When a system uses pam, the file (typically) /etc/security/limits.conf
can control limits for things like resident set size, stack size, number
processes, login count, etc.

What happens when a user hits a soft limit? A hard limit means the
operation is not completed and/or fails.

I'm looking for a way to notify users that they are pushing their luck
opening another (eg - firefox) application as they are running out of
ram.

I decided to do a little research today to see how I can use RSS in our
system.
Most of the items I want the client to see are time sensitive and I need
the client to read the XML file on the server at least once per 5
minutes. I've
added the <ttl> option the feed and it does not seem FireFox 3.0
respects it.
I'm tailing apaches access log and I see no attempt to grab the file every
5 minutes. Possibly I've did something wrong?

Here is the top of the rss feed file

Considerations Regarding Dual Power Supplies

In audio-land, you have to be mindful of not creating ground loops, i.e, a closed circuit of what should be ground in which EMI (especially 60Hz hum and harmonics) can be induced.

Knowing that, does it cause problems to run power cables from a machine with two power supplies to two different PDUs in a server rack? Or, is it preferable to connect the two power cables to as close to the same point as possible (i.e., two electrically adjacent outlets in the same PDU)? Aren't the ground pins in each of the two power supplies going to be connected together inside the machine? If so, it seems as though having the two grounds form a big loop might bring a lot of hash into the machine through the ground lines.

Question about cable modem connections

I'm about to set out on a project that's bound to be hazardous to my
marriage and maybe my health. I'm sending my wife to her mother's house
(who is 91) with a laptop running Xubuntu. When she gets there, she'll
order internet service from the local cable provider. While I have no
hope that the installer will even know what Linux is, I'm hoping it will
be plug and play.

My question is, do cable modems work like DSL modems in that they have a
DHCP server built in so all you have to do is plug a computer that works
with a DHCP enabled router? Or do you have to do some manual configuration?

The reason I asked is that the little lady is a modern day Luddite wrt
computers. After about 5 years I think she's finally able to plug her
SD card from the camera into the reader and when the window pops up with
her pictures, she knows to open another window and find the right
directory to drag and drop the pictures into. I don't think she's
mastered creating a new directory without help yet however.

I guess now it's any time.

In the mean time, you can find <http://ALE.org> at
<http://mail.ALE.org>

We have a note out to switch the domain and a request
to transfer the domain ownership. Will keep the list
apprised.

Hey Mark.

 ALE aka Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts
want to know if they can brow-beat
you into a demonstration at an ALE meeting?

They are a rabid bunch of Linux zealots
that will probably throw rotten tomatoes
at you, ask very hard questions about the
gear and pick on you a lot..

But also includes a handful of people
with a serious interest in high end wireless
networking that may just drool at your
 kewl toys.

Meetings are usually at Emory U.
 See http://www.ale.org for details.
