ALA Annual Conference
Sunday, June 30, 1:00PM – 2:30PM
McCormick Place Convention Center, room S403

The MARS Conference Program Planning Committee invites you to a program on the usability and the user experience in libraries in this era of discovery tools and other technologies.

How are we collecting data and observing behavior to improve these interfaces to better meet our user's needs? How can we learn from what other researchers are studying and use that data to implement change?

Panel members include:

--David Bietila, Web Program Director Digital Library Development Center and Gina Peterson, Human Resources,
University of Chicago Library

--Lesley Moyo, Director, Research and Instruction Services and Tracy Gilmore, Technical Services Librarian, Virginia Tech University

--Elizabeth German, Web Services Coordinator and Kelsey Brett, Resource Discovery Systems Fellow, University of Houston Libraries

"No technology product created for libraries can reasonably satisfy the needs of all libraries "out of the box." Rather, products provide a basic core of functionality designed to serve the general needs of libraries, with configuration options to set operational and cosmetic details for individual implementations. Many libraries, however, need to implement new functionality not delivered with the base product. Libraries might be able to press the developers of the products, developed under either proprietary or open source licenses, to create enhancements to the core system to meet these needs. A more sustainable model involves the use of ap

Drupal in libraries: your help needed gathering information

Hey, all, apologies for cross posting-

Chris Evjy (Jeffco Public, Colorado) and I are putting together a
presentation about Drupal development in libraries for the upcoming
DrupalCamp Colorado conference. We could use your collective help with the
following:

*1. What communication/support/networking venues are out there for Drupal
developers in libraries? *We know about/have participated in:

-the drupal4lib mailing list
-the ALA LITA Drupal Interest Group
-the Libraries group on drupal.org: http://groups.drupal.org/libraries
-the drupalib web site: http://drupalib.interoperating.info/

...did we miss any?

*2. Does anyone know of a comprehensive, up-to-date list of
library-specific contributed modules?*

There's this one:

http://drupalib.interoperating.info/library_modules

...but it was last updated in March 2012;

And this one:

https://groups.drupal.org/libraries/modules

...which feels incomplete.

I've made a couple for trainings I've done, but they're out of date now,
too. :) Thanks in advance!

Website navigation is a key design device to help users search and browse library websites and information systems. The design of Website navigation can be simple or complex, flat or deep. In all cases, website navigation should take into account information architecture (IA) best practices, common user tasks in the library domain, user research, analytics and information seeking models.

In this four week, asynchronous, online course, you will gain insight into the art & science of IA, the discipline of labeling and organizing online information for optimal usability and findability. This course will introduce you to basic types of navigation, as well as classification schemes for organizing information. You will learn about best practices for labeling navigation, search engine optimiziation

Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted that our national study on the usability of academic and public library websites has been recently accepted for publication in ALA's Reference and User Services Quarterly (RUSQ) and the article will be coming out soon; hopefully it will prove useful in managing your library website.

There is also the link to a spreadsheet of our national findings here: http://librarywebsites.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/full-data-set.xlsx

The next step in the project is to get input directly from library patrons about both their information needs, how they use your current website, and their general thoughts on its current usability and opportunities for improvement.

Similar to our previous study we are reaching out to public and academic libraries across the country and would like to invite your library to participate.

We will send each participating library a link to an online survey to forward out to their patron email list and post on their website. It is our goal for this project to

Hi,

Does anyone make use of a Wiki style online employee manual which can be password protected? Ideally, we would like something like LibGuides, but password protected so only staff could access it from any PC online. We are thinking this way we could add video and slideshows to the manual and update it more regularly than print.

We are not looking to put anything really sensitive in the manual (Employee information, Cell phone numbers, etc) would be kept offline. Nothing Julian Assange would want!

Thank you,

Study room reservation software

Colleagues,

Your input please! The UC Berkeley Library presently uses phpScheduleIT
v.1.2.9 as its study room reservation software. Upgrading to v. 2.4.2 is
being considered, but we'd also like to know if there are other room
reservation applications we should seriously review and consider. An
application that supports unmediated reservations, and authorization via
the Library patron file would be pluses.

My list of room reservation apps so far includes:
phpScheduleIT v. 2.4.2
LibCal (Springshare)
Evanced
MRBS
Eventkeeper
Netsimplicity
Drupal modules (Drupal-powered library website coming in the next year, or
so)

Thanks in advance for your input and advice,
Lisa Weber

OCLC Hosted EZ Proxy and WMS

Hi,

Anyone out there using OCLC Hosted EZ proxy with WMS? Our IT folks would be
happy to let go of managing our local, in-house EZ Proxy server. OCLC says
their hosted version integrates with Worldshare Management System. The
problem is, I am not even remotely an IT person or systems librarian. Do you
think it would be possible for someone like me, with a limited knowledge of
EZ proxy, to maintain the hosted version? IT will help with the initial
configuration.

If you are using it, do you also use OCLC license manager product? Is this
an easier way to manage the Hosted proxy product, or could I do it without
it?

Any demos you all know of? Everything I am finding on support site just
shows how to configure and manage the local version.

Feel free to reply offline so as not to cross the product promotion
boundary for the list. I'll be happy to share responses - let me know if
you'd rather I didn't.

Best,

Morgan
