Greetings List Lurkers,

Does anyone out there have any recommendations for software to operate a
Bicycle Rental and Repair store? Some of the requirements include:

1. Standard Point of Sale
2. Rental Form
3. Reservation via web

These are notional and I am currently thinking flexibility.

Maybe Sugar CRM?

Regards,

Flint

Hi Folks:

I've been impressed with the look and feel of Typo (i'd heard of it some time ago, but mistakenly believed
it was typo3-related). It sure seems like a nice web-app.

Being a programming fool, I'd been intending to delve into ruby/rails for
some time now and this seems like the impetus to get started. So i went
through the install process on my dev box (Egdy), repleat with warts and all.
First following the Typo instructions, then going over to http://www.typosphere.org/
when things didnt go as planned, then to rubyforge when gems became problematic.

(FWIW, I really like ubuntu as a (laptop) workstation, but not too much as a development env)
I'd be happy to share the process I followed to get everything up and running using apt, but
suffice it to say that Typo finally installed OK, with only minor inconvenience:
rake aborted!
no such file to load -- openssl
RION:
apt-get install libopenssl-ruby

and is running on http://localhost:4714/ OK.

The May meeting, assuming a schedule of the 3rd Wednesday of the month, falls
on Wed May 21st, in just over 2 weeks.

There was some talk about playing with open-source CAD tools ... and there's
been a bunch of discussion recently about various groupware and
project-management apps. Does anyone feel like doing a short presentation on
any specific, or (even better) a survey of good options?

Another option is to do a tour of the UVM systems and datacenter, should Mike
be willing to do it (?).

I'm (very slowly) trying to get linux running on a PS3, which I'd happily
turn into a demo for some future meeting, but I don't know if I can commit to
that for this month.

Anyone else willing to provide meeting fodder?

Hi All,

so, I've been tasked with setting up some sort of
application to allow project management for multiple
different projects (tools, scheduling, etc) and
something that would be a web app running on a linux
OS. This way we can give outside clients a look at
how their project is progressing.

After some research online, and general
dissatisfaction with what was out there I cam across
project-open.com

It seems rather good, and looks like it will fit the
bill along with providing additional CRM features,
etc. Eg, now I won't have to install sugar CRM.

so, my question to the vaguers out there:

Does anyone have any experience using project-open?

Or does anyone have any better suggestions?

As we do not have any ERP/CRM or PM software yet, I
don't care about migration, but I am looking for
something low cost (eg free) and something that will
be useful as we continue to grow.

Thanks!
Mike

I am helping a good friend of mine review his options for collaboration
between tech savvy users that are collaborating on projects over the
intarwebs. They have a few objectives:

1. Manage coverage of a physical facility/project (Ie, bill is on from 9-2,
sam is on from 1-5-- fairly simple)
2. Manage sales calendars (again, fairly simple -- nothing too complex)
3. Share files between users
4. Have a forum for discussion.

Bonus points for a solution that integrates nicely with a Wiki, CRM, etc.

They don't have a deticated server of any sort -- just a standard run of the
mill hosting package for their existing website. We sat down today and
hacked at Joomla and EGroupware, and EGroupware seems to be pretty close to
what they need (its ugly and slightly cludgey though).

We are no against integrating software packages (the Joomla hackery we did
integrated a Google calendar to meet goals 1 and 2) -- but failed horribly
at 3, and . well.. at that point we kicked it to the curb.

I recently got a call from a person who works for the local public

want to have a good electronic library system. Can you guess where this

She has been donated a machine and is running Linux. As a non-Linux

does not have a CD burner and she wants to backup the user name list.

She asked if it is possible that someone may be interested/able to help.
I said that I would be willing to have a look, but it would be uncandid
of me to not admit that while I know things in my little corner I am not

I have been visited by a magic elf from Barre and through his
generous and magnificent effort am currently running the latest
beta of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron on one partition of my laptop. I
have been urged to give my impressions.

Firstly, WOW! I'm not given to gibbering froth-mouth ravings,
but I cannot overstate the graphical candy available if your
card supports it. While poking around today, I found in System |
Preferences | Appearance | Visual Effects, a three button menu
of None, Normal (the default), and Extra. Extra is what you
want.

Wondering what that choice meant, I closed the menu and
proceeded to fuss with email and browser. NOW when I start to
drag a window elsewhere I am presented with what appears to be a
rubber window. You can grab it and shake it, and it will bend
appropriately with the velocity one applies to the touchpad (or
mouse, presumably). It is most unnerving the first time you see
it, and then you get hooked into shaking everything in sight,
which obligingly bends a

GIF/AVI/FLV formats with ffmpeg

I've generated an animated GIF of a machine part for viewing with a
browser. It works quite well but I'd like to make it interactive, which
I understand isn't possible with a GIF. I know very little of video and
tried this with ffmpeg using "ffmpeg -f gif -i Animation.gif
Animation.flv". Although Animation.flv generates, it won't play with
mplayer. The file is identified as "Macromedia Flash Player" using the
file command.

I found I can generate Animation.avi using "ffmpeg -f gif -i
Animation.gif Animation.avi". That file does play with mplayer. Using
ffmpeg -f avi -i Animation.avi Animation.flv" also produces a Flash file
which won't play. What am I missing when generating?
