you are interested in doing this important work.

A question for you:

Sometimes it can feel like the Board of Directors is a bit divorced
from the rest of the GNOME project. Is this a problem, in your view?
If it is, what do you think can be done about it?

Questions for the board election candidates

Hi all, I have a few questions for the candidates in the upcoming
election to the board. They are obviously shaped by my interests, but I
believe that other Foundation members may be interested in the answers
as well.

1) "Open Source" or "Free Software"?

This is about personal philosophy: Do you prefer the pragmatism of the
Open Source Initiative or the political idealism of the Free Software
Foundation? (Some of the candidates have already flagged a stance on
this.)

2) Overhaul of GNOME's git infrastructure

I personally believe that the way the GNOME git system is set up is a
bit antiquated and doesn't use git to its full potential. It's fine for
developers with commit access, but  contributors without have to create
individual patches and attach them to bug trackers or convince the
maintainers to look up their personal branch hosted somewhere else and
merge in. In a time when GitHub is setting the standard for ease of use
when it comes to forking, merging and development, GNOME is lagging
behind.

After serving 4 terms on The GNOME Foundation board of directors, I will
be stepping down at the end of this term.

I would like to thank everyone in the community who has supported me
and allowed me to represent them on this board.  It has been a
profoundly rewarding and truly inspirational experience to help The
GNOME Foundation and GNOME community to grow.

The years that I have served on the board have been exciting and
productive times.  I am proud to have served as president and secretary;
to have been involved with the development, release and celebration
surrounding the GNOME 3 release; and to have helped with the
development of successful GNOME programs like the Outreach Program for
Women.  In my time on the board, I have witnessed so much growth within
the community.  Since then, the GNOME Foundation has hired two executive
directors, started having successful annual summits in Asia, and has

Boston Summit?

Hey guys.

Looking at my fall calendar I noticed that the Boston Summit* and Grace
Hopper overlap, the latter being 3-6 October and Columbus Day weekend
being 6-8 October. Also, as I understand it, there will be a FLOSS day
associated with Grace Hopper taking place on 7 October. My initial
reaction was to just forget about Boston Summit. But then I remembered
the lesson from last year: Traditions can be broken. ;) ;)

So.... I realize it's still quite early, but are we planning on having
the Boston Summit in Boston and over Columbus Day weekend?

Hi,

I was recently accepted in the GNOME Foundation and this is my
introduction letter.

I studied SW Engineering at the University of Coruña from 2000 to
2006, at the very same faculty that will host the GUADEC this year. I
carried out my final year project as an Erasmus student at the
University of Stuttgart, working on improvements to a BPEL engine
built on J2EE. After that, I stayed in Germany for another 7 months as
an intern at IBM Deutschland, writing and managing web sites.

I joined Igalia in 2007. Joining a company with a flat structure and
focused on innovating on Free SW was too good an offer to miss :-)

My first assignment was on the ringschart widget for Baobab, the GNOME
disk usage visualizer. Most of my work since then has been on mobile:
the email system, application manager and input methods for Maemo, and
the (Qt-based) MeeGoTouch widget library for MeeGo.

Next board elections and candidacies

I am *not* running for the next board elections; maybe you should.

Why I am saying this? Because if I was one of your candidates in any of
the previous elections, I think it is good you know in advance that I am
not running.

I encourage you to run for the next board elections if you have not
thought in that already.  In particular, if you would like to see
something fixed or improved (as it was my case when I ran the first time
I became elected).

You should be aware that as in patches, your ideas might be well
received and approved, or they might need some extra work or they could
be rejected (the decisions are taken by 7 directors).  However, the
discussions help to bring food for thoughts and awareness.

Do not be afraid if you think you are not 'popular', the board of
directors is not a popularity contest (I was elected even though I am
low profile).

I am posting this about two months late, but I am now a proud member of the
GNOME Foundation[1]. Therefore, I would like to introduce myself to the other
Foundation members and tell a bit of my history with the GNOME project and
technologies.

TL;DR I did a few small things here and there related to GNOME, and generally
like to play with multimedia technologies.

My name is Guillaume Emont, though some people call me Guij, which is sort of
an abbreviation of my irc nickname, which is guijemont (you can find me at
least on #grilo and #gstreamer).
I think I first discovered GNOME a long time ago (I'd say circa 2000), and
liked it, but didn't really use it on a regular basis, partly because I didn't
find it obscure and "leet" enough (yeah, I was a stupid teenager), and partly
because I didn't have a lot of RAM on my computer then, therefore going towards
minimalism (you know, Window Maker).

Hi All,

I've been a regular contributor to the Friend of GNOME program for some
time, but this week a security hold was put on my credit account, and so
the paypal debit didn't go through.  I want to make sure my contribution
goes to GNOME, but don't see a clear way of re-submitting my payment.
Does anyone know who I could contact to have the payment request
re-submitted? The security hold on my account has been lifted.

While I'm on the topic, I think that current Friend of GNOME
contributors get a free membership to LWN.net, but my LWN membership has
lapsed. Is that benefit still in place?  If so, how can I get it
re-enabled?

Hi,

I've joint recently the GNOME Foundation and also this list so I would
like introduce myself briefly.

My name is Andres Gomez, and I'm from a Spanish town called León,
although I'm now living in Helsinki.

In 2003 I joined Igalia and, nowadays, I'm a partner of the company.

Before joining Igalia I was involved in GNOME mainly as a user but,
since then, I've been working in a daily basis with all the technologies
involved in the project.

Since 2006 I focused in GNOME Mobile/Maemo and is in this area in which
I've been working the last years.

Among other works, I'm the lead developer of GDigicam[1], the library on
top of GStreamer's CameraBin used in the Camera integrated in the Nokia
N900, but I've also been developing some other pet projects such as
"Application's Fullscreener" [2] and the "Automatic Skype Launcher for
Maemo 4"[3].

I'm really happy of having joint the GNOME Foundation and this mailing
list.

Conference about Gnome in my french school

Dear Sirs,

Before everything else, I will introduce myself. I am actually a french
student. I am studying for my engineer degree in computer sciences.

My school teaches us a lot of different contents during the formation.
There are some conferences during the 3 last years of this formation,
during which students can listen to professionals working in their future
domain.

Unfortunately, a very few are about Linux world or "just" explain some very
tricky points. A lot of students are thinking that Linux is only for
scientific and "hard" problems resolution. Personally, I don't think so, so
I want to show this point of view to students of my school.

I think that Gnome helps to make the Linux world more user-friendly and
make able non-fully qualified people to access to the Linux provided tools.
With this goal in mind, I would like to organize a conference in my school,
also in french language, with for title "Linux is for common users too" or
something like that.

there is on the Evolution email client, I recently finished first part of it's 
WebKit port.
