Bidirectional Wordprocessing With AbiWord

<pre>
Hello

I'm a new subscriber and having difficulty.

I type a sentence in Hebrew and want to insert a piece of English, say
the title of an English book , in the middle of the sentence.
I place the insertion point where I want the title but the title is
placed at the beginning of the sentence rather than in the middle where
I want it.
The title looks OK in terms of the RTL/LTR direction but is misplaced.

(I have had the same problem when using MSWord.)

Any help with this very basic problem would be appreciated.

Hello.
I am writing you because I happen to encounter some problems with Abiword. I am running Windows XP and I associated the file extension .rtf with Abiword. When I try to double click on an rtf file present on the local disk (where is installed Abiword), it opens perfectly; only when I try this procedure with a file on my external drive, Abiword opens a blank file. Is there to your knowledge a manipulation that I can do to solve that? Thank you in advance.

I ask you not to take this into account, as I got into the details and I think that the problem is not a disk-related problem but a problem related with characters management. Indeed, as I am French, I use accents in the names of my files and folders and it turns out that it is precisely from a folder with an accent in his name that I found myself unable to load the file in question. I renamed the folder and it worked.

Does anyone know if the bug 5252
(http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5252) has been fixed,
or if some workaround is available?
From the bug report page it appears that no solution has been found yet... :(

What's the use of being able to change the document background (which
is very useful in itself), if the cursor caret remains black and
therefore invisible? It makes this color scheme totally useless! This
is really frustrating!

It seems that the color options of the GUI have been grossly
neglected, since apart from the cursor caret color there are also
other things (e.g. the screen-only color of the text) which need to be
fixed.

Really disappointing.

<pre>
Thanks to all those who contributed with tips to the previous thread
(How to set text color for screen display ONLY)

Would you be willing to petition for the addition of customizable
SCREEN-ONLY colors?

A number of users (especially those with sensitive eyes) will be
benefiting from this feature, which is a real need for some. This is
also confirmed by the previous emails.

My understanding is that a proper solution is not to be found with
hacks or partial workarounds in the present AbiWord, but only with the
implementation of new features. And it would be about time. I remember
checking for this feature for the last five years, expecting it would
be implemented soon. But it never was.
Other word processors and editors already have fully customizable
colors. Why can't we have the same in AbiWord? And we are not asking
for the moon...

Those users who share my view, please subscribe to this petition and
help getting things moving. Thank you.

How to set text color for screen display ONLY?

<pre>
Hi everyone,

I have nearly decided to adopt AbiWord as my main word processor.
Only one problem stands in the way: I usually like to keep the
background color of my documents very dark (black, actually), with a
grey text color. This way, it does not strain my eyes.
I found an easy way to do this with AbiWord, by changing the document
background and the font color.

The problem is that the font color that I use is SAVED within the
document. I don't want it to be saved, because this creates confusion
when the document is opened by other word processors (a grey text on
default white background is barely visible - much less a white text on
a white background!).

The solution that I am looking for is a method to set the font color
for the screen display ONLY, in such a way that is not saved in the
file. Basically, in the same way as the background color is not saved
in the file.

How can I do this?

I thank you all for your help.

Regards,

Sergei

I'm wondering if there is a way to fix the quotation marks. If a
sentence runs to the edge of the page, and there is a quotation mark at
the end, it will wrap by itself, instead of bringing the last word with
it. Doesn't happen that often, but is quite annoying. Thanks, Wolf

I'm preparing an introductory class on word processing and have a couple
of questions.

All of the materials I've been using to prepare for the class mention
that overwrite mode is rarely used, and is typically entered by
accidentaly pressing the Insert key.

Here are the questions:

What good is overwrite mode?

Why is it included in word processing software?

Embedded image size question

<pre>

I am using the abiword command line on a web server to convert word docs to
email messages in html format. I need to embed pictures and have used that
command line option. It works well, but it appears to only work on very
small images (maybe 30k). Is this a hard limitation, or is there a command
line option I can add to allow for larger images?

I am using the command line on a CentOS 5.2/Apache web server. Thanks.

(cross-posted to abiword-user and abiword-dev-request)

Recently I filed http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13167 .
It has relevance to a problem with Etherpad-Lite
https://github.com/Pita/etherpad-lite/issues/194
which I try to solve - I am working with the Etherpad-Lite developers.

In this mail I only refer to Abiword command line use,
and only to Abiwords convert functions.

I have three installation on different servers,
but two of the three installations have the

Problem:
========
Abiword does _not_ correctly convert PDF to TEXT:
it shows the PDF file's bytes instead.

abiword --plugin=AbiCommand
Abiword&gt;convert x.pdf x.txt txt

x.txt shows the PDF file in bytes, instead the extracted text.

This happens on two of three of my installation running SLES-11 and OpenSuse
11.3 in a headless server environment (virtual machines, hosted servers).

The version on OpenSuse 11.4 is working correctly and converts the text
from the PDF file on the command line as expected.

And perhaps, can you give </pre>
