2008 Daytona Classic National

The 2008 Daytona Classic National is now history. The Big Formula cars play nicer with their smaller cousins than the Spec Wrecker Fords. The only metal to metal of the weekend was and Atlantic and a FE got together in the kink in the infield during the first qualifying session, which caused a 10 minute Black Flag All. Both cars were repaired and were able to race on Sunday. The were eight F500's registered, however Jeff Moench wasn't able to get his car ready with the crush of paying business and family commitments. The F500 Pole was secured by Bob Berman with a lap of 2:09.167 over Jim Elder with a 2:09.363. The rest of the F500 qualified in the Teens and beyond. The race was won by Bob Berman, with Jim Elder 2nd, Chris Hite 3rd, Chuck McAbee 4th, Tommy Manalio 5h, Derek Lieb 6th, and Wayde Alfarone a DNF. Wayde had been experiencing exhaust manifold issues all weekend. The Weather Steward cooperated with clear days with temperatures in the low to mid 80's. Additionally thanks to the events scheduling all the National events were concluded prior to lunch leaving the after lunch time to the Enduro crowd. It was not having to wait around this year for the Enduros to be given preference over the National competitors in track time. It was also great not to be hassled by Daytona Security to get loaded up an leave the track after being the last race of the event. The 30th Tom Nehl National was held at Roebling Road Raceway outside Savannah, GA on the March 1-2 Weekend. Entry from all classes was down with only 137 registered. On top of the thin registration, there were additional no shows. The Registered 14 car grouping of F500-FF-FV was reduced to 11 when Clint McMahan and two of the 3 Fords were not able to attend. After the first practice session on Saturday morning the field was shrunk to 10 as Tom Manalio had engine problems that could not be fixed at the track. The Weather Steward performed his duties flawlessly! While the morning were cool, in the 40's, once the Sun arrived the temps improved to the upper 60's to low 70's. Very comfortable racing. The race was flagged off at approximately 10 AM with the lone Ford checking out. Wayde Alfarone and I were the lone F500's with me qualified on the pole. At the drop of the flag we both checked out from the FV field and for 19 laps Wayde filled my mirrors at nearly every turn until I had a heim joint break in the front suspension causing me to have a snap spin on the short chute between turns 4 & 5. That was the race as Wayde Alfarone won his initial National Race. Congratulations Wayde. End of an era - F500 mailing list

Now that the F500 community has pretty much comfortably settled in it's new home - the eformulacarnews.com forums, the old f500.org mailing list is nearly silent. Last moth 98% of the posts were just spam (which of course got filtered fro the list - I was the only one who had to wade though them all). Also, as most of you know the f500.org site has been badly broken for some time now. It was attacked by hackers a few months ago and I've never really had the time to fix everything. On top of it all, the server that hosts f500.org is getting pretty old and really needs to be retired or replaced. So, with a bit of sadness I need to announce the end of the F500 mailing list. The list will go silent sometime in the next couple weeks. The website will be rehosted on a shared server, but in a considerably trimmed down form. Since there has been very, very little contributed content over the years, and I no longer have the time to author content myself, it makes little sense to keep maintaining news, product reviews, etc. Classifieds are handled by the forums now, so they will be gone as well. I will get the photo gallery back online on the new server. The server transition will take few weeks. I will retain the F500.org Mailing List Archives (and actually fix them so they are searchable again) on the new site. I do want to thank all the people who have made the f500 mailing list a fun place to hang out. I've enjoyed hosting it and do feel a bit sad to pull the plug. Homestead National(s)

The 40th Annual Florida Region Winter National was held at Homestead-Miami Speedway the weekend of January 11-13. The new twist to the event this year was that it was a Double sanctioned event. Two races for the price of one tow. The race group this weekend was F500-FF-FV. The grid for the F500 field was that same entrants as at Sebring the prior weekend. The Dolphin Motorsports stable consisted of Bob Berman and Jim Elder. Sidewinder was represented by Chris Hite. Jack Walbran had is Scorpion in from St.Louis, and yours truly with the ex Dolphin Motorsports QRE Invader. Chris was the lone Rotax 494 entered, the rest having Rotax 493's. The Saturday race was grided with Bob and Jim well into the FF segment of the field with Bob girded 3rd overall. The rest of the F500 field was grided between the Fords and the Vee's. At the start Chris pulled a banzi outside move and was 3rd F500 into turn 2, however, Chris did not have the straight line speed to hold the position and was 5th F500 at the completion of the 1st lap. Yours truly held 3rd position with mirrors filled with Red Scorpion at every opportunity until the overtaking of the FV's began when I caught the Vee's 'right' and Jack caught the Vee's wrong and the gap opened to a 'comfortable' margin of 2 to 3 seconds and was held to the finish...Finish Order 1. Bob Berman 2. Jim Elder 3. Chuck McAbee 4. Jack Walbran 5. Chris Hite The Sunday race had virtually the same grid locations for the F500's, however, in the Saturday Race Chris Hite had the Engine-Clutch driveshaft break. and without a spare Chris packed up Saturday afternoon and towed home. The race was uneventful until midway on the leaders 14th lap when Jack Walbran and I came together under braking in Turn 5, unfortunately them bumping caused the drive chain on Jack's Scorpion to be thrown off the sprocket and Jack retired at the edge of the track at the exit of Turn 5 bringing out a Full Course Yellow to remove Jack's car from a dangerous location. On the re-start, all HE double hockey sticks broke out in the FV area of the field and 1st and 2nd Vee's took each other out and caused the race to get an early Checker after only 18 laps. The finish order was - 1. Bob Berman 2. Jim Elder 3. Chuck McAbee 4. Jack Walbran. The Southeast Division has now completed 3 National events and it's not even the middle of January. Sebring National

The 2008 version of the Sebring Winter Nationals was held Jan. 6, 2008 on the Sebring Long Course (used by the Sebring 12 Hour event), with temperatures in the low 70's with light puffy clouds drifting across the sky. The F500's were in a race group that included, DSR, FF and FV. As you would expect DSR's filled the first 6 places on the grid. The some intermixed DSR & FF's down to the F500 Pole Sitter Bob Berman in 15th with a 2:19.732 compared to the Pole Sitting DSR with a 2:01.551. The rest of the F500 field was Jim Elder in 16th, Jack Walbran in 25th, Chuck McAbee in 26th and Chris Hite in 28th. The race was flagged off as the last race before the lunch brake and, as opposed to several years ago, the start was uneventful with the entire field making it past the starters stand and through Turn 1 (which is still as rough as ever). On Lap 2 Jim Elder reported he spun at the Safety Pin and had to wait for a number of cars to pass before rejoining the race, by which time he had lost all contact with Bob Berman. Meanwhile further back in the field the other 3 F500's were having a real race....with multiple passes for position on a number of laps. By the time the Checker flew the finish order was Bob Berman, Jim Elder, Chris Hite, Jack Walbran and yours truly bring up the 5th position after a momentary loss of concentration caused by an overtaking FF caused me to miss a braking point and go agricultural on the penultimate lap giving, Chris and Jack separation that I could not regain. All in all .... a successful start to the F500 season, as no cars broke and all will be able to compete at the Homestead Double National next weekend.
