And of course, as part of improving the new person's experience, all-included QuickStart downloads would be a potential improvement.

Hi--

(From the 2008-03-19 Squeak board meeting minutes...)

Thanks to everyone who has been discussing the squeak.org website.
It is our unanimous recommendation that Janko lead the web team, and
continue coordinating work on the Squeak website. Our main concerns are
that the site be "search engine friendly", and that content updates
happen in a timely fashion. While we don't think a change in the site's
infrastructure is strictly necessary to address those concerns, we like
what Janko has done so far and appreciate the energy he has brought to
the task.

We exhausted the hour we had for the meeting before addressing
Brian Rice's request (about updating the content at the current site).
Sorry about that, Brian. Speaking for myself, it looks like Janko's demo
is far enough along that Brian might be able to make the updates there.
I'm hoping that he and Janko can come to some agreement about this. As
the Teams coordinator, I'm happy to help further that discussion.

      Finally, the board

Since we have some prospective new team members and leaders it's
probably a good time to talk about community server issues that affect
the website team. None of this will be news to existing team members
but perhaps having it all together here may be of some use even to them.

Backups

Currently the entire system is backed up both locally and remotely via
rsnapshot. The local backup is daily and we store 7 of these (1 week's
worth). The remote backup is 4 weekly and 12 monthly backups.
Rsnapshot uses rsync to transfer files.

One aspect of this is that the granularity of the backup is on the level
of a file. So in the local backup for example if there is a file on the
system that changes at least once daily then each backup will contain a
full copy of that file. This results in 8 copies of the file, this is
minor for small files of course but can become an issue with
multi-megabyte files, for example image and changes files. Bacause of
this it would be really helpful if the website were to use some ot

Dear Webteam,

Has anyone here investigated/estimated the effort it would take to move to Pier?

I would like to do that investigation and put together some sort of action plan.

If I read the situation correctly, the biggest push for a technology
upgrade is twofold:

- Persistence right now is not ideal.
- We need an implementation of a CAPTCHA to stop spammers from
spamming via "Contact Us".

What did I miss? Some people suggested the look and feel should also
be considered during such an upgrade, but I don't think that is a
major driver.

If the Pier upgrade can be done successfully and smoothly, I would
want to do an integration to http://recaptcha.net/learnmore.html to
stop the spammers.

Next steps then:
- Has anyone looked at a Pier upgrade?
- Shall I just grab the current image, start playing with it test the
viability of an upgrade?

Demo of squeak.org on Aida/Scribo ready

Dear Squeakers,

As promised I prepared a demo of current Squeak website migrated to
Aida/Scribo CMS. I migrated both design and first level of content to
show, how flexible is Scribo in dealing with both different design and
things like Url format in case of SmallWiki. You can see demo here:

http://squeaksite.aidaweb.si:9000

Demo is actually pretty complete, what is still missing is a dynamic
tree menu on the left (currently is static) and some other minor
things. In any case with this demo I convinced even myself that moving
Squeak website is definitively possible and it will open further
improvements on content, spreading authoring to more people, adding more
dynamic content, etc etc.

I hope that you are now a bit more convinced that two days ago...:)

Best regards
Janko

Hi Web Team,

I have a suggestion, that maybe is a time to include Aida/Web on
http://www.squeak.org/Projects/ too. As you know Aida runs on Squeak now
and I'm slowly migrating to Squeak my production servers too. I hope
soon the website aidaweb.si will run on Squeak instead VW :)

If you agree, then I would propose to add to Web Application Development
something like:

AIDA/Web (http://www.aidaweb.si) is a web framework and application
server for building complex web applications simply and elegantly, in
MVC fashion, with REST-like nice looking and bookmarkable url links and
integrated user and group management.

And BTW: there is still an old SmallWiki mention, which is Pier now.

Thanks very much and best regards
Janko

consistently above 90% filesystem usage on box2 and I foresee a need for
more filesystem space in the next few months. So I decided to remove
the 6 'hourly' snapshots being made each day and for now there will just
be daily snapshots (a weeks worth). As far as I'm aware Goran continues
to be running his regular remote backups. While I'm on the subject
another remote backup would really be nice. Requirements include 100MB+
diskspace and the ability to backup on a regular schedule (using
rsnapshot/rsync).

Once the election is over and the new Board is settled in I plan to make
it a priority to get better connected to our current financial status so
we can plan better for upgrades/etc.

Squeak.org is running on Smallwiki and the captcha should probably run

Now I ask the community if someone could implement this. Please!

Hallo!

My intent is to put together a platform which I will refer to as a
collaborative end-user platform directed at work culture and the
creation of work.
It is to be based on a personal knowledge management platform using
tools from a small group of software product owners, I have drawn together,
to create the platform.
I am about to publish a book in both German and English on German
Unemployment. Two sites also in German and English will carry the platform
and market both Book and Platform.
The platform is directed towards end users being able to create a
personal KM application as their "protection" against job-loss and to
increase
their value in today's competitive world.
The core of the platform is twofold:
1. How to create a data-model covering what one wants to research and
2. How to research and write in two languages, English and German.
There will be a number of additional modules and tools offered to
enhance the ability to create personal KM bases.
