The Gnome System Monitor, as installed by Ubuntu 8.04.1, has a
load-graphing feature. If you leave the display on the load graph, you
actually increase your CPU load. For some reason, this is particularly
CPU-heavy. However, clicking on the "Processes" tab will continue to
gather the data for graphing in the background, so your history is
preserved when you click back on the "Resources" tab.

To verify this for yourself, leave it on "Processes" for a minute, then
click back to "Resources" and you'll see the change.

Anyway, not a big deal on modern hardware, but it could be the
difference between something running smoothly and choppily on older
machines, or on stressed modern machines.

Howdy,

As you may recall, we'll be hosting the Central PA Open Source
Conference (CPOSC) on October 19th.

We're opening up registration early to CPLUG members and friends -- you
can buy your tickets here:

 http://cposc.eventbrite.com/

There's 3 tracks and 18 speakers, with breakfast and lunch provided,
along with a nifty t-shirt!

The cost is just $30.

You can see more details about the conference here:

 http://www.cposc.org/

We're opening up registration to CPLUG members early to make sure any of
you who want to go can -- it's at a smaller venue than our previous
conference, so there's less seats.

Registration will open up to the public early next week, so if you're
interested in going, be sure to get your tickets soon!

Feel free to send this out to whomever you'd like.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks!
 -Eric

What options are there to limit the usage on that particular machine?
Something I can configure in the firewall/router? Something else?

The other option being that I can pull the plug, but that's gonna trigger the
kind of confrontation that I'd rather avoid if at all possible...

Help?

Does anyone have any insight into how to reduce battery usage in a
device suspended with apm? I'm suspending a PDA with "apm --suspend"
and it doesn't even last 48 hours on a full battery. A possible
complication is that I often set a wakeup time, so something needs to
keep checking the current time vs. the alarm time to know if it's
supposed to wake the PDA.

Any ideas?

printing from OpenOffice

After fighting a bit with CUPS, I finally got that working, and managed to
do a test page and a PDF file. OpenOffice seems to be stuck pointing to some
generic printer, where from what I can glean out of their docs I'm supposed
to put some command line in there someplace to fix that? Seems I need to run
the spadmin program in the openoffice directory...

I also tried to use the "export to PDF" option figuring that I could fire up
kpdf and print from that. It did generate the file from the document, it
does display okay, and when I try to print it I see some activity on the
status lights on the printer, but nothing else happens.

Help?

I don't do a whole lot with office-type apps, but do get the occasional *.doc
file sent my way and the ability to print it would be nice.

The printer in question is an LJ5MP, which sure does a nice job when the
software side of things is working.

Mutt - Saving messages to a directory

I can't find how to set the directory (NOT the file) where I want to save
mail messages. It should look like:

Save message to ~/mail/

and allow me to type in a file name (and create the file if it doesn't
exist) (If I know it's saving to that directory, I don't need the
message.)

I found how to set a file for saved messages; but that doesn't do me any
good.

Mutt hooks

Trying mutt hooks.

my_hdr reply-to: "fleet-aFh3xXUzLmNg9hUCZPvPmw< at >public.gmane.org" works as expected.

folder-hook paxp set from="fleet-ny6wn4nW9lA< at >public.gmane.org"
folder-hook paxp set my_hdr="fleet-ny6wn4nW9lA< at >public.gmane.org"

This changes the from when composing from the paxp folder; but not the reply_to
field. Mutt complains about an unknown variable.

I also tried setting multiple hooks as:

folder-hook . set from="fleet-aFh3xXUzLmNg9hUCZPvPmw< at >public.gmane.org"
folder-hook paxp set from="fleet-ny6wn4nW9lA< at >public.gmane.org"
folder-hook mary set from="mary-aFh3xXUzLmNg9hUCZPvPmw< at >public.gmane.org"
folder-hook epix set from="fleet-kj3SAyJu6V4< at >public.gmane.org"

This appears to work; but I still want the reply-to field to change for each also.
