[ANN] Release 0.70.3 of Task Coach

Hi,

I'm happy to announce release 0.70.3 of Task Coach. This release fixes
a few bugs introduced in the previous release.

Bugs fixed:

* wxPython 2.8.8.1 generates images in a new, backwards incompatible
way, even when told not to do that. This bug affects users that have
an older version of wxPython installed and use one of the Linux
packages. Fixed by adding the relevant pieces from wxPython 2.8.8.1 to
the Task Coach sources.
* Opening a new task viewer didn't work.
* Closing effort viewers causes exceptions.

What is Task Coach?

Task Coach is a simple task manager that allows for hierarchical
tasks, i.e. tasks in tasks. Task Coach is open source (GPL) and is
developed using Python and wxPython. You can download Task Coach from:

http://www.taskcoach.org

In addition to the source distribution, packaged distributions are
available for Windows XP/Vista, Mac OS X, and Linux (Debian and RPM
format).

Note that Task Coach is alpha software, meaning that it is wise to
back up your task file regularly, and es

This is a preliminary release for testing purposes. It features
synchronization of tasks and notes with a Funambol server, so
indirectly with any application supporting SyncML, either natively or
through a plugin (Outlook, most recent cell phones, iPods, etc). As
the package name hints, this is highly experimental, so please backup
your files before trying it.

It turned out that the Debian package (.deb) was a bit strict in its
dependency specification making it impossible to install on Ubuntu
7.10. I uploaded a new version of the .deb package that should be
installable on Ubuntu 7.10 and later.

Distinguishing between billed and unbilled tasks

Hi,

I am trying to find a convenient and reliable way of grouping tasks (and
subtasks) within taskcoach according to the invoice to which they have
been added.

That is, I need to keep track of whether tasks have been completed (ie.
the code written, tested and put into production, etc.) and whether the
client has been billed for the work, and (most important) whether the
client has actually paid the invoice.

These 3 distinct states may be separated in time by as much as a few
months, so I don't always remember details about a given task/invoice
when a client gets around to paying it.

So far, I've resorted to creating invoice-subtasks for each invoice,
moving real subtasks under an appropriate billing subtask in the time
between completing the work and receiving payment. It's a somewhat
clunky and error prone approach.

How do you guys handle this? Is there some mechanism within taskcoach
which could be made to support this work flow?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I use subtasks a lot. When I have completed one, I would like to keep
it in the task folder, but not necessarily visible: when I have 8
completed subtasks among 10, it takes a lot of space and I cannot see
the 2 uncompleted subtasks. Would it be possible to have a "completed"
subtask "folder", where completed subtasks would automaticaly be
stored? It would only use one line, and would be readyly accessible if
needed.
Thanks

Crashes adding new tasks with 0.70.1

Hi guys,

I just had 0.70.1 crash on me for the third time today when trying to
add a new task, some seconds after I hit the "OK" button. I have
successfully added at least one task today. WinXP SP 2. I'll file a
bug report from home, but I'm not sure what more info I can contribute.

[ANN] Release 0.70.1 of Task Coach

Hi,

I'm happy to announce release 0.70.1 of Task Coach. This release
optionally brings back the tabbed user interface that was removed in the
previous release and fixes a few bugs.

Bugs fixed:

* The search control in the toolbar did not maintain state correctly for
different viewers. Task Coach viewers now each have their own toolbar
with search control.
* Marking tasks completed or changing their priority would change the
selection.
* On Max OS X, put preferences menu item in the TaskCoach menu instead of the
Edit menu to conform with Mac OS X standards.
* Focus issues: On Mac OS X, text couldn't be edited while the timer was
running. On Windows, notifications from other programs overlapping with the
main window would take away focus from dialogs.
* Prevent crash under Windows XP when dropping e-mail from Thunderbird if the
APPDATA environment variable is not defined.
* ImportError: No module named thirdparty.ElementTree. This exception would
happen when using a source distribution of Task Coach or a pac

sum of worked hours of the subtasks, not shown in main task

if I look at a task tree, the hours spent for a project (a main task)
are shown just in the subtasks, but there is no total sum of them
shown in the main task (root task).
Why is it like this? I could not find any possibility to configure it
differently.

The "root task" is showing just the total amount of the budget (e.g.
the total of hours multiplied with the hourly fee)

thanks!

exporting separate effort per task or subtask

it may be already answered, but perhaps I didn't search enough in your
old postings:

i would like to export the effort (per day or detailed) of a single
task or subtask.
ist this possible? how?

my wish would also be to have a better exporter, that would export
more excel or open-office apropriate data. The comma-separated export
has some bugs (at least for me) :
- it exports wrong the non-english signs (like the german ö, ü, ä)
- it creates some problems to excel or open office, so that some data
is placed in the wrong columns or rows

generally, I have to work a lot to transform the data from task coach
to a table that I can send to a client or colleague, regarding the
hourly situation of my work, of just ONE single project (that is: task).

thanks in advance for your explanations!
Horia

Taskcoach for Teamwork

Hi,

first of all: I love the Taskcoach. I'm using it for half a year now
and it's a fantastic tool. I'm admin and developer in a small
software-engineering company and I'm infecting more and more collegues
with the taskcoach-virus :)

Last week we had a meeting where we discussed how to improve teamwork
on special software-projects and I demonstrated the taskcoach. The
response was positive but there were some problems I like to explain
to you, maybe you want to add some features to taskcoach to make it a
teamplayer.

At first we need a field to track the progress of a task (a simple
percentage). Maybe it's possible to add a feature, that the user can
define a custom field this makes it more flexible.

My idea was, to save the different users task-files on a network
share. So the software manager can view these files. Then I want to
implement a small tool/script, that reads the xml-files and creates
some reports for the manager.

The biggest problem is, that the software manager needs to plan tasks.

good work.

Any chance you (or anyone for that matter) could add an alternate site
for downloading? All sourceforge downloads, including source code, is
blocked by Websense at work.

Just a thought.

Thanks,
