Linux Expo to Sponsor Software Freedom Day Activities

The Linux Expo of Southern California, parent organization of the popular Southern California Linux Expo, announced today that it will sponsor events during the observation of Software Freedom Day 2011, to be held Sept. 17, 2011.

By doing so, the Linux Expo expands its efforts to popularize the use of Free and Open Source Software beyond the Southern California Linux Expo, which is held annually in February.

The Linux Expo will accept proposals from Southern California groups for events observing Software Freedom Day, and will issue five grants of up to $500 each to support each event. The funding may be used for space rental, media duplication, printing costs or other expenses related to their event.

Groups from San Luis Obispo County south to the California-Mexico border, and from the Pacific Ocean east to the California-Nevada border, are encouraged to apply.

Interested groups can send their proposals to press-+lTk9Ns4B/5zigNL44B2PbhSVCA9We0C< at >public.gmane.org All proposals must be received by July 31, 2011.

SCALE Report: SCALE 9X ends on a high note

SCALE REPORT - 3 March 2011

SUMMARY: Successful SCALE 9X ends on a high note; higher attendance numbers translate into healthy forecast for Linux and Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) in 2011

LOS ANGELES -- The 9th annual Southern California Linux Expo wrapped up three days of sessions and speakers -- and two days of exhibits -- on Sunday afternoon with a new record for attendance.

By the end of the three days, SCALE had printed over 1,800 badges, an increase over last year of approximately 20 percent. Some of the sessions were standing-room only while over 100 exhibitors got to meet the record-breaking crowd.

“Because SCALE is the first large Linux and FOSS show in 2011, it serves as an indicator of how the year may go,” said Orv Beach, the SCALE 9X publicity co-chair. “From what we’ve seen this weekend at SCALE, the upcoming months look very bright for FOSS.”

The SCALE 9X presentation video and audio is currently being compiled and will be available soon. The location will be provided in the final SCALE 9X wrap-up to come soon.

We look forward to seeing you again at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport hotel for SCALE 10X in February 2012.

SCALE UPDATE: Going ‘uptown’ with UpSCALE,
while Birds of a Feather flock together at SCALE 9X

LOS ANGELES – You have something to say, but you’re only allotted several minutes and the presentation slides automatically change as you speak. Think you can do it?

The 9th annual Southern California Linux Expo will hold its UpSCALE talks on Friday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. in the La Jolla room at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport hotel. It is part of SCALE 9X, the first Linux expo of the year, which is held at the same venue from Feb. 25-27.

UpSCALE talks, held in the style of the Ignite presentations made popular by various O'Reilly-sponsored events, allow the six scheduled participants five minutes to speak on a topic, accompanied by 20 automatically-advanced slides provided by each speaker. This makes UpSCALE a fast-paced, fun event for participants and audience.

For a schedule of the talks, visit http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale9x/special-events/upscale

Also, SCALE 9X will continue the tradition of providing space for groups to meet and discuss their common interests. These sessions are commonly referred to as Birds of a Feather sessions, or BOFs. The BOFs will be held on Friday and Saturday evening at the Hilton.

Groups who are interested in meeting at SCALE 9X can see which slots are available by visiting http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale9x/special-events/scale-9x-birds-feather and then contacting Gareth Greenaway at gareth< at >socallinuxexpo.org with a description of the session and the top two time preferences.

Hotel rooms in demand at SCALE 9X venue – don’t miss out;
Open Source Software in Education schedule affirmed

LOS ANGELES – With a little over two weeks left before the first-of-the-year Linux expo, the ninth annual Southern California Linux Expo is shaping up to set the tone for an outstanding Linux year in 2011.

If you haven’t taken advantage of SCALE’s hotel deal at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport hotel – the site of SCALE 9X on Feb. 25-27 – you’d be well advised to hurry. The $109 per night rate is available as long as allotted rooms last. SCALE attendees can take advantage of this deal by using the code at http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale9x/hotel-info when registering either on-line or by phone.

Also, the Open Source Software In Eduction (OSSIE) track at SCALE, providing an outstanding lineup of speakers connecting FOSS and its use in the scholastic realm, has been finalized.

Unlike in years past when OSSIE was held on Friday, this year OSSIE will be held on Saturday so educators may attend without missing classes.

The OSSIE schedule for Saturday's sessions can be found at https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale9x/special-events/open-source-software-education and tickets for OSSIE, which includes admission to the Exhibit Hall, are $15.

Students and teachers are eligible for a 50 percent discount on the SCALE 9X Full Access Pass – which will allow you to attend other sessions and visit the Exhibit Hall -- by using the STDNT promotional code when purchasing their ticket. If you’re an educator or student attending SCALE and using this promotion, don’t forget to bring a valid school ID with you and present it at SCALE check-in.

