    <title>Answers to Questions in Exams</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.macosx/30602</link>
<description>Off Topic! Off Topic! Off Topic!

I have an n questions multiple choice exam system based on Talbot's
probsoln.sty that uses a databank in which each Exercise(i), i≤n,
comes in a number of Avatar(i, j) and where ExerciseAnswer(i, j),
which indicates witch one of the choices is correct, is recorded
after the multiple choices of Avatar(i, j).

(To clarify the terminology, if Exercise(12) is "addition of single
digit numbers", the ExerciseText of Avatar(12, 1) might be "Add 2 and
3", the ExerciseText of Avatar(12, 2) might be "Add 7 and 2", etc)

What I would be able to do is to collect in an ExamKEY the
ExerciseAnswer(i, j) for all the (i, j) probsoln.sty used when
creating an ExamTEXT.

The way things work right now, for each p ≤ n,

—with "showanswers" turned OFF, probsoln.sty picks randomly the file
Exercise(i), then Avatar(i, j) and then places ExerciseText(i, j) in
the pth position in ExamTEXT,

—with "showanswers" turned ON, probsoln.sty picks randomly the file
Exercise(i)</description>

    <title>Chinese character subscripts in TexShop</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.macosx/30587</link>
<description>Working with TexShop, I'm trying to typeset a small number of Chinese
characters as subscripts for Roman characters. The problem of
inputting and/or outputting Chinese characters in TexShop seems to
have popped up often on this list and elsewhere. I've tried in vain
to implement various publicly posted solutions: specifying UTF-8
encoding; invoking packages like fontspec; etc. But no dice.

I suspect that part of the problem is how I'm entering characters into
the .tex file in the first place. I've tried cutting and pasting in
an already rendered character, for example, and it pastes fine into
the input code, but is not rendered in output under any of the various
posted methods. Alternatively, I've tried to figure out a way to
include the character's Unicode identifier (U-9670, fwiw), but am not
sure how to do so or even whether that's a viable approach.

Any advice would be appreciated; thanks.

<description>The BBEdit version of Flashmode works with TexShop as previewer. It
requires an intelMac and OS 10.5.x or better.

To install Flashmode, please follow exactly the instructions for the
original Flashmode version for TeXShop, especially arrange the pdf and
text files in TeXShop to your liking. The position of the tex file in
BBEdit should correspond to the position of the file in TeXShop.

Using TeXShop as previewer requires that the tex file is also open in
TeXShop. This will be automatically arranged by Flashmode. The copy of
the tex file in TeXShop will also automatically be refreshed such that
its content is always identical to that of the original file.

Syncing between the preview window and the source file should be done
in TeXShop including any editing that results from it. The tex window
in BBEdit will automatically reflect these changes.

The additional Applescripts provided by Flashmode still target TeXShop
as editor, but they can be applied to any tex file open and frontmost

    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.macosx/30497</link>
    <description>Howdy,

While looking up the most recent versions of software that is to be
included in MacTeXtras (everything in MacTeX that isn't part of the
MacTeX installer package) I've noticed that many sites also have
information about installation of a TeX distribution, etc.
Unfortunately that information is often very out of date and can lead
to terrible confusion.

One example is the installation of fonts and updating map files; many
sites were never updated when the default behavior of updmap (and
other system applications) changed with the addition of -sys versions
(which behave the way the older versions behaved). I believe we've had
lots of problems with font installation and format creation because of
this.

If you are running a site with such information please update it to
agree with most recent practices.

Good Luck,

    <description>Hello,

I've just got a computer with Leopard. For the life of me, I cannot get TexShop to automatically update when I use the terminal to typeset a .tex document. This used to work in Panther and Tiger without fuss.

I have "Configure for external editor" and "Automatic Preview Update" selected in TeXShop's prefs. I use vim as editor, and from within vim I call pdflatex.

What's new to me here is that in order to see my updated PDF, I have to Command-Tab to make Texshop active first; only THEN will it update my pdf. If I just keep it on vim, I see nothing. It didn't use to be that way.

Does anyone have an idea?

<title>Installing Lucida fonts under home folder</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.macosx/30471</link>
    <description>Hi all,

So I'm installing the Lucida fonts that I just purchased from TUG
under my home folder (i.e. in ~/Library/texmf), and the instructions
are a bit too cryptic. So I need some help. I unzipped the lucida-
complete file, and I put all the files in the right places (I think)
under ~/Library/texmf. If I'm reading the instructions correctly, what
I need to do next is run updmap (not updmap-sys, because I'm just
installing them for myself, right?), but I have some questions.

(1) What should my current working directory be when I run updmap?
Does it matter?

(2) Where should I put the output files? Do I need to use the --
outputdir directory option? If so, what argument? Do I just run:

updmap --enable Map lucida.map

or do I need to use some other options?

(3) Anything else I need to do?

Thanks.

Chris

    <title>Include individual pages of a PDF file</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.macosx/30455</link>
    <description>Dear LaTeX wizards,

I'm trying to include a specific page of a given (multi-page) PDF
file. Is this possible with the graphicx package? Perhaps something
along the lines of

\includegraphics[page=2]{all_my_figures.pdf}

Thanks in advance,
Oliver

    <title>Configuring man pages</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.macosx/30454</link>
    <description>Hi all,

I'm moving machines, so I'm doing my once-every-five-years reinstall
of the lucida fonts. I'm trying to use updmap, but my system can't
find the man page. Using find, I see that it lives in /usr/local/
texlive/2007/texmf/doc/man/man1. Ugh. Anyway, what's the easiest, most
future-proof way to be able to view this man page (and all the others
in that tree) from the terminal?

<description>Brian...I don't know his last name, suggested that uploads be limited
to graphics only for fear of a malicious user uploading trojan horses.
Only "trusted" users could upload zip, etc, files. Thoughts?

Note that the psu site in the past was the repository for many smaller
projects without dedicated webspaces.

I'll be out on Monday. Someone other than me should set up their
account to get notification when changes are made to the wiki so they
can monitor in case things go bad (tomorrow, or in the future). I'm
sure catching it early would be very helpful.
