Proposal: Shut down this mailing list

Hi! I'm a moderator of this mailing list and I propose that we shut it down.

The traffic has been very light for several years and we don't get any questions or discussions about the implementation of XML-RPC any more (which is the real purpose of the list).

We get the odd question about deployment of XML-RPC services and these would be better handled if they were directed at implementation specific lists.

If there is no strong objection I would prepose to shut the list down at the end of this month (March)

XML-RPC problem with jetty9

Welcome

i have servlet and web.xml (show below) and i use jetty container to run it . but when i run jetty server dont read my project.

how can i solve this problem ?

servlet is ExampleService.java

//package example;

import java.util.Random;
import java.util.HashMap;
import javax.servlet.ServletConfig;
import javax.servlet.ServletException;
import redstone.xmlrpc.XmlRpcServlet;

public class ExampleService extends XmlRpcServlet
{
public void init( ServletConfig servletConfig ) throws ServletException
{
super.init( servletConfig );

getXmlRpcServer().addInvocationHandler( "SimpleDatabase", new HashMap() );
getXmlRpcServer().addInvocationHandler( "RandomNumberGenerator", new Random() );
}
}

and the web.xml is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<web-app>

<!-- To save as "hello\WEB-INF\web.xml" -->
<servlet>
<servlet-name>ExampleService</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>ExampleService</servlet-class>
<init-param>
<param-name>streamMessages</param-name>
<param-value>1</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param> <!-- Optional! Defaults to text/xml and ISO-8859-1 -->
<param-name>contentType</param-name>
<param-value>text/xml; charset=ISO-8859-1</param-value>
</init-param>
<load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>ExampleService</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/redstone</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>

</web-app>

and the response from jetty server is:

I am trying to run a java client server code using xml-rpc on eclipse. I
have followed the link
http://www.tutorialspoint.com/xml-rpc/xml_rpc_examples.htm
<http://www.tutorialspoint.com/xml-rpc/xml_rpc_examples.htm>   for the
code.I have included 2 jar files (xmlrpc.jar and commons-codec.jar) in
the project.When I run the project, it gives the error "JavaClient:
java.io.FileNotFoundException: http://localhost/RPC2".
Plz help me solve this problem. Do I have to include any other jar file?

Thanks to (mostly Bryan) useful, accurate and informative help from this list, I have got my head around using RPC::XML::Client to interrogate an existing XML-RPC server.

Now I understand the concept, I would like to set up my own Server to talk to. And once again, I am baffled.

I have access to a web server running Apache. I understand (pretty much) how Apache listens for requests and serves up pages. In this case, all the web sites are aliased.

But I can't see how to hook-up RPC::XML::Server into this set up.

This really is basic stuff, but the existing documentation (and there is a decent amount of it) really is an aide memoire for those already in the know. And I am not one of them.

Could someone care to replay with a short tutorial on what I should do to get my web server to respond to client XML-RPC request? As ever, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

    </param>

Now,

use RPC::XML::Client;
my $client = RPC::XML::Client->new('http://path-to-rpc-server:19000');
my $res = $client->send_request('Gateway.SendMessage');

seems (I hope) clear enough, but I can't for the life of me understand how to get the Service,Password,Text etc parameters across.

Please, please can anyone help?

Since I am coming across more and more API's written this way, it feels natural to take their expected XML input and translate it into what RPC::XML can work with. But I can't find any examples that display this sort of thinking. Am I really coming at this backwards?

What is the Group's opinion on this? That is, how should I approach the task of connecting to API's such as this?

Once I am up and running on this, I intend to set up my own XML-RPC server for testing and upskilling myself. I think I will be wanting some help then!

Thanks

Bill

I saw an example of using apache+mod_python to be the XMLRPC server.
And one line of the config file is as follows:
Alias /test "/var/www/html/python/XMLRPC"

The /test will be mapped to /var/www/html/python/xmlrpchandler.py

What the means of XMLRPC in the "/var/www/html/python/XMLRPC" config file?

THanks.

Help with a POST with an XMLRPC call.

Hello everybody.

First, I must apollogize for the very novice basic newbie nature of my
question. I'm currently trying to generate RPC calls from a web page.
And started with a (supposedly) simple HTML exercise I found in the web.
This piece of code:

     <form
      method="post"
      action="http://betty.userland.com/RPC2
<http://betty.userland.com/RPC2> ">
      text:<input type="Type your command here" size =900 name="name">
           <input type=submit value="Press button">
     </form>

And I'm typing this XML code in the text input box:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<methodCall><methodName>examples.getStateName</methodName><params><param\

The exercise says it should give me back the name of the State. However,
all I have gotten is this response from the server:
   <?xml version="1.0" ?>   - <http://betty.userland.com/RPC2#>
<methodResponse>   - <http://betty.userland.com/RPC2#>  <fault>   -
<http://betty.userland.com/RPC2#>  <value>   -
<http://betty.userland.com/RPC2#>  <struct>   -
<http://betty.userland.com/RPC2#>  <member>     <name>faultCode</name>
- <http://betty.userland.com/RPC2#>  <value>     <int>6</int>
</value>   </member>  - <http://betty.userland.com/RPC2#>  <member>
<name>faultString</name>   - <http://betty.userland.com/RPC2#>  <value>
<string>Poorly formed XML text, it must end with a </tag>. (At character
#232.)</string>    </value>   </member>   </struct>   </value>
</fault> </methodResponse> I know the problem is with the syntax (at
least it says so), but I really can´t figure out what's wrong with
the semantic of the command. I have already read the online XML RPC
tutorials and still can't find out what am I doing wrong. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.   Thanks!

Because there is no order defined for paramters for the method, when there are more than one parameters required by the invocation, which one of the same type, e.g. int, the only way to let the peer, rpc request processor, know the differences among these parameters is to put the scale type parameter under the "hood" of struct type.

Thus the struct type behaves just as a collection of named scale types or array types parameters.

I tried to implement the rpc-xml parser and internally I tried to use a tree-like structure, however sometime which seems not efficeint for searching a node/leave without name. Is there any better way to make it?

Thanks a lot!

Greetings all,

Can anyone shed light on how signatures should be used in RPC::XML::Server?

The documentation is fairly vague...

=====

http://search.cpan.org/~rjray/RPC-XML-0.74/lib/RPC/XML/Server.pm#Methods

signature

    A list reference of the signatures by which this routine may be invoked. Every method has at least one signature. Though less efficient for cases of exactly one signature, a list reference is always used for sake of consistency.

=====

What are the valid values for the signature field, and what do they represent?

Below is an example where you can see the signature field in action... what you see are the fields include things like "array", "array string", "array array"...Is there a finite set of values for these fields, and if so, what are they?

# This is an example program from Programming Web Services with Perl,
# by Randy Ray and Pavel Kulchenko

use strict;
use warnings;

use XRFortune;
use RPC::XML::Server;

# The object created by the constructor will be used to
# chain on a set of calls to add_proc() (which means it
# isn't necessary to deal with the local routines being
# called as methods), and then drop directly into the
# server_loop() method.

RPC::XML::Server->new(port => 31135)
    # add_proc can take a pre-created RPC::XML::Procedure
    # object, or a hash reference.
    # It gets called once for each routine being made
    # public by the server.
    ->add_proc({ name => 'fortune',
                 signature => [ 'array',
                                'array string',
                                'array array' ],
                 code => \&XRFortune::fortune })

# This method will only return after a signal interrupts
    # it.
    ->server_loop;

exit;

Thanks!
Ted
