[mb-users] Advice needed: J. Brahms Variations on a Theme ofPaganini op. 35

MBz work list has a complete set of "J. Brahms Variations on a Theme of Paganini op. 35":
http://musicbrainz.org/release/14b65335-57a1-4dbf-aa22-8a4d1dfe980d

The track list of the CD in hand has a different naming of the variations/movements of this work:
http://musicbrainz.org/release/e42822f3-f517-4830-9a21-fe24b8ecc35e

This listing is in line with what we can find on Allmusic:
http://allmusic.com/work/variations-28-on-a-theme-of-paganini-for-piano-in-a-minor-op-35-c129207/parts-movements
and other like: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Johannes-Brahms-1833-1897-Paganini-Rhapsodien-op-35/hnum/5873410.

The question I have is, what has to be done to make the correct ARs?
If I just relate the variations the movements of the recordings and that of the works would not match! I will not do that.

Who has a good advice on how I should proceed.

there are two (or maybe 3 or 4) separate children's choirs that are credited in

Here's what I've found so far:

http://musicbrainz.org/search?query=hawaiian+roller+coaster+ride&type=recording&method=indexed
is a search for the song title, and brings up a number of choirs credited:
Kamehameha Schools Children's Chorus
North Shore Children's Choir
Key Cygnetures
TOWER New Zealand Youth Choir

I have the album Lilo & Stitch [1], which credits the song to Kamehameha Schools
Children's Chorus [2].

Amazon, at [3], which is the album Now That's What I Call: Disney! ([4]),
credits the song to Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu/North Shore Children's Choir & Key
Cygnetures, and MB adds TOWER New Zealand Youth Choir to that.

However, I've compared the two--in Audacity--and they are the same recording

Hello there,

I was wondering if it is acceptable to add AllRovi.com links to entries
(artists, albums, etc.). The unique identifiers at the end of the URL is
the external identifier for the Rovi DB. So, for example, 'The Antlers'
are at http://www.allrovi.com/name/mn0000739713 and within the Rovi
database, one would query based off of 'MN0000739713' to retrieve
information. The URL is exposed to the public so I assume it is okay.
Currently, Allmusic.com URLs are accepted as a clearly defined URL type,
but that does not use the Rovi external ID type.

For my own research, it is useful to have these IDs. If the URLs are
inserted into MusicBrainz DB, then one could theoretically translate from
Rovi DB information to MusicBrainz DB without too much hassle. An example
'album' in Rovi is here (http://www.allrovi.com/music/album/mw0000814003)
for 'Hospice' by The Antlers. The album concept in Rovi is similar to
'release group' and there are releases within the album hierarchy in Rovi.

Hi,

Pavan has done some work on MBS-4561 [fn:1] to improve the display of
disambiguation strings [2]. To briefly summarize MBS-4561, the problem
is that currently disambiguation strings appear larger than surrounding
text, when displayed in release recording relationships.

The solution given in the code review is to now make disambiguation
comments *smaller* than surrounding text, but I think this is equally
inconsistent.

My preferred solution is to not make disambiguation comments anything
other than different coloured text, and to not change their size at
all. This would mean that disambiguation comments are always the same
size as surrounding text.

I need to get other people's help to decide which implementation we
use. Do we:

a) Use Pavan's work and have disambiguation comments 80% of the
 surrounding text

Or do we

b) Remove any special font-size rules from disambiguation comments
entirely, and have the same size as adjacent text.

I'm voting for a. I'll leave this open for 10 days, so whatev

At that time I only entered the track lists, not more. Now I have started to do the relations and because of the 100 CDs the release

release alone is endless and 4 to 6 times a timeout is asking me if I want to wait or stop the download.

I suppose everyone else who is going to use this release will encounter the same issue. Therefore I'm thinking of splitting this release.
This is not a foreseen way to build releases but because of the described issues with the existing release I feel that something has to
be done to make the work more practical.

I was thinking of either splitting the release into 100 parts (one for each CD) or some other partitioning, let's say parts of 25 or something else.

Since I do not know if that is a good idea I would like to receive othe

Personally I would welcome such additions, just like a release is
welcome even if you don't have added its barcode, or a work even if
you haven't added the lyricist, etc. (Of course it's even better if
that info is added as well, and hopefully it will be later.)

I think this could come up now and then, for example to get a listing

not what was on the B-side.

Hi guys, I just noticed an interesting edit.
http://musicbrainz.org/edit/16620738
where mk1983 <http://musicbrainz.org/user/mk1983> is modifying the official
track/recording title with a differentiation comment. He's commented an
official guideline supporting it
here<http://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Titles/Extra_title_information>
.

I was curious if this guideline (of which I wasn't aware of) is out of date
since I was of the opinion that that the disambiguation comment was the
place to put such information in the case of same titled
track/recording/release titles.

What do you guys think?

Sebastien

[mb-users] CD TOC?

Ok,
I just ripped a CD 'Two Sides of Peter Banks" by Peter Banks with Sound
Juicer under Linux. It couldn't find the CD in Musicbrainz, so I entered
all the track information and ripped the disk.
I then logged into Musicbrainz and selected 'Submit track names..."
On Musicbrainz, it took me to the 'Matching CDs' page.
I entered 'Peter Banks' in the artist search.
It showed me Peter was already in the database. I selected him and it
showed me a page with the tracks from the CD, but not exactly as I had
entered them. So it was already in the database.
"Please select the medium you wish to attach the CD TOC to"
"TOC" is not in the beginners guide definitions.
I'm guessing 'table of contents', but it could be anything.
Does selecting this list of track names and clicking the 'attach cd toc'
button add the version of the CD I have to this one in the db?
Thanks,
-Mike

[mb-users] Release Status Terminology and Questions

I cannot find anything in the documentation to regarding the release status
field. In particular I would like definitions of "promotion", "official"
and "pseudorelease".

A few examples: is a promotion a vinyl record, or cd that is ONLY given to
DJs for free for airplay, or does it include albums, created, and
distributed (either free or at nominal cost) to "promote" a particular,
company, brand, service or charity? Often albums in the second instance are
issued as "special products" by the label (Columbia Special Products) and
have limited distribution (exclusively by a retail outlet with their brand
name or logo on the packaging). So are these official or promotion?

Next, what is the difference between a "pseudo-release" and a "mixtape"
(user-generated compilation)?
I have seen a few things entered as pseudo-releases entered and I am unclear
as to why they would merit inclusion.

Many sites are now offering digital only mp3 compilations with cover art.
Are these to be entered and classified as pseudo-r
