    <title>Wanted: Velomobile for a day</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.culture.transportation.humanpowered.velomobile/3042</link>
    <description>Good morning,
West Virginia University is headquarters for the national Alternative Fuels Training Center (NAFTC) and they are planning a symposium to increase public awareness of alternative transportation modes. A friend of mine is organizing the event here in WV on Sept 27 and would like me to bring vehicles that represent the latest technology in human power, in addition to giving a talk. I was wondering if anyone in the Morgantown, WV area (Pittsburgh, DC, Buffalo, etc) has a velomobile they would like to bring for the event. I'll have display space to show it to attendees all day and will be giving a 15min talk during which it will be featured. My first choice would be an Alleweder Versatile, but all others are welcome. If it isn't too far I may be able to come get it. I'll take good care of it.

Also, the event is open to the public and I'd invite anyone interested to attend as well. I may also have my electric car (Fiero) running by then and on display.

The series of Velomobile Design Seminars started in 1993 in Copenhagen.
Through 15 years the

seminars have been an important inspiration to the development of
velomobiles for practical

transport and sport.

The perspectives for velomobiles as an alternative, environmental
friendly means of

transportation are today more obvious than ever. In many situations a
velomobile can replace

a car, offering cargo space, weather protection, better aerodynamics and
higher speed than

an ordinary bicycle. People need more physical exercise for health care
reasons, to stay or

to become fit, to improve quality of life. A velomobile is a comfortable
and secure means to

get training.

increasing attention in the last 5 years. The United Nations (Conference

    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.culture.transportation.humanpowered.velomobile/3034</link>
<description>I'm not a great fan of twist shifters. They seem to lack the precise
shifting of the Dura Ace barcons that I've used on USS trikes for
years but barcons don't seem suitable for use on the Quest's 'T'
handlebar. Worse, the twist shifters are almost useless with wet/
sweaty hands - ok, wearing gloves or wrapping them in a hanky helps
but I'l thinking of swapping them out.

Any suggestions for a suitable alternative? I was considering a pair
of Deore RapidFire-type two lever shifters but I guess a pair of 'old
fashioned' thumbshifters might be worth a try if anyone still makes
them in 9sp.

Any suggestions from anyone who has tried alternatives to twist
shifters on a 'T'-style bar?

    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.culture.transportation.humanpowered.velomobile/3021</link>
<description>For several months I have been working on securing a used, towed
aerial banner to repurpose into sailcloth wheelcovers. Success!

The company that I work for prints grand-format (17' wide inkjet
printer) projects, one of which was several aerial banners for a
wireless phone company. They are printed in vertical strips and welded
together into a 150' x 40' final banner. The welding and prepping
needs to be done by an FAA-certified company, so we had this banner
returned to us so that we could reverse-engineer the finishing to do
it in-house. Typically, this done, the banner would be trash. Basura.
Landfill.

But this one banner could be repurposed and fill the world's need for
light-weight, easy-to-make fibre wheelcovers so I pestered my bosses
until they were thoroughly sick of the harrasment and begged me to
take my shit and get out. So to speak. Seventy pounds of printed and
welded banner, too big to take home in my Versatile.

Now I've got it home, beta-tested my project, and have this on offer.

Hi we have a tandem quad, but are finding it very difficult to create a
fully enclosed shell for(was thinking fabric, due to the weight, and
versatility to rollup/zip off certain sections depending on the
weather), have a look at some pics of it at

www.steppebysteppe.com.au

Its not really a standard velomobile.Since,we're having trouble
making a fairing for it at the moment(mainly creating the shape/
skeleton), has anyone done similar projects? Enclosing the quike itself
is not for speed, but rather just to protect us from the elements
(sun, wind, rain, snow etc), but it need to be aerodynamic enough from any
direction so as not to become a sail. I think the whole problem is the
size of it.....any ideas? Any suggestions of pics, or similar ones
you've built, i'm running out of ideas!

thanks

    <description>Hi all,

No the list is not dead!

Now for my question, can someone give me an idea where to find info on
changing the disk pads on a WinZip disk?

My Leitra's back disk pads are totally gone and I need to replace them.

Also while I'm on the subject of brakes. My front brake cable is not working
right, this is why my back brake is kaput. The deal is I have one cable going
to a small box and two cables coming out, one to each front wheel. Now when I
pull the brake handle inside the little box the single cable will only pull
the two cables about half way before it stops. This is enough to slow my
Leitra but not stop it. I can not pull the brake enough to stop so I use my
feet the last few meters. This is hard on my shoes. :) I know that this is a
bit vague, but I'm not a bike mechanic. Anyway any ideas on what to do?

BTW how do trikes other than Leitras do the double brakes?

Thanks,

JIM

gear cluster despite claims of only having done 5000km ?

I have been plagued with poor gear changes and poor brakes since I bought it
and have only managed 8 miles in it so far and they were not pleasant.

Brake problems - poor brakes

Found left hand wheel could be turned with one hand when brakes applied ,
right hand one could not.

These are Flevobike's own brakes not Sachs or Sturmey Archer , they have a
poor reputation but surely I can get them to work ?

Took off left wheel cannot get operating cam to come out of back plate to
grease [ copper ] so I could only squirt a little oil in it , it seems free
enough.

Got the shoes off and used a file to remove all the glaze and get down to
the pad material , as someone suggested I have rounding the leading edges.

But cannot figure out how to adjust them properly as it is almost impossible
to reach the cable clamp at the wheel end with the wheel o</description>

    <description>Hi all,

Tom Breedlove, organizer of the HPV Challenge in Portland Oregon
wanted me to beat the drum to get Velomobile people to attend the
races and event on Memorial Day weekend. If someone is willing to
organize velomobile specific events, he has the venue. For those of
you who have never been to Portland International Raceway, it is a
treat!!! This is a 9 corner sports car track, nearly 2 miles long
with lots of trees and grass in the infield. The infield also
features an expansive parking lot/pit area to hang out and test
vehicles. You can camp or stay at one of the local hotel within easy
pedalling distance of the track. To top it off the race track has
been resurfaced this year.

Happy riding,

Mark.