To attend OSSIE or to purchase one of two other ticket plans, register on the website at https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/reg7/

If not, consider attending SCALE! We can help you come up to speed on how to get over the “address space” speed bump gracefully, with two presentations on IPv6:

* Richard Jimmerson, Chief Information Officer of the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), will speak on “Ready or Not, IPv6 is Here: Preparing Your Linux Networks for IPv6”.

* Owen DeLong is an IPv6 Evangelist at Hurricane Electric and a member of the ARIN Advisory Council, and will present “IPv6 Basics for Linux Administrators”

The 9th Annual Southern California Linux Expo is less than four weeks away. This Expo is shaping up to be the best SCALE ever, with five tracks of quality presenters, over 80 exhibitors, and more content than it’s ever had.

The theme for SCALE 9X is “Open Source: Rising to New Heights”. Both the program and the SCALE 9x t-shirt promote this theme. You can check them both out at the SCALE 9x event page on Facebook. This year’s t-shirt will be a collector’s item!

Traditionally, above and beyond the presentation tracks and expo floor SCALE provides space for Free and Open Source Software organizations to meet. It’s one way we give back to the FOSS community. This year there are more of these great activities at SCALE than ever. Here’s the current (but expected to grow) list:

-Build an Open Source Cloud Day
-DevOps Day Los Angeles
-FOSS Mentoring
-Fedora Activity Day
-LPI Testing
-Los Angeles PostgreSQL Day
-Open Source Software In Education
-PGP Keysigning Party
-SCALE University
-openSUSE Day

The SCALE schedule is online now at http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale9x/schedule. While it’s always subject to change, it’s essentially complete. Check out the great presentations that will be given over the course of the three-day event!

The block of hotel rooms allocated for SCALE attendees at the Hilton is going fast; if you plan on staying overnight, don’t wait too long to make your reservations!

There are only a few slots left at SCALE’s version of lightning talks, our “UpSCALE” event. If you’re contemplating presenting send your proposal to gareth-+lTk9Ns4B/5zigNL44B2PR2eb7JE58TQ< at >public.gmane.org

There’s tons to see and do at SCALE. Register now and join us!

Keynote speakers finalized: Jane Silber joins Leigh Honeywell as the 2011 SCALE 9X keynoters

LOS ANGELES -- Canonical Chief Executive Officer Jane Silber has been added as a keynote speaker, with Leigh Honeywell, for the Southern California Linux Expo SCALE 9X in February.

Silber will give her keynote on "Cloud for Human Beings" during SCALE 9x, which runs from Feb. 25-27 in Los Angeles.

"We're fortunate and honored to have a speaker of Jane Silber's caliber joining Leigh Honeywell as the keynote speakers for SCALE this year," said, Ilan Rabinovitch, the chairperson for SCALE 9X. "These two outstanding speakers lead an impressive roster of people presenting at SCALE this year."

Silber started her career as a software developer and has continued to rely on that foundation in her years of business development, strategy, operations and product development experience. She served as Canonical's Chief Operating Officer from its founding and became its CEO last year.

Her work at Canonical has included leading the Ubuntu One project and ensuring that large organizations find Ubuntu "enterprise-ready."

Honeywell, co-founder and current president of HackLab TO in Toronto, will speak on "Hackerspaces and Free Software" in her keynote.

Traditionally, one keynote is given on Saturday and the other on Sunday. The order in which the two keynotes will take place has yet to be determined, and an announcement will be forthcoming once it is decided.

There are 64 speakers joining Honeywell and Silber in giving
presentations at SCALE. Among the presenters are OpenSUSE's Alan Clark, speaking on the topic "Create appliances with your own customized Linux OS;" PostgreSQL's Josh Berkus, speaking on "The Elephant Scales Out;" Cfengine's Mark Burgess, speaking on "The Future of Open Source Configuration Management;" and Meego advocate Quim Gil, who will speak
on "The Foundations of the Meego Project."

Sharpen those No. 2 pencils: One month remaining in the SCALE 9x Call for Papers

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 4, 2010) – In an effort to continue our efforts to promote and educate the public on Free/Open Source Software projects, the Southern California Linux Expo SCALE 9x invites you to share your work with the rest of the FOSS community by submitting a talk for the first-of-the-year Linux expo.

“As the first major Linux event of the year, SCALE 9x gives speakers an opportunity to set the tone for what’s ahead in the coming year,” said Shyam Kapadia, the chair of the SCALE 9x Speakers Committee. “For developers and those who advocate FOSS, it can serve as a springboard for further success as the year progresses.”

The deadline for the SCALE 9x Call for Papers is a little over a month away, on Dec. 13, with notification of acceptance being sent to speakers by Dec. 27.

Considering the rapid rise in the adoption of open source in the last few years, SCALE 9x encourages proposals directed toward open source success stories, open source expansion into different markets and fields, as well as novel applications.

Expanding on the success of the previous years, SCALE 9x will have five speaker tracks, including two specialized tracks, (the beginners' track and the developers' track) and a new system administration track catered toward the growing population of attendees interested in using open source alternatives for system administration tasks. The remaining two speaker tracks fall under a general category that will accommodate talks across a wide spectrum of interests and skill levels.

Some topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

SCALE ANNOUNCEMENT: Call for Papers for Southern California Linux Expo 9x opens September 1st

LOS ANGELES – Organizers of the Southern California Linux Expo 9x have announced that the Call for Papers for SCALE 9x opens Wednesday, Sept. 1, with five speaker tracks.

With the continued growth of Open Source software in business, SCALE will address the need for system management knowledge by adding a speaker track focused on system administration. Combined with the two specialized tracks -- Beginners and Developers -- and the two general interest tracks, SCALE 9x will have content for every attendee.

“With a larger show and more opportunities for speakers, we’re looking for a cross-section of speakers that will coincide with the wide range of attendees expected for SCALE 9X,” said Shyam Kapadia, who chairs the SCALE speakers committee.

Proposal abstracts are reviewed by a committee and are evaluated solely on merit. The closing date for the call for papers is Dec. 13, 2010, and organizers ask that the submission dates be strictly honored in order to provide the committee enough time to choose the best proposals.

SCALE 9X will also host tutorial sessions under a separate track. Those submitting presentations are asked to mention if the presentation is appropriate for a lab in the proposal.
Technical set up – including a microphone, overhead projector and a laptop running Linux – can be available, but presentations must be done in a non-proprietary format.

For more information on submitting a paper, visit http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale9x/blog/scale-9x-call-papers

SCALE 9X runs from Feb. 25-27, 2011, at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport hotel. For more information on SCALE 9X, visit http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale9x/

SCALE UPDATE: SCALE moves to larger venue starting in 2011

LOS ANGELES – In order to accommodate its steady growth over the past few years, the Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE) will move to its new home, the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, starting with SCALE 9X in 2011.

The new venue – larger than SCALE’s former home for the last four years at the Westin Los Angeles Airport – will allow SCALE to expand its offerings at SCALE 9X, slated for Feb. 18-20, 2011.

“We are excited about our new home at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport hotel, and the opportunities it allows us to pursue,” said SCALE chairman Ilan Rabinovitch. “The larger venue will allow SCALE to provide more co-hosted community events and conference activities over the next few years.”

In addition to the larger floor space for the expo, the Hilton has larger speaker rooms to allow more participants per specialty conference track. The Hilton also has more rooms than the Westin, so SCALE’s new home can more easily accommodate out-of-town attendees spending the weekend at the expo.

While the event is moving to a nearby facility, Rabinovitch said that he and the SCALE staff are grateful for the hospitality and services the Westin provided over the years.

“The toughest part about leaving the Westin was the relationships we had built with the people there. The Westin had become like a second home, and their staff were true partners in making SCALE a success,” Rabinovitch said. “The move to the Hilton was entirely based on cost and space availability.”

SCALE RECAP: SCALE 8X a unparallelled success; don't forget

SCALE UPDATE: SCALE a huge success, and don’t forget to take the speaker survey

A HUGE SUCCESS: With attendance up over 10 percent from last year, organizers of the Southern California Linux Expo SCALE 8X contend that the event this year was an unparalleled success.

The spike in the number of attendees to the first-of-the-year Linux show caused most of the weekend’s sessions and talks to be full, and in some cases – as in the Saturday keynote – there was overflow into other rooms where the talks were simulcast.

The expo floor was packed during the course of the event as well, with many vendors pleased – and in some cases overwhelmed – by the number of people attending SCALE 8X.

Both the attendance and the number of new people drawn to the event serves as a testament to the robust health of Free/Open Source Software in today’s economy, and the forecast is bright for an increase in both the popularity and necessity of FOSS throughout our digital dealings on a personal and professional level.

Photos of the event can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=scale8x&m=tags

Webcasts for keynotes and UpSCALE talks can be found here: http://www.ustream.tv/discovery/live/all?q=scale+8x

[Note: Audio for other talks from SCALE 8X will be forthcoming and the final update for SCALE 8X will feature the link.]

SPEAKER SURVEY: SCALE 8X staff asks that if you attended the event this year and went to some of the sessions, please fill out the speaker survey. The survey assesses the speakers’ as well as monitors attendance for each topic, giving organizers a barometer regarding the interest in a particular topic or subject. It also provides a blueprint for what to provide in the event next year.

The survey is located at https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/speaker_survey/
