHP (I think few in PHP camp would argue with that)
and the quality of these open-source projects in the Python is extremely
impressive. What I'd like to learn more about is the Python community in
the DC area. Obviously I'm a member of this mailing list, and I'm aware of
the periodic group meetings (but sadly have not yet been able to attend).
I wanted to know, though, whether there are other less formal events. One
thing that the PHP group does monthly is have an informal beverage (er,
beer) subgroup meeting; I think that has provided great opportunities to
share ideas about what folks in the field are doing. I wonder whether
there is something similar in the local Python world or, if not, whether
there is interest in creating such an "event".

Call for proposals -- PyCon 2009 -- <http://us.pycon.org/2009/>
===============================================================

Want to share your experience and expertise? PyCon 2009 is looking for
proposals to fill the formal presentation tracks. The PyCon conference
days will be March 27-29, 2009 in Chicago, Illinois, preceded by the
tutorial days (March 25-26), and followed by four days of development
sprints (March 30-April 2).

Previous PyCon conferences have had a broad range of presentations,
from reports on academic and commercial projects to tutorials and case
studies. We hope to continue that tradition this year.

Online proposal submission will open on September 29, 2008. Proposals
will be accepted through November 03, with acceptance notifications
coming out on December 15. For the detailed call for proposals,
please see:

Base Properties Question

Hi,

Is there a way, without the use of "SiteRoot" to force
sub-portals/folders of a Plone site to use it's own 'base_properties'?

For example, I want to have a root 'plonesite'. Underneath, I have a
folder called 'foo' – which will be a portal, with different colors
for the buttons and a different logo/banner. I can't use the
'SiteRoot' as I don't want the URLs to be anchored to that portal.
I'm sure there is a simple way to invoke this. We also would like to
dynamically reference values of our banner image's "alt" and "title"
properties from the base_properties. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, list, do any of you encounter this problem on Plone 3.14 or 3.15?

When you go to yoursite.com/join_form, and register a user without sign in.

It immidiately sends you to

/acl_users/credentials_cookie_auth/require_login?came_from=http%3A//www.yoursite.com/join_form

So the users can't register themselves unless you login as site manager to do it.

I wonder if there is any place in ZMI that should be configurated for annoymous registration? I am looking all over and couldn't figure out. This is different than how it used to be on Plone 2.

If you know how to fix it, let me know. Many thanks,

Hi all,

Tonight, Chris McDonough: ex-Zope Corporation Luminary unveils his BFG
(Big ****ing Gun) which:

(excerpt from http://static.repoze.org/bfgdocs/index.html)

- is a Python web application framework.
- is inspired by Zope’s publisher, though it is less ambitious in scope.
- relies heavily on Zope libraries and WSGI.

Woo Hoo! My favorite thing about repoze.bfg is:

(excerpt from from http://static.repoze.org/bfgdocs/narr/introduction.html#why)

- Familiarity: As web developers, we’ve become accustomed to working in
very particular ways (primarily using Zope 2) over the years.
This framework is a canonization of practices that “fit our brains”.

We are also celebrating approximately 1 month left until _Plone Conference 2008_ at
the Ronald Reagan Building in DC (and sprint at Arlington Career Center in VA).

See you tonight!

Transition Advice

hi everyone,

I have not yet had the opportunity to do any work with Plone 3.x.
However, I would like to upgrade a site now running 2.1 to 3.x
sometime this fall and also am about to start a new project soon -
it's a very simple site (at least to start) and may take a crack at
3.x then. My questions are:

* Are there any books or good documentation that smooth the transition
from the 2.1 or 2.5 (have done some sites with 2.5) to 3.x? Is there
the equivalent to McKay's "The Definitive Guide to Plone"? It would
be fantastic if he or someone else would update that book!

* Any advice about how to learn 3.x?

* This is for Joel - sorry I missed the bootcamp in July. Any other
such courses planned? Is there a course specifically for someone who
is not new to plone but wants to learn 3.x?

* How bad is the migration from 2.5? from 2.1?

Thanks much.

well.)
After dinner, let's pop into a few other places and check them out.

Join us if you can! If you haven't attended a Plone social thing
before, you're missing out on the best part of the community! This is
how we network, share information, hear about jobs, learn plone
history, find out about bleeding edge stuff, and ponder the mystery
that is Limi's hair.
See you there!
