[clug] Off topic: recommendations for a reliable wireless router?

<pre>Hi all,

I need to get a new wireless router as my current Netgear device is
starting to play up (connections are dropped &amp; wireless performance is
terrible - negating having FTTH!).

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has similar requirements &amp; can
recommend something already in use. Roughly speaking, I'm looking for:
- something midrange for home use (mostly email, web browsing,
potentially a media server for the idiot box)
- support for 802.11n and IPV6
- USB ports (can get by with 1, 2 is probably more useful though)
- reliable! I'd rather not go shopping again 6-12 months down the track :-)

I'm probably goig to steer clear of Netgear - a number of reviews
listed recurring problems with dropouts/connection problems/devices
dying.

Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks,

Ben

<pre>Canberra Linux Users Group Meeting - 23rd May 2013
==================================================

Date:23rd May 2013 (Fourth Thursday of the month)

Time:19:00 - 21:00 (or when it finishes)

Speaker:Paul Wayper

Abstract:
It's Raspberry Pi Day!

Well, Pi Day only really works in the USA, so let's
ignore that and do something with the new craze in small
form factor computing: the Raspberry Pi. I'd like
everyone with a Raspberry Pi to bring it in and give us
a brief talk about how they use it. We'd all appreciate
a bit of detail about any challenges you've found in
using it and what you think has made it great for you.

I'll also open that up to other small form factor boards
- Panda boards, Beagle boards and anything else.If it's
running off a less than a dozen watts, bring it along!

Venue:Room N101
Computer Science and Information Technology Building
North Road
The Australian National University

<pre>Hey all,

Just a heads-up that Harvey Norman are selling a 7" Android tablet for $68
this weekend -
http://www.harveynorman.com.au/amicroe-touchtab-ii-tablet.html Specs
'highlights' are: 1.2GHz, 512MB RAM, 4GB flash, wifi, 0.3MP front-facing
camera. More complete specs at http://www.amicroe.com.au/pd_tablet_7.aspx

For the ridiculous price, it seems that it's a perfectly acceptable device
(see this thread at Whirlpool -
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2035287). Would make a decent ebook
reader, but I'll be getting one as a dev device (I've just started playing
with Android app dev) and maybe play around with hacking a lightweight
distro onto it...

<pre>This is not strictly Linux related, but I thought this might be a good
technical forum to initially raise the issue.

I recently had to call up my ISP[1] about a problem with my service. In
the course of that conversation they wanted to verify my identity.

So they asked "Can you tell me your password?"

Turns out their passwords are all stored in plain text so they can use them
to verify identity. I've suggested this is a bit of a security weakness
and I was told it wasn't.

I've since had a similar situation where a mobile telco did a similar thing
but in their case, they could only see the first characters of the password.

I can accept an organisation's need to verify my identity, but do people
think this is an appropriate way to implement it?

[1] I've chosen not to name the ISP involved, suffice to say it's a local
Canberra ISP.

Why I think this is of importance (not for the technical info):
- the source, Mark Colvin retweeted this link (from mark pesce)

- that Main Stream Media is talking about a *linux* device built for
hacking.

We may have skipped "The Year of the Linux Desktop", but we've had the
decade of the Linux Server, the half-decade of Linux smartphone/tablet
and now "the linux DIY hack thingy".

This line in the BBC article struck me as "the Why":

myself off of the excellent OpenVZ container system and migrating over
to Linux Containers (LXC) (Wheezy no longer provides OpenVZ kernels,
as LXC has reached an optimum maturity level).

However, LXC is still not as "mature" as OpenVZ and there are various
reports (mostly out-of-date) that LXC containers may be easier to break
out of.

So, my question is, does anyone know of any "pentest" scripts etc. that
I can use to test the known "jailbreak" vulnerabilities in LXC (or any
container mechanism, for that matter)? I want it for verification that
my host configuration is set up correctly.

I have tried searching around on the "web", but others search-foo might

Hi all,

I'm getting a 500 Server Error on the LUG-in-a-box system which sends out
the meeting announcements, so I'll give this one in person:

I thought I'd do a brief introduction to Test Anything Protocol (TAP, at
http://testanything.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page). I've been using it at
work and I thought it'd be good to talk about how to write TAP output and
the finer points of testing.

Then we can all go out to dinner and talk about what we've been doing, which
is the fun part of the night.

Have fun,

Paul

Hi all,

I'm going away in June, and I'd love a person to volunteer to run the
meetings for the PSIG and the CLUG monthly meeting.

And I feel that I've been doing a crap job at running the CLUG meetings in
the last year or so. I've had lots of trouble finding people to give talks,
I haven't even started on the website redesign I wanted to do, I've (some
might say inevitably) got behind in processing the videos of the meetings,
and I haven't done any of the social media engagement that I think is
important to build a healthy Linux User Group. Maybe it's time for me to
retire and hand the baton to someone who can give it more time and love.

If someone wants to step up and do the job permanently, they're welcome to
it. I'll help where I can, I'll pass on the information I have, and I'll
continue to come to meetings and help out there. And if no-one wants to
step up to the plate, then I'll continue doing what I can and trying to improve.

But I do need someone</pre>

[clug] [JOB]Red Hat Consultant

<pre>I'm posting this on behalf of someone else, if you're interested in further
details please contact Lynette directly.

I do some contracting work through Finite, but have no further commercial
interest, just thought there might be someone on the list who would be
interested.

Lynette is subscribed to this list, but doesn't seem able to post to it and
I don't have time to figure out why today...

Cheers,
Neill

Seeking RedHat design people!

I have a client seeking a Linux RedHat consultant to perform design and
installation/configuration work. This would be a 6-8 week role, so could
be a good chance to fill in time until the end of financial year.

If you are interested – or know someone who might be – please contact me
asap:
