PA-jackd bridging

Some things I have found out about PA-jackd bridging.

- If PA is running and then Jackd is started, PA must be reconfigured to
continue working. Anything currently using PA for its output will stop
until this is done. I assume inputs is the same thing, but really, if you
are recording why would you make such changes in the middle of a
recording?

- Jackd's latency setting affects PA's CPU usage as PA works to keep up
with jackd. However, this doesn't seem to be a problem on most modern
(and some less modern) systems.

- PA also has an effect on jackd. This is very noticeable if there are
two (or more) audio interfaces. If one IF has a higher limit for latency,
that limit will be forced on the other card even though it can normally
run at a lower latency. If that IF has stability issues those will also
show up on the second card even though it normally would be fine.

I would not consider any of these things bugs.

I do think there needs to be some thought about how US is shipped though.

blueprints for quantal cycle

hello everyone,

it is time to develop the blueprints[0] for what we plan to accomplish with
ubuntu studio for the quantal cycle. therefore, i would like solicit
suggestions for what we might do. these suggestions can be categorical
(i.e. we need to improve "out-of-the-box" experience"), specific work
items(i.e. we need to fix the distro image presented during the partman
installation), or both. i will also present a list of topics and related
work items.

also, a blueprint can be somewhat open ended. for example, in the case of
"improving the out-of-the-box experience" we might only research the
various means we might accomplish this task and make a decision which
method to be used this cycle. the actual implementation might be delayed
until next cycle. this is just an example, but i would like us to be
reasonable about what we can accomplish.

the general process is that we will need to develop categorical topics with
associated work items required. these will be written up as blueprints,
which will the

As in Windows, anyone can now log onto this linux box with their Windows

grant anyone in this specific domain group (MYDOMAIN\audio) permissions to
do what the local audio group can do?

Improving OOTB performance

Hello everybody,

I've conducted quite a lot of performance research recently, mostly
concerning desktop use case, but I've got some things to share about
realtime use cases too.

Ulatencyd would probably be handy for you; it's a supervisor daemon which
prioritizes processes for resource allocation, gives some processes
realtime privileges if needed and arranges processes in cgroups. It can
decrease latency by smarter resource allocation and getting low-priority
tasks out of the way of media apps. It's being tested in elementary OS
daily builds and the results we've got so far are impressive. I'm currently
working with its author on expanding default configs to accommodate more
use cases.

Another useful thing would be avoiding swapping for as long as possible. In
Linux there are several facilities competing for RAM - in Ubuntu's stock
configuration executable code often gets swapped to disk to make way for
various caches. Here's the best article I've found about it so far:

About time to start work on 12.10... ideas first

1) we don't seem to have a midi filter router. I was talking to a user who
needs one and I didn't know what to suggest. After looking around I found
qmidiroute which works quite well. There is zonage as well, but it is
alpha and so not likely to be in our repos soon enough. Anything else I
could find was CLI (see midish). I was able to use qmidiroute to split my
dx7 to two zones with two patches and cap the velocity on one of the
ranges. I could find other uses too... such as changing the sound of one
pad on my ancient yamaha DD11 pad set. (yes there are other ways too)

2) there has been some talk of a "record mode". I think the name could
changed to "performance mode" as it may be more useful for live use or
even video work.

Even though ubuntu is moving from unix init to upstart, the idea of
runlevels has been preserved. While no other ubuntu products (that I am
aware of) use anything more than rl 012S6, there are still 3-5 which are
the same as 2 as they

Hello everyone,

There are a few interesting developments that should be shared.

Firstly, there are discussions about moving the -lowlatency kernel
maintenance into the kernel team as it was pointed out that the patch is
"something like a two line" patch. I don't actually know how long our
patch is. And it seems disproportionate to have to rebuild a new kernel
each time of a security update for such a patch. It was suggested that
this might become a build option for an existing kernel package maintained
by UKT.

Initial discussion with UKT have been fairly positive. They were reducing
the number of kernel they maintained and it seems that this was contrary to
their efforts, but it was also realized that the actual maintenance of this
kernel would be minimal. Queries also were presented about UKT's official
maintenance and responsibility of the -lowlatency kernel. I'm not sure
this was answered directly but it appears that because the kernel would be
built by UKT, it doesn't mean that Canonical or UKT

As already reported, it also doesn't happen with the kernels

IIUC it's definitive related to the kernel, I anyway will test the vesa

I modified the xorg.conf I use with the nvida driver, startup ends with
tty, no X. Does anybody notice what I might have missed?
