Spielfrieks Etiquette

The Spielfrieks list is one of the largest forums for the discussion of German-style (aka designer) games. Here are a few tips and some general guidelines designed to keep Spielfrieks an enjoyable and useful forum.

1. Try to keep the subject line in tune with the content of your message. If you reply to one email but the subject starts to drift, please change the subject line to reflect the new topic. This makes it much easier for those reading to filter on the subjects that interest them most.

2. Cut down on unnecessary quoted text (text from the person you are replying to). This is especially true of the boiler-plate Spielfrieks material that is appended to every posted message. It's hard to read these messages with lots of extra quoted text - especially in digest mode. The number of messages is so great that not everyone can keep up - so please be judicious in cutting out text in replies.

3. Please use www.tinyurl.com or another URL-shortening service when posting long links. Ma

So is this Kickstarter the new future of game design or just a fad which will fade within a year or two ? From my undertanding Kickstarter is sold as a way for independant game designers to bypass all that messy submission stuff to game designers and appeal directly to the game buyers. If you like the game put some money in and if enough think likewise the game is produced. After having some talks on the subject with people at the Gathering including players and game company representatives I am not sure whether Kickstarter has long term feasibility. Initially some interesting games will be published but also a lot more vanity projects (trust me with the right sales pitch most of us can be sold any type of game be it good or bad. It has a bit of ponzi scheme feel to it in the sense i

Spielfrieks "For sale" Posting Guidelines

A For Sale ("[FS]") post is any message that is primarily meant to advertise games for direct sale or to draw attention to an eBay auction or a "Games For Sale" web page.

First, let us point out that there is a separate mailing list at Yahoo Groups, Spielfrieks Marketplace, which was established in April 2002 to serve as the "classified ads" of the Spielfrieks community. Spielfrieks Marketplace can be found here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/spielfrieks-marketplace/

For Sale [FS] posts on Spielfrieks must follow these guidelines:

1. For Sale [FS] posts must be limited to one message per person per week.

2. No game should be advertised for sale more than once by the same seller. That is, if you say "I have Password available for $50" then you shouldn't come back a week later and say "I have Password available for $5."

3. No posts should be made to remind everyone that a previously-announced eBay auction is soon ending.

4. Any For Sale [FS] posts (to either li

After a number of years expanding my collection I am in reduction mode. I know I am not alone as numerous other gamers judging by posts on the geek and other sources are doing the same. Partially its a space issue and paritally a recognition that a number of my just are not going to get played much if at all(look forward for some deals for those that are attending the Gathering of Friends). I am still buying games but a much reduced rate than in the past. Besides with Wil Weaton doing a gme podcast it is surely a sign of the upcoming gaming apocalypse where the world descends into gaming chaos (monopoly as the only game forever) :).

I'm Andrea "Liga" Ligabue from Modena. I'm the art director of PLAY: The Games Festival, the Italian greatest gamers events with more than 70 associations/clubs attending, more than 20.000 visitors and a covered area of more than 15.000 square meters dedicated only to games.

PLAY: The Games festival will take place in Modena 24-25 of March 2012.

You can read a full presentation of the festival from here:
http://www.play-modena.it/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Presentazione_2012-ENG.pdf

I want emphasize that PLAY: The Games Festival is something really different from all the other Italian events.

First of all it is all about games: no comics or other topics.
Second it is the main event for Italian gamers so, beside the presence of a lot of families and occasional players all the main Italian gamers associations and clubs will attend PLAY, offering the perfect audience also for small publishers.

Since we are closing the list of exibitors, this year we decided to make a special offer for forei

If you could have any board game box art as a poster or painting to hang on the wall in your home what would you choose ? Here is my top three based on my current game collection:

1. London - The building of Saint Paul Cathedral with Sir Christoper Wren in the forground is really appealing to me.

2. Targui - A bedouin warrior with his trusty camel against a desert background.

3. Blue Moon City - A pure fantasy piece with a fantastic building.

Others of note include the fun Um Refienbrite bicycle game cover and oddly enough the Cover art to Up Front which is sort of a semi-abstract collage of World War II. So what box cover art would you like to hang on your wall ?

The official iPhone adaptation of the board game Hive is currently
available on iTunes for free for anyone interested. It is a re-release
of the game that was removed from the store about a year ago. There is
no upgrade path for owners of the original, since it is now from a
different publisher, so they've made it free for a week or so. It
doesn't take advantage of the larger iPad screen, but plays reasonably
in 2x mode.
