<pre>On a customer's site is an industrial unit (call it "A") that has a web
interface, and although it can be reached remotely the web interface
doesn't work well due to latency issues. So there has been a request to
install another PC on-site ("B") that is always running and to which I can
remote desktop, on which to run a web browser, to view A. That means that
the comms between A and B will be on the same LAN (and therefore not suffer
from latency issues), and remote access will be via B.

However, I already have a headless (ie no keyboard/mouse/monitor, and
currently no X) server on-site ("C") that I can reach via SSH. In principle
there's no reason why I can't use this instead of installing something new
(B). So my question is: what do I need to do on C to allow me to access it
via remote desktop and run a browser?

My first thought is that
    apt-get install xrdp firefox
.. should install everything I need, but I'm not sure if that's the case.
Regardless, I would like to install as little as possible to m</pre>

<pre>My main Kubuntu 12.10 system has been a bit unstable recently, so in
order to kill or cure I decided to upgrade early to 13.04 (which
hasn't even reached first beta yet).

Imagine my horror when midway through the process of installing the
updates we had a power cut and my PC lost power. Aaaarrggghhhhh!!

Except that it was all a bit of an anti-climax - it booted fine, and
"sudo dpkg --configure -a" finished the job (it even prompted me to do
it as soon as I tried an apt-get update). So I'm now running on 13.04
and hardly any of my hair got pulled out or went grey in the process!

Now, time to do some real work :-)

[The power cut did manage to kill one Dell 24-port managed gigabit
switch, which was a surprise. I guess you can't have everything.]

<pre>Hi All

I have created a restricted folder (SFTP Jail) for a third party that needs to occasionally upload files to my server (Ubuntu Server 12.04). The folder is set-up and working correctly, but I wanted to elevate logging to keep an eye on what is transferred and when.

I added this line to sshd_config:

&lt;Subsystem   sftp    internal-sftp -f AUTH -l INFO&gt;

I was under the impression that this should create entries in auth.log, but after some test files were transferred I see nothing in the log regarding the movement of files. I don't seem to have a \var\log\messages file.

Any ideas or clues as to where I am going wrong?

Cheers

Stu

<pre>Just a gentle reminder that the PLUG mailing list only accepts email from
subscribers, and more specifically, from the address they subscribed with.

If you post to the list and it doesn't appear, it's worth checking you didn't
use a different address.

The list also doesn't accept attachments or messages over a certain size.

Messages that aren't accepted get put into a moderation queue that I process.
Usually when I do this all the messages are spam - catching spam is the
purpose of the filters - so I don't tend to do this very often, but I've just
released three messages from the moderation queue hence some relatively old
messages only just appearing here.

(There were 75 messages in the queue, 72 of which were spam. If the filters
weren't there that would mean that the PLUG list would be mostly spam.)

On the other hand it's sad to see GRUB cos it should be working and not be
stuck on boot menu.

<pre>Hi PLUGers,

Need some advice on wireless networking. A hotel we do Electrical work at
has asked to add some more wireless access points into the mix as there
current 1 point doesn't cover all areas of the hotel. The place is over
300yrs old with some walls at 36inch's thick!!

In my own home network I have my current ADSL wireless router and an older
ADSL wireless router further down the line connected with CAT5 (I know the
second ADSL bit is not needed, but hey I had a spare one.)

The above arrangement works fine with both router having the same ESSID and
WPA2 network key. Would adding some wireless access points (without ADSL)
be this simple? Am I overlooking something that won't work in this
environment?

I have also on another network seen wireless access hubs that link over
wireless rather than being hardwired back to a central switch. Is this
reliable or am I better off with CAT5 between.

Thanks
Gary

<pre>I have this motherboard, with CPU (couldn't tell you what CPU from memory):
    http://reviews.cnet.com/motherboards/abit-nf7-s2g-motherboard/4505-3049_7-30990552.html
Could likely find some RAM to go with it. Socket A so not high spec,
but might be a good replacement for a failed board.

I also have at least one Fujitsu Siemens Econel server with dead
motherboard (PSU and CPU fine, I believe). Good solid metal cases with
loads of drive bays etc, but not worth repairing. Should take standard
motherboards if you can find one that the CPU fits relative to where
the PSU is.

Free for collection from Peterborough.

<pre>Morning,

This months PLUG meeting (on Tuesday, Jan 8th) will be held in the

never posted to the mailing list before. Our meetings have an informal
style, and you will generally get the best experience if you bring at
least one computer. Connectivity is available.

The car park entrance is visible here:
