Hi,

The Kiwi PyCon 2013 Organising Committee would like to announce the availability of the Kiwi PyCon 2013 Financial Aid program. The program's purpose is to make the conference accessible to everyone, particularly those who due to financial difficulties would otherwise not be able to attend. We are particularly interested in potential speakers as it would be a shame for the conference to miss out on your talk contribution merely due to financial concerns.

Further information regarding the program can be found here: http://nz.pycon.org/financial-aid/

And don't forget the Call for Proposals ends next Tuesday, June 18 so please get those talk/tutorial submissions in!

Seeking feedback - EFA Citizens Not Suspects campaign

Hi everyone,

From time to time, Linux Australia is approached by various
organisations to seek support for campaigns or initiatives. Many of
these fall into the category of grants and sponsorship - cf. the recent
work we have been doing with the Australian Internet Governance Forum
and GovHack. In this case, we've been approached to support a political
campaign being run by Electronic Frontiers Australia called 'Citizens
not suspects'. We warmly welcome the approach from EFA, and now would
like to gauge community feedback to help guide our support actions.

The essence of the Citizens not suspects campaign is to oppose, and
bring to bear political pressure, to reject a number of proposals
currently before parliament, including;

  * a proposal for *mandatory retention of data* relating to the
internet and telecommunications activity of all Australians for up
to two years. This data could include records of your phone calls,

After some discussion about possible changes to meeting time/day for the
IRC channel, we arrived at the conclusion that a wiki would be a good idea
as a communication medium, especially as a way to collect hints and tips on
establishing and running a LUG.

Mr. croy has put his hand up to establish same, and in due course he will
let eveyone know (via these email lists) that it is available for your
contributions!

If anyone wants the log of the meeting, drop me a line.

Hi there,

Plans are coming along really well for linux.conf.au 2014 in Perth.
We're very much looking forward to seeing you all there, but in the
meantime it's time to start thinking about 2015.

We have had a lot of expressions of interest already for bids so we
aren't going to do a formal call for EOI's but are instead doing our
official call for linux.conf.au 2015 bids! Don't worry though, if you
didn't express your interest we'd still love to talk to you about how to
put together your bid and have given you plenty of time to put one together.

The timeline for this year is as follows:

* Jan/Feb - The Council seeks expressions of interest in running an LCA.
* 25th May - The Council formally requests bids for LCA.
* June - The Council works with teams to help them prepare their bids,
answering any questions.
* 8th July - Submission of formal bids closes.
* July-August - The Council clarifies any questions regarding the bids
and reviews them
* September - The Council visits potential teams.

Grant / sponsorship for discussion - partnership with auDA for Australian Internet Governance Forum

Hi Linux Australia Community,

As you may have seen from a previous email to this list, Linux Australia
is keen to work with auDA to provide support for the upcoming Australian
Internet Governance Forum. In particular, we're thinking of providing
assistance for delegates from under-represented cohorts to attend the
forum in Melbourne in October. We're now seeking feedback from the Linux
Australia community on this move, and specifically would like to hear
your views on;

- whether this is something you feel Linux Australia should be strongly
supporting
- if so, are we supporting this initiative in the right way?
- if so, which under-represented cohorts should be targeted and what are
some of the selection criteria that should be used to identify delegates
to support?
- any other feedback you may wish to provide

The feedback will then influence the Council's decision around funding
the initiative.

More information on the Australian Internet Governance Forum can be found at

This time, with content.

Hi everyone,

With thanks to Brianna Laugher for making us aware of this initiative,
we wanted to promote the opportunity to become an Australian Internet
Governance Forum Ambassador to the Linux and Open Source Community in
Australia.

The Australian Internet Governance Forum, curated by auDA, has been run
for the last few years as an open, collaborative workshop promoting and
facilitating discussion on the key topics driving the future of the
internet.

The 2013 event will be held in Melbourne on 16th-17th October.

This year's topics include gTLDs, rights of children online, legal
rights and cybercrime and several others.

Linux Australia is proud to be working in partnership with auDA and
intends to provide financial support (subject to Council approval) to
the event, with the specific aim of assisting diversity of
representation at the forum.

The Forum is specifically looking for Ambassadors to lead discussions on
areas of internet governance in which they are pass

Linux Australia is a community and volunteer-run organisation. We

addition to the dedicated volunteers who help run events there are many

To maintain the robust presence and variety of activities in which Linux

=== How does volunteering with Linux Australia help you? ===

There are a number of benefits associated with being involved with Linux
Australia.

You get to apply your skills to a new field, and grow your existing
skill base. This can be of benefit if you're looking to build experience
to put on your resume, or if you're getting a little bored at work. The
Council and volunteers running Subcommittees often endorse volunteers
through mechanisms such as LinkedIn, or provide referrals - so
volunteering with Linux Australia can be a career building mo

The Australasian Open Source Developers Conference is one of the top
conferences for developers in Asia Pacific. It's primarily focused on
development with open source tools and development of open source
software, and is now in its 10th year.

For the first time, the conference is crossing the ocean and is landing
in Auckland, New Zealand, 21st - 23rd October 2013, at the lavish
Langham Hotel. This makes it truly an international event to that is a
must attend.

Covering everything from revision control to the latest software
development methodologies and tools, OSDC cannot afford to be missed by
anyone who uses open source development tools, or writes open source
software.

Our focus this year is security, identity and privacy.

We need YOU as a presenter! Your pet project, what you're currently

Changes to the Telecommunications (Types of CablingWork) Declarations

I was wondering if the linux-aus community had any sort of opinion on
the proposals to the AMCA around changes to the Telecommunications
(Types of Cabling Work) Declarations [1]?

To summarise, and please correct me if I'm wrong; to do any sort of
domestic permanent cabling work (through walls, etc) that will connect
to an external network -- even through a ADSL, cable or NBN modem --
requires a AMCA "restricted" license [2]; something quite non-trivial
to get. It basically means you can not DIY an internet-connected
wired-network within your house without the services of a licensed
contractor.

Now that every blu-ray, TV, media streamer and HDMI cable has
ethernet, plugging these in and connecting them to the internet falls
under the regulations. This means hi-fi installers now technically
need to be registered cablers. The proposal at [1] discusses this
issue and suggests that media equipment be made exempt.

Again, as I understand it, it's perfectly legal to run as much speaker
wire, twisted pair coppe

Hi everyone

The OSIA survey submission deadline has been extended until Friday 10 May.

Why? ... nobody will be able to analyse the results before Friday
anyway, so it may as well be extended until Friday!

Go to: http://osia.com.au/surveys/index.php/288243?lang=en

We have had good response so far, and a few later ones well be most welcome.

Cheers
Daniel.
