Minesota, etc. (for Minnesota)

Senate contenders Al Franken and Norm Coleman have been mining for missed and miscounted votes ever since Election Day, each one hoping to ultimately tip the scales in his favor. Coleman campaign attorney Fritz Knaak has called for a "truce" between the two camps, citing an "obscene number of ballots" being challenged in "the recount version of mutually assured destruction," according to the website MinnPost.com. Minesota is the clear winner in the Minnesota typos race, with 16 hits in OhioLINK. (Minnsota and Minnnesota are trailing with one and four respectively). Both candidates appear to have high self-esteem, but perhaps only Franken is smiling at himself in the mirror each morning, repeating: "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!"

    <title>Vendor records</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.education.libraries.autocat/17929</link>
<description>Seeing the question about shelf-ready books reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask: are there any libraries out there that get shelf-ready books and accept the records created by the vendor as the permanent record? In other words, do you consider the quality of the records that come with your shelf-ready record good enough not to enhance or upgrade? If not, why? And how do you deal with them? If you upgrade them, do you use staff to do so or some service? If you accept them (although there might be something you don't like about them), why? Or are you generally satisfied?

I am just generally interested in the kind of issues that come up at libraries who get shelf-ready books whatever the vendor.

    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.education.libraries.autocat/17921</link>
    <description>Dear all,

I would like to draw your attention to he following fact:

If you search through ISBN 354034571x, the LC Catalogue shows the tile:
"Quantum optics and quantum information : an introduction", whereas the
publisher's website (www.springer.com) says : "Fundamentals of Quantum
Optics and Quantum Information", and so did Amazon.

Which one is true? Is it a case where the publisher has changed the title
after submitting the details for CIP?

I request all of you for your kind help ion the following issue. Presently
in our library we are processing the famous "Methods in enzymology" from
Elsevier/Academic Press. But while doing that, we found that our vendor has
supplied many not so perfect copies.

Can anyone of you help me by giving the information about whether all the
volumes of this series are available in print form or not. In the verso of
the title page of some volumes the publisher has mentioned that they have
transferred the old volumes into digital print. Does it apply for all the
volumes and if not, for which volumes? My repeated query to the publisher
yielded no reply.

We are surveying catalogers in the PA/NJ area to determine interest levels. Estimated cost for the course will depend on the number of attendees. If at least 15 people attend, the price will drop to $450 per person, which does not include any travel or lodging. No dates have been set. If you are interested please reply to me with times of the year that work best for you. This does not commit you to registering; it only helps us assess whether and when to schedule the course.

<description>Typo of the Day for Librarians
Shoppp*, Shoping, Shoper* (for Shop, etc.)

"Shop till you drop" is the rallying cry of many Americans, especially
on the day after Thanksgiving, also known as "Black Friday," when
retailers hope their customers will put them "in the black." (In fact,
the phrase got its start in Philadelphia and was originally a reference
to the heavy traffic on that day.) Shoppp* gets three hits in OhioLINK
and Shoping and Shoper* get two apiece. Our picture shows a woman from
the "black bourgeoisie" inquiring of a shopkeeper: "Have you any
flesh-coloured silk stockings, young man?" Wikimedia points out that the
"caricature is not really racist in itself—and could even be
considered to be subtly anti-racist in pointing out the relative meaning
of the term 'flesh-colored'—but much of the humor which white
Americans of 1829 would have perceived in it would have arisen from the
racist preconceptions which they held." Today is Black Friday at TotDfL.
Three typos for the price of one.

<description>Typo of the Day for Librarians
Recipie, Recipies (for Recipe, Recipes)

Next to the bird, the stuffing, and the cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie is probably the dish most suggestive of Thanksgiving. OhioLINK contains a single serving of Recipie and 16 more of Recipies (two with"sic"), making it a moderate to high probability typo. (Don't truncate this turkey or else you'll pick up too many hits for words like recipient. Remember, 'tis better to give than to receive.) My great-aunt used to bake pies all year round and, before passing on, passed her pumpkin pie "secret" on to my sister, who recreated it for the family this year. Her recipe was actually Mamie Eisenhower's, whose trick was to bake the empty pie shell in the oven while cooking the filling in a double boiler. At some point, you add gelatin and fold in some egg whites to firm it up, then pour it into the shell and chill. Lots of people liked Ike and I'm sure that Ike liked the First Lady's recipe for White House Pumpkin Chiffon Pie. Thanks, Mamie!

It's been a pleasure, sitting here in my breakfast nook with my laptop,
baking a pumpkin cake and roasting butternut squash, and cooking wild
rice, reading all of the fun messages about Thanksgiving.

I'd like to say that I'm thankful for several things:
-for all of the people who pay way more attention to what's going on with
RDA and report on it when I don't have the time to do it myself.
-for the wonderful folks at Blackwell's and OCLC who helped us make WCP at
Time of Order a reality this year and saved my staff countless hours of
downloading.
-for the Tech Services staff at Loyola who go along with all of my crazy
ideas and thank me profusely when they work!

Have a wonderful holiday everybody. Now I need to go check on my squash.

pose this question:

We recently cataloged "Off a duck's back : a bag of lives" by Ronald
Hopper, published in Sussex, England by Book Guild Publishing in 2008.
The record on OCLC with a matching ISBN (ocn243550662) has a variation
in the subtitle, no place of publication, and a different publisher so
our cataloger created a new record in our system and we ftp'd it to OCLC
with our biweekly dataload (we do not catalog directly on Connexion).
However, because the ISBN is a match, our holdings symbol was attached
to the existing (vendor level) record that has the errors (and 4 other
attached libraries). I was thinking I could go in and enhance the record
but with a change in publisher as well as the title "glitch", this
doesn't seem quite right. I realize this is probably a question for OCLC
directly but I am throwing it out to Autocat-land as an example of why

Autocat traffic will probably be much lighter than usual the rest of this week. Tomorrow is the Thanksgiving holiday here in the States. The Canadians celebrated theirs last month.

Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November. The holiday dates back to 1621, when Puritans, who had just enjoyed a bountiful harvest, showed their gratitude to the Native Americans for their help by hosting a feast to give thanks. The Thanksgiving feast became a national tradition and almost always includes some of the foods served at the first feast: roast turkey, cranberry sauce, potatoes, and pumpkin pie

<description>Is there a standard practice for identifying local authors in library catalogs?

I was thinking of simply adding a note in the 500 tag, but perhaps
there's a better way?
