VW7.9 Remembering window position and size.

<pre>Hi:

VW seems to remember the position and size of some windows. So subsequent
windows of the same nature open in the same position and size.

What must I do to make VW save the window position and size explicitly? It
is not clear when that info is remembered or how to change what is
remembered.

Thanks,

Hi,
I just published the first public version of NextDataSetView
You can now experience treeViewColumn editing and use the DSV as any drag &amp; drop source.
Still working on the demo and on eliminating overrides.
Tell me want you think of it ?? (Or find other ways of motivation to have me cope with date selecting within DSV)

VW 7.9.1 and Pango/Cairo on Windows Vista - a working example

<pre>Hi,

Here's how I got Pango/Cairo to work on windows Vista and VW 7.9.1:

- download the GTK bundle (gtk+-bundle_2.24.10-20120208_win32) and unzip
- take a fresh image
- load the latest basic Pango package from Store (auto loads
CairoGraphics package)
- edit the LibPango and LibCairo external interface class definitions to
add the path to gtk binaries directory:
      eg #(#libraryDirectories
#('C:\...\gtk\gtk+-bundle_2.24.10-20120208_win32\bin'))
- and execute the code:

| view gc |
view := ScheduledControllers activeController view.
gc := view graphicsContext.
gc newCairoContextWhile:
                [:cr |
                cr
                        source: ColorValue red;
                        moveToX: 110 y: 20.
                (Pango.Layout text: 'Hello, World! ' , ObjectMemory
versionId printString)
                        fontDescriptionString: 'Calibri, 60';
                        showOn: cr]

The key is to set the library directory on LibCairo, otherwise you get a
load library error </pre>

<pre>I just spent a couple hours trying to determine why one ComboBoxInputFieldView was broadcasting selection changes but two others were not. The exception handler in this VW 7.5 method was hiding the problem:

InputFieldView&gt;&gt;hasEditValue
"Answer true if the receiver contains a valid edit value, otherwise
answer false. This method should be used in conjunction with
#editValue to avoid having to handle the wide range of exceptions
that may result when conversion is requested for invalid input."

                ^[self editValue. true]
                                on: Object errorSignal
do: [:ex | ex return: false]

Cincom, please consider changing the handler to at least write something to the Transcript when an error happens. Take menus for example, when there are any problems with menus the default behavior is to write a message on the Transcript that says what the error was and how to enable a debugger instead </pre>

[VWNC] VW7.9 How to find all string that need to be translated in the UI specs

<pre>Hello there,

I have an interesting problem to resolve. I have an application which
needs to be translated to the multiple languages.

I did load the "I18n" package which help to find and fix the
irregularity in the messages, like malformed messages, key collisions, etc.

The application has a plenty Dialog interactions like Dialog warn:,
request, etc. I can find all the senders or #warn: for example and
replace strings from 'Warning' to the message form:
#Warning&lt;&lt;#dialogs&gt;&gt;'Warning'.

The problem I have is the UI Specs. Are there any tools available to
help me identify where the translations are missing from Button labels,
labels, Menu Items, Window labels, etc.

Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely

I am looking for a bulk update mechanism in DB2.****

My sql is be something like below and have a bind object which has the

'update ELEMENT set

FW: Cairo and Pango viable for UI development? // Text2

<pre>
Hi Michael,

Thanks for the positive and encouraging comments on Cairo.

My only concern, is that this has been along time coming. Travis started
with Cairo in 2006 - he's left and seven years later it is still in
preview and still being "tossed around".

It seems like it's very much a "do it yourself" deal - which is all well
and good if you have the chops and time to delve into the DLLCC stuff
and compile libraries etc. The examples in Store are flaky, and Pango
seems almost impossible to get to work.

I've not been too fussed about the UI in VisualWorks up till now, but it
would just look "old and clunky" on the apps store in its current form.

I know this has been discussed at length and various avenues explored,
but I would put this at the top of the list - please tell Arden!

Cheers,

Stewart

<pre>Hi,

I've been exploring the feasibility of using Cairo/Pango for developing
a user interface that would primarily be akin to a tree Organisation
Chart.

I want it to look nice, cross platform and zoomable, and from what I've
seen good results can be obtained with Cairo.

Unfortunately as I did a bit deeper, it looks like it's still very much
experimental and a bit of a "black art". I've been unable to get Pango
to work.

I know Cairo has been on the radar for a few years now, but it is still
unsupported by Cincom and third party development seems to have waned.

What is the general consensus? Should I pursue this avenue or maybe
look at using SWIG to hook up to Qt (which I have used successfully from
Ruby, and looks quite nice), or something else?

All viewpoints appreciated.

Cheers,

Stewart

<pre>For some reason, the scrolling speed of the mouse wheel is very slow in my
VW. How can I change that?

Thanks,

GC and valueUninterruptably

<pre>Hi !

I have to run some critical code, and prevent any interruption by the GC
during the time of the process.
Looking in the archive I found
http://www.parcplace.net/list/vwnc-archive/0604/msg00070.html
about preventing the GC to run.

My process is calling a C function that callback a Smalltalk block
every 0.00853333 second.
This is working well, until the GC runs.
If I protect the call with [ .... the main call ] valueUninterruptably
I have effectively no interruptions while the process is running.
BUT : I have to give the user a way to stop this process at any time.

If I give the user an opportunity to stop,
I give at same time an opportunity to the garbage collector to interrupt
the process.

How can I give to the callback block a priority against the GC, without
being preemptive for user control ?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Vincent

VW 7.9 and Oracle on Win7 - LibraryNotLoadedError

<pre>I am running VW 7.9 32-bit image on a Win7 64-bit virtual desktop. I can run
Glorp tests using SQLite if I copy the sqLite3.dll into my bin directory at
C:\Program Files (x86)\Cincom\vw7.9\bin\win. If I copy the "Oracle Instant
Client" oci.dll from either the 32 bit package
(instantclient-basic-nt-11.2.0.3.0.zip) or the 64 bit package
(instantclient-basic-windows.x64-11.2.0.3.0) into that same directory I get
a LibraryNotLoadedError.

Any one see anything obviously wrong?

Multiple GS sessions in Polycephaly drone

<pre>Hello,
I'm looking for some diagnostic advice. Our Seaside application runs in VW, using several images, each with several GS sessions. One 'dispatcher' image communicates to each application image with OpenTalk for status and control, and redirects initial logins. All works fine.

I wanted a simpler way to manage this multi-image setup, so I wrote a version that uses Polycephaly. All works: each drone is able to log in to GemStone and serve a Seaside interface on its own port.

Our web server setup allows for multiple shared GS sessions, and it works fine in the separate image configuration. It also works fine if I spawn a DebugMachine instead of a ViritualMachine. However, if I use a VirutalMachine, logging in the second GS session locks up the Seaside interface and I get an 'Connection can not reopen!' on the ExternalWriteStream for that drone.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose this?

It's probably a unique mix of Polycephaly and GS; it would be cool to hear of another setup.

FWIW: I have...</pre>

<pre>Hi,

what is your preferred smalltalkish way to model enums with instance
specific behavior and why? For example, I could define an abstract class,
say MyEnum, and a singleton subclass for each item.
