maybe it's a known issue, but accessing MRTG trac i'm getting a 403

MRTG not running by default after reboot

Just did a new install of mrtg, been a while since I'd done one so jumped through some hoops to get the index pages just the way I wanted them, but now when rebooting the server (Debian Linux 6), mrtg doesn't run on its own, I have to execute:

env LANG=C /usr/bin/mrtg /etc/mrtg.cfg

from the terminal to get it to start graphing again. I checked in /etc/cron.d, the mrtg file is there with the following entry:

0-55/5 * * * * root if [ -x /usr/bin/mrtg ] && [ -r /etc/mrtg.cfg ]; then env LANG=C /usr/bin/mrtg /etc/mrtg.cfg >> /var/log/mrtg/mrtg.log 2>&1; fi

The log file listed in the cron job hasn't been updated in 2 days either, even after manually starting mrtg. Any help in getting it to run automatically would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Joel

Strange MRTG problem

Hello,

It's been a long time since I used MRTG (I've been writing directly to rrds
for a long time now) but an old employer of mine asked me to troubleshoot a
legacy MRTG setup and I'm having a strange problem with it I cannot
decipher.

I am graphing a port in two ways. One is in Cacti, one is with MRTG. Both
are using 64bit counters (I have even setup the MRTG configuration to
specifically use the HC OIDs rather than assuming they are being queried by
specifying :::::2)

In Cacti, I get the correct value (approximately 700-800Mbps per second.)
In MRTG, it is never more than 190-200Mbps.

My MRTG configuration looks like this:

Two devices, one graph?

Have what could be a simple question. When monitoring an SNMP device w/MRTG,
is it possible to plot the data from two devices on a single graph?

I have two temperature probes. I would like probe #1 (indoor temp) displayed
as the I value and probe #2 (outdoor temperature) as the O value.

Currently I am monitoring the indoor temp with the noo option enabled.

Target[ncr-temp]:
1.3.6.1.4.1.3854.1.2.2.1.16.1.3.0&1.3.6.1.4.1.3854.1.2.2.1.16.1.8.0:public< at >1
0.44.1.60

I also have a second temp probe (also noo option) on a different IP address
measuring outdoor temperature.

Target[outdoor-temp]:
1.3.6.1.4.1.3854.1.2.2.1.16.1.3.0&1.3.6.1.4.1.3854.1.2.2.1.16.1.8.0:public< at >1
0.1.1.60

Would love to modify the syntax of the Target line in the cfg file to
support polling the I & O values from different devices.

Something like below, but this doesn't seem to work.

1.3.6.1.4.1.3854.1.2.2.1.16.1.3.0:public< at >10.44.1.60&1.3.6.1.4.1.3854.1.2.2.1

I have a few graphs in which the out channel is much less than the in
channel. As an example I take a graph with statistics of our virus scanner
for the E-mail. The in channel shows the rate of all mail, the in channel
shows the rate mail with detected malware. The full rate varies between 5
and 100 mails per hour, but mail with malware is seen only a few times per
week. (The count is so low, because there is a front-end system that already
filters out most of the malware.)
So, the daily graph usually shows no malware or one or two spikes for the
malware.
The weekly graph shows a little bit of "grass" for the malware.
The monthly graph shows some more "grass".
The problem is the yearly graph. It shows some "grass" only for about the
last 60 days. The grass disappears after about 60 days.
I took a snapshot of the graphs on January 1st. The yearly graph created on
January 1st shows the "grass" for the months December and November. The
yearly graph created yesterday, shows the "grass" for the months

I am recording error counts from the stats of an ADSL modem and during a power
surge the count seems to have gone through the roof. As a result, in any
graph other than this week's I cannot see anything but than a massive spike.
All historical data counts are too small in comparison to be visible.

When I was using rateup logs I could always have a quick look in the data and
edit the offending readings to smaller values. With rrd the entries are in
hex and I can't really trust myself to edit any of it.

Is there a simple solution to this problem?

We have a Palo Alto 200 firewall device in our WAN routing setup. Along
with the firewall features it provides, the device is also used to
establish two ipsec-based VPN tunnels (using two different WAN links) to

it's IP address. I also know that the interface names for the two tunnels
are tunnel.1 and tunnel.4 and the IP addresses used for the tunnel
interfaces are 10.<a.b>.2 and 10.<c.d>.2 respectively. When I try to create
a cfg file using the

the cfg file I get doesn't list out any of the tunnel interfaces.

I also tried using a few other "--ifref=" options mentioned in the cfgmaker
man-page but neither of those options seems to work. I would b

Cisco Switch interface names break windows version of MRTG

I search high and low for a solution to mt windows installation of MRTG.
(2.17.4)

Ok.. Here goes... Theres a million ciso switches in the world so someone
else has to have the same problem as I do.

I setup everything and its working fine until I try to run the cfgmaker
with the --ifref=descr --ifdesc=descr options. The Cisco switch interface
names are GigabitInterface1/0/1 etc... and this is an invalid file name in
windows. Soooooo how to tou get around this. Can I some how map the
slashes '/' to underscores '_' so that windows will create the output HTML
files when I execute the perl mrtg mrtg.cfg command??

I tried to set a description on the port within Cisco and MRTG doesnt read
that field. It still uses the interface name. I'm using a template to
create my .cfg file so maybe thats messed up.

If you are using MRTG and your interface names are similar to this
"gigabitinterface1/0/1" and you are able to get the --ifref=descr or
--ifref=name options to create HTML files with the interface descript

I don't see any RRD files around. Is the data in the .log files in my

Fixing the 32 bit wrap-around on a switch

Hey folks,

I have the 32 bit wrap-around issue and I found the fix to add ':::::2' at
the end of the Target for each port on the switch. That's in the cfg
file. I added that manually and it worked, but now I'm trying to figure
out how to get cfgmaker to use that target instead of the 32 bit one.
I'm not really sure how to go about that. Am looking at the man page and
it has this option :

--if-template=templatefile

But says it is experimental and under development and may change. And I'm
also not sure exactly what that template file should look like. I found
some templates down here e.g. this one

/usr/share/doc/mrtg-2.14.5/contrib/cfgmaker_cisco/cfgmaker.cisco

And in there I find the line the generates the Target, but I'm still not
clear on how to make my own template for this.

This is the release for RHEL5 so pretty old - maybe I should just look at
something newer and it will already have this problem solved for me?

thanks,
-Alan
