Cost of a local trusty MacRuby Contractor

<pre>Hi there

I am desiring a macruby app...badly... I have a burning desire to build
a few of them, *three specific ones*.
One is really cool, actually two are really cool, and the third is
really small (so it boosts its cool factor to being viably cool)

The ones that I have in mind are finite projects, that I know are
achievable. I want to do them as my own IP, until I get them published.

However I am already saturated with a full time position and some 'other
stuff' for my time off.

I want to have 'contract for hire' agreements , I.e. if i make my cool
apps (three of them) I don't want the contractor I paid making his own
clones, or having a hand in getting clones made (no fair).

I am not the richest guy in the world so I cant pay the rates like
rohan.deshpande-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w&lt; at &gt;public.gmane.org's $750/day, he posted back in feb for example
(I am not saying your not worth it Rohan, I am just saying I cant afford
it).

I would want to play a hand in the softwares design and architecture,

Looking for advice on starting Ruby Testing Group

<pre>
I was a Java developer, and I am now transitioning to Ruby and/on Rails. I
went through Code Academy here in Chicago to help me focus and become more
ingrained in the Ruby community here.

A lot of the other students were new to development, so there were a lot of
things that could not be covered in detail. One topic that was skimmed over
was testing. I have mentioned that I would like to start an RSpec study
group here, and I would like some advice on how to go about it. (I should
probably call it a "Ruby Testing Study Group", but I first used the term
"RSpec Study Group", and it kind of stuck.)

One possibility is to have some people go through "The RSpec Book", perhaps
covering a chapter a week or something like that. The disadvantage is that
if someone misses a week, they might be left behind by the rest.

One person suggested meeting one a week, and perhaps for the first week go
over a chapter in "The RSpec Book", the next week having a hack night where
the group writes some tests for some</pre>

<pre>I was surprised to find that I think the greatest interest in my last talk was in the discussion of what advantages Postgres has.

While I did a polemic on Postgresql vs MySQL back in the day:

&lt;http://sdruby.org/podcast/55&gt;

… and it’s still pretty much relevant, if there is interest, I could do something that’s less of a polemic and more a technical overview of the features that would be available to you should you switch to Postgres (or that you just may not be aware of even if you are using Postgres), and what they’re for.

I’m thinking things like partial and functional indexes, custom data types, the advanced programming features, hstore and Postgis.

I could do a presentation on these features at the next meeting, or perhaps in a month or so if y’all don’t want too all Postgres all the time(™). :-)

SMALLER JAVASCRIPT PACKAGES WITH THE RAILS ASSET PIPELINE
Marc Leglise shows how to break up your large application.js into logical chunks, leveraging more power from the Rails 3 asset pipeline. Building on last month's talk by Rafael Cardoso, this method allows you to separate concerns about download sizes from triggers for page-specific javascript.

RULES IN POSTGRES
Postgres has a powerful feature called rules that let you re-write incoming queries. Rules are similar to triggers in Postgres, but much more efficient. Guyren Howe shows how to use rules in some common use cases.

RAFFLE
We'll be giving away a few books, a shiny new Peepcode, software licenses, and Heroku credit!

AFTERPARTY
After the meeting, we'll head over to Rock Bottom Brewery for a round or two of beer.

<pre>Anyone in a theoretical mood today? I have a team debate going on re:
Magic Numbers, more specifically a case where literals are not magic,
and never will be magic.

I posted the story here http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/4100627.
Robert Klemme piped up (good enough for me), but a bigger sample of
opinions would be better.

It's a trivial detail, but hey what's the point of good coding
practice if you aren't going to hash out semantics over the details I
figure.

If'n yer in the mood, all opinions welcome. Thanks.

<pre>

I'm running Rails 3.2.3 / Ruby 1.9.3-p125 at Heroku. The site owner
reported that a form very occasionally didn't update the database, which I
confirmed. So I tried it locally, where I use MySQL, and finally saw it
after many tries. The expected UPDATE between BEGIN and COMMIT once in a
while is not there (http://pastebin.com/zkuXPnA2).

Could this be a caching issue? Or what?

Thanks,

Scott

<pre>In case you haven't heard yet, Matz pushed the source code of his new Ruby
implementation: mruby on GitHub.
A little later MobiRuby was announced, the project aims to let developers
write iOS and Android apps in Ruby.
I wrote an article on these two projects if you want to read more:
