<pre>The internet on my desktop suddenly stopped working while watching a video.
I don't think anything has changed recently as far as configuration goes.
It seems like the eth0 interface is getting an IP address from my router,
but I can only ping myself. dns names don't resolve like if I ping
yahoo.com. If I ping the router at 192.168.0.1, I seem to only get one
response back before it hangs and times out. I've been trying to debug
this myself, but I'm unfamiliar with what files are used for what now.

Is there something I can do to fix networking? Other computers attached to
the router don't seem to be having any issues.

<pre>Using Ubuntu13.04 on my Dell laptop and screen brightness controls not working.
Tried the solution by following below steps :

1. Open a terminal (Program - Accessories - Terminal)
2. Type in "sudo gedit /etc/default/grub" (without the "")
3. Find the line that says: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="quiet splash"
4. Edit it so it says: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor"
5. Save and exit
6. Run the command "sudo update-grub" (again without quotes of course)

Brightness controls worked But the system started hanging.
So i reverted back to the previous settings and hanging problem solved
but brightness control problem still exists.
Any other Solution?

<pre>Greetings;

It appears the cups mailing list has been deleted, easyws.com is now
cups.com, and the apple exclusivity is now complete. Are we going to have
to reinvent a new, open source cups?

That leaves me with no place (mailing list I was subscribed to when it was
active) to ask how do I change the binding ditch option, when using the
long edge binding option, its on the wrong edge of the paper when running
in duplex mode, which a Brother HL3179CDW color laser printer can do. The
hole punch, or binding edge is on the right of odd pages and left on even
pages, the opposite of what it should be.

When using the cups editor at localhost:631, I note that while it does
display the choice of long-edge or short-edge binding, it does not show the
output order, which in the .PPD file, defaults to reverse, which has to do
with whether the image is on top, or the bottom as it arrives on the output
tray. But without the proper editor, I am hesitant to change that in the
.PPD with gedit.

problem with Lohit Hindi font on Ubuntu 13.04 platform

<pre>Hi,
I have ubuntu 13.04 installed and I use Lohit Hindi to type in Hindi
language. I have noticed an irritating problem while correcting errors in
saved openoffice .odt files. To illustrate, suppose I have a word में in a
file. Once I save it, if I reopen the file, and I want to change the word to
मा, this is what happens - I delete the accents and go to म and then as I
put the new accent, I get the letter म and the accent ा separately (oा).
This happens only in openoffice. For instance, if I copy the same thing
here, this problem does not appear, and I see मा. Of course, if I delete the
entire word and retype the whole thing, then the correct form appears.
If I save the file with this aberration and reopen it, it does not go away.
I think this problem started with ubuntu 12.10. I did not have this problem
with earlier versions of ubuntu.

Any suggestions?

far but handling his rather big music collection is really an important
part of his computer usage, and I'm clearly at a loss on how to best deal
with it.

I personally like to use the bare filesystem and simple tools as much as
possible, at least as opposed to programs that tie you in or are buggy.
But, at his scale and considering the issues I'm clearly not convinced
anymore that this is a good approach.

1. he's not an advanced computer user. Things like having to be careful not
to remove the file suffix, or, where does the album title go as opposed to
the song title, or, why would it need numbers in the file names to preserve
the track ordering, or, why have the info also in meta tags, are
understandably confusing for him. There are too many places to check/keep
in mind.
2. even as a power user, once you start tagging files, it becomes an issue

Under Xubuntu, it mirrors the main display, and I cannot see anything

My desktop is similar, but it's got an Nvidia controller, so I can't

The laptop is a recent Gateway. I don't know the video hardware or

I could use some help, obviously.

Setting up a HP printer on a wireless network

<pre>Thank you for reading this.

I went ahead and bought the HP laser pro 100 printer; it arrived this
afternoon.

I have set the printer up using hp-setup as a USB printer and an
Ethernet printer but I cannot get the printer working on my wireless
network.

The instructions for Windows are:

Press the WPS button on the router.
Then press the wireless button on the printer and wait 2 minutes.
After two minutes I'm informed that the connection has failed.

I get much the same result using hp-wificonfig, except for a dialog that
reads "Unable to locate wireless hardware on device." A blue LED on the
printer blinks to show that the wireless device is turned on and a menu
item confirms that as well.

I also tried the same under Windows, just in case, and the connection
still fails.

Can anyone shed some light on the method that I should use to get the
printer working on a wireless network?

I have a Canon LiDE 20 that works perfectly for years (with previous

I remembered I had to edit the /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules file
once to enable the LiDE 20, which is on the list, but the 3000F isn't.

What do I have to do to make it work?

I tried Google, but all I got were links to the manufacturer site to
download Windows drivers.

<pre>Long time ago (like 16-17 years) when I started doing a simple website
for our company I was hit by the line ending difference in certain
files used on the website.
For example if I transferred the PERL script files to the website

ASCII they came over exactly like in Windows.
And the website functions utilizing the script files broke down....

Now I am transferring all scripted functionality to PHP from PERL and
adding some...

On suggestion by my son-in-law I used FileZilla in secure FTP mode and
transferred the files. After a while I noticed that the file size on
Windows was exactly the same as on linux, so it got me wondering about
the transfers and weather there would be problems down the road.
Seems like the scripts work also with the CRLF line endings, but I
want to make sure.

So here is my simple question:
Has Apache/PHP/MySql been adapted to accept all line ending systems
around without breaking like in the old days?
If that is so</pre>

Laser printer use question

<pre>Thank you for reading this.

I have been continually plagued with dried ink jet cartridges over the
years and so I though a laser printer would be my best option.

I'm considering a HP MFP M175NW multifunction printer which seems to
fill the bill. However, the specs read that the monthly number of pages
is 250 - 950. This seems to imply that the minimum number of pages is
250. I'm likely to print no more than 5 which has caused me to waste
several expensive ink jet cartridges.

Have I misunderstood the specs and will I run into problems if I only
print a few, or no, pages per month?

Ubuntu 13.04 touchscreen problems

<pre>hello,
I have a problem with Ubuntu 13.04 desktop (fresh install) and
touchscreens.
After 1 or 2 clicks the system stop to recognize clicks.

I tried three differents touch-screens on two different computers with two
different video cards (Intel, Nvidia).

Someone experienced the same problem?

<pre>Hi !

My friend always has some or the other problem when using Ubuntu.
Earlier he used to complain 'slow Internet connectivity -- only in
Ubuntu, not in Windows'. Now he changed to another ISP and new complaint
is 'no Internet connectivity -- only in Ubuntu, not in Windows'.

He used 'Linux Mint Live CD' too but in vain. My laptop never had a
problem with his ISP. His system is a Sony Vaio VPCEH25EN. Sony being
such a big company... I can't understand the reason
