<pre>the term 'subform' in 4D is really overloaded.

While maybe no one else cares I often find it confusing.
subform - a widget
subform - a 4d native included are showing related records
subform - might be a list box
subform - (legacy) an included area showing subrecords
subform - might be an Area list pro object

There might be more uses for the word. Of the above possible uses for the term, all but one always references a display area which shows related record information. Most often in a listing style format, on an input form.

subform in the context of widgets does not necessarily mean a listing formatted display area, nor does it necessarily even mean displaying related record information, and while I haven't not used these yet, I do not believe that they even need only be on entry forms.

personally, I would like to see/hear either the term 'widget' used exclusively for widgets, or some other term used to describe/reference them, other then 'subform'

My ISP just did a LAN upgrade, new Fibre 'Modem', new router.

On the old setup the $3 parameter in the "On Web Authentication" would have

Now it shows the router address and my ISP has no idea why or how to fix
it. Can anyone assist or point me in the right direction?

Any thoughts?

<pre>Hi all,

I used for years a routine to reduce the image size according to the principle:

READ PICTURE FILE($MyDocPicture;$MyPicture
// Calcul of new size =&gt; coefficient
$MyPictureReduced:=$MyPicture * Coefficient
WRITE PICTURE FILE($MyDocPictureRéduit;$MyPictureReduced;"JPEG")

It worked perfectly for years but I realized that since the beginning of the year, the picture size is not significantly reduced.

Here is a numerical example:
Original image 4272x2848 2.8 MB Quality 0.82 provided by DxO
Reduced in 2012 to 1620x1080 image to a weight of 768 kb
Reduced in 2013 to 1620x1080 for a weight of 1 983 kb by the same method
If I open it with Preview and I ask to adjust the size (without changing anything), it is reduced to 690 kb

I'm a little confused ...
What could change?
- Not the program, I took out the version from 6 months ago
- Not the picture
- Probably not Mac OS, perhaps a rise minor version
- 4D 13.2 in both cases

Additional information, I looked at the pictures in Graphic Converter</pre>

<pre>Morning.

I was told by 4D person that this could be done but he cant tell me how and
he can't remember how he did it....

I have a request for a project to allow users to dynamically change the
listbox headers and then use that choice to add to an array. What I have
works unless the user decides they picked the wrong choice and wants to go
back and change it. I have no way to tell the method "oh wait its really
this one." This is what I have so far and as I said it works okay for the
initial choice.

$evt:=Form event
vtColumnHeader:=""

Case of
        : ($evt=On Header Click )

$pFocus:=Focus object ` find out what header we are using
                vtColumnHeader:=Self
$header:=PopObjects{PopObjects} `find the name of the
selection

                BUTTON TEXT(vtColumnHeader-&gt;;$header) `change the column
header to the right selection

                $vp:=Self-&gt;

<pre>I have a client who wants to use CatBase to produce a telephone directory
in Arabic.
He has imported a spreadsheet that contains names in both Arabic and
English. The Arabic names appear in an Arabic font and the English names
appear in a normal (Latin) font.

First question: Does 4D just automatically display the Arabic characters in
the default Arabic font? (I guess the answer must be Yes, since the field
is not multi-style). that is cool.

Although the Arabic text displays correctly on data entry forms, the User
environment, and listboxes (as far as I can tell), the raw data just seems
to contain a load of question marks. For example, if I look at the field
contents in the debugger it just shows the question marks and if I export
that text to a text file, all I get is question marks. I've set:

USE CHARACTER SET("ISO-8859-6";0)

The database is in Unicode mode.

How do I get Arabic text out?

I'm having problems with a component method which calls New process to start a method in the host database: I find that sometimes (unpredictably) this causes 4D to crash, and it's worse with 13.3 than with previous versions. I'm wondering if I've transgressed this rule.

I've come up with these:

FIRST RECORD
NEXT RECORD
PREVIOUS RECORD
LAST RECORD
GOTO SELECTED RECORD

QUERY
QUERY BY EXAMPLE
QUERY BY FORMULA
QUERY SELECTION
QUERY SELECTION BY FORMULA
QUERY SELECTION WITH ARRAY
QUERY WITH ARRAY

ALL RECORDS
ONE RECORD SELECT
REDUCE SELECTION
SCAN INDEX

Can you think of any others?

If you use AreaList Pro 8.2 displaying fields does it load records?
I assume it is using SELECTION RANGE TO ARRAY internally?

Reason why I'm asking, I'm looking at a db that is calling Load Record
a helluva lot!

<pre>A client sent me a copy of their database, which is behaving very weirdly.

When I open it, many of the fields that are supposed to be indexed are not.
If I open the field inspector dialog and try to select one of the Index
option, it immediately reverts to "None" - it will not let me index the
field.

I can open a different data file and index some fields,, no problem. Open
up the weird data file with the same structure and the indexes have gone
and cannot be recreated.
I've deleted the .4dindx file - no difference.
The data file is not locked.

Any ideas why this would happen? How to fix it?

Thanks!

Pat

v12.5 Mac OS server hangs

<pre>I have a site that's been experiencing periodic server hangups for nearly a year now. There is indication of a memory leak in that, prior to each freeze, free memory begins to diminish more as a function of accumulated run time than as a function of connected users. There are 3 stored procedures that seem to behave fine, but neither I nor TS can identify what's going on. The firm has a weekly work cycle and freezes do have some consistency regarding when they happen, but over the course of a year we haven't been able to isolate the cause.

We can reduce, but not eliminate, the frequency of freezes by restarting the server every day. Even doing that, we've seen freezes as frequently as 2 hours apart.

One thing I wonder about for which TS doesn't offer any info is aborted processes. At the end of each workday, there are approaching 100 of them on the server. They persist overnight until users log in again at which point the process numbers are reused. Does anyone know anything about these? Do they consume res</pre>

Long delay between print jobs on Mac

<pre>We are having real slowness when printing to a label printer on the Mac. Here are the details:

We are setting up the printer to use the raw driver through CUPS (using the manufacturer's driver doesn't speed it up). The printer is connected via USB and is marked as shared. We build a text file containing label printer commands (exact value depends on the printer language, but in every case the text file is quite small).

We print using LEP with the lpr -l command. The print queue fills very quickly and the first label prints right away. After each label, however, there is about a 5 second delay before the next label starts printing.

The printer is capable of much faster printing. On Windows it prints continuously with no discernible pause between labels.

It seems to me that the OS is causing the delay between sending the print jobs to the printer. Any Mac gurus out there have a solution?

Much appreciated,

Joshua

Compiler declarations in v13

<pre>I am working on moving my first conversion of a database from 4D v12 to v13. This database dates back to 4D 2004.

I am now seeing many errors that state:

The parameter $1 has not been explicitly declared in the typing methods (Compiler...).

I declare variables and parameters in each method itself. The variable declarations are recognized but not the paramter declarations. S how should I declare parameters?

I have been thinking of declaring everything in a Compiler method but it hasn't been recognized by the compiler and I thought 4D prefers you put the declarations in a Compiler method. What is the best way of making the declarations?

How do you create a Konstant in 4D?
