anyone know the secret of how this works? An overview of the vehicle is at

Thanks Ihab, lucky I didn't read the brol thread when I was thinking of these things, there are a few nay sayers out there!

Another large front wheel design I've done (and plans are there) is at http://www.modularbikes.com.au/zeica/

For me the small wheel at the back allows for a very simple, large carrying capacity, highly visible tail box which has great advantages for a practical vehicle used for shopping and general transport. My latest bike can even carry a carton of beer, and I've done several 150k plus day rides on it. But not carrying beer!

<pre>Hi

To further my bike designs, I'm interested in publishing some of them as open source type plans. Does anyone have good reccommendations for a site that would host such a venture?

I'm interested in posting designs, getting feedback, listing suppliers etc. and the bikes I'm working on are at http://modularbikes.com.au/bigatthefront.html

The bikes can be fairly simple, fast and effective and carry reasonable loads. Already I've come across a few websites like http://www.python-lowracer.de/ and http://en.openbike.org/wiki/Main_Page and http://www.openwaterbike.com/

Thanks, Regards

<pre>I could use some input. This is a bit offbeat, but probably interesting
to lovers of workbikes.

Being a tourist town, Austin has a lot of pedicabs in it. I like
pedicabs, as I like it when people use bikes for practical purposes, and
I like big workbikes/trikes in general. Like many, I'm leery of
"pedicabs" which are large trailers (always without their own brakes)
whose gross, loaded weight far exceeds that of the mountain bike and
rider towing it by the seatpost. Known trailer crashes include
jackknifing when the bike brakes during a turn, seatpost failure, or
falls when the rider is unable to climb with the load. A trailer costs
about 1/10 of what a new, purpose-built trike does but it can be leased
out at the same rate as a trike pedicab, so they are flooding the local
market, hurting operators (not so much owners/lessors).

Most cities with pedicabs don't allow trailer pedicabs, but Austin
hasn't set such rules yet. The city is in the process of revising all
its pedicab laws in respo</pre>

A reminder: don't be like me. Safety check your wheels more often

<pre>I've seen people write that 10-speed chains don't last as long as
wider chains. Well I just replaced the Wippermann Connex 10s1 10-
speed stainless steel chain on my Bacchetta Aero after 23,762
kilometres. One of my chain wear measurement tools indicated it is
time to replace it while another tool indicated it was still in fair
condition, not to the replace mark yet. The reason why I replaced it
is because the chain has been getting noisier lately. Based on how
long this chain has lasted, I replaced it with another Wippermann
10s1 chain.

I am using Wippermann 10-speed chains on 2 of my other bikes, a SRAM
10-speed chain on one bike and KMC 10-speed chains on 2 other bikes
but as I divide my riding time between many bikes, I have yet to wear
one of these out. The only maintenance I do on my chains is applying
ProLink when the chain starts to get noisy and wiping off the excess.

<pre>Hi, all...

I've been using 20 x 1.35 and 26 x 1.35 tires on my Vision R55. I've
generally used Vredestein S-licks (now discontinued) or Schwalbe
Kojaks (which develop a lot of nicks and cracks).

To deal with frequent punctures, I tried a set of Schwalbe Marathon
Plus(es). Very heavy -- around 775 gr. But I did not get any flats at all.

However, my legs felt like concrete. My speed went down about 15%.
Riding up any rise became a chore. I thought it was my age, but I
swapped the Kojaks back, with extra rubber tubing in the vital spots,
and my speed has gone way up along with my enjoyment.

I'm thinking of getting a pair of Primo Comets with a Kevlar belt
under the tread. Though they do make a 20 x 1.35, they don't make a
26 x 1.35. But they do make both a 20 x 1.50 and a 26 x 1.50. They
pretty much slicks, and they seem to be somewhat puncture resistant.

So, does anyone have any experience with these tires?

Would it be okay to mix and match -- a 20 x 1.35 front and a 26 x
1.50 rear -- or would</pre>

<pre>I've got 2 bikes in mind to test drive: the Icebike B1 and the HP
Velotechnik Grasshopper fx. If you own or have ridden one of these bikes
would you please send me comments about what you like or dislike about the
bike? I'm driving from Richmond VA down to Lewisville NC next Monday June
6th to test ride each of these bikes.

Have I missed any other bikes that you would recommend (that are hopefully
available in the US)?

Thanks, Derryl

Reflective Tape

<pre>If FedEx freight tracking is to be believed, the green one will show up
tomorrow:

While I am planning to wax the shell (to prevent oil and other stains
from getting into the pores in the HDPE) which means nothing will likely
stick, that leaves the ABS "hatch" and HDPE wheel covers as places to
put reflective material for greater nighttime visibility. Any
suggestions on which brand of tape is most reflective and will stick?

Would white or orange be preferable for side markings (this is for use
in the US)?

Any ideas for the wheel discs that will look better than just slapping
some tape on?

<pre>While still listed on the website [1], it seems that the DualDrive hubs
may not be available. Anyone know for sure? I need one as a more
reasonably priced option to get wide range gearing compared to using a
Schlumpf BB.

<pre>Hi All

A few weeks ago, OzHPV (Australia) held our annual Challenge event. This event is very family and all - abilities friendly and includes shorter races that have everyday relavence for HPV's on the road like a Go to Whoa, Shopping Race and slalom event. Successful and enjoyable and a pleasant time was had by all. I have collated some of the links to photos and videos on the event and they are here http://modularbikes.blogspot.com/2011/04/ozhpv-challenge-2011.html .
