Ready for translation: Tech Ambassadors & Tech Newspages

<pre>Greetings fellow translators,

You may have seen recent changes on the Tech Ambassadors and Tech News
pages on meta.

I've tried to make them prettier, but more importantly simpler and
easier to use for contributors.

I think it's important that these pages be available in multiple
languages, in order to empower Wikimedians from all languages to stay
informed about technical changes, and have a voice in the software
development process.

This is why I've prepared the translation process for those two pages.
In order to check that everything was working properly, and that it
was easy enough to translate, I've translated one page into French,
and the other one is half done as well.

I'd like to ask for your help to start translations into other languages:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/News
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/Ambassadors

Your help is deeply appreciated. If you encounter issues or have
questions or comments, I'm happy to help as much as I can. Please feel
free to ask here or on meta.

Thanks again,

Help needed to translate page about Flow, the new discussion system

<pre>Greetings fellow translators,

The designers at the Wikimedia Foundation have started to work on a
new discussion system (called "Flow") to improve talk pages.

Because talk pages are a very central point of every user's work, they
need your help to translate the project's description page, in order
to allow more people to know what it is about and how it will work.

This will allow more users, who don't necessarily understand English,
to participate in the design process.

The page is a bit long, but even if you translate a few paragraphs,
your help will be appreciated.

The page is at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Flow

Many thanks for your help. Let me know if you encounter issues, and
I'll be glad to try and answer your questions.

It would be really great to get the Single User Login finalisation
announcement[0] translated into as many languages as possible as it
potentially affects a large number of users in each language. There is the
original announcement[1], the specific user notification for users who will
be renamed[2], and the general[3] and directed[4] CentralNotices.

Many thanks!

Der Mundo, multilingual link sharing tool, looking for feedback on wikimedia idea

<pre>Hello,

I am the developer of Der Mundo, a multilingual link sharing tool that enables users to share links to any page in any language. Its part of a larger cross-language content discovery platform.

Its pretty simple. You give it a URL, it provides a shortcut URL to share. Whenever someone follows that link, the service detects each user's language preference and if translation is needed, auto-translates the page using the best available translation engine (we use several). Try it out at www.dermundo.com

I want to complement the machine translation with an option to wikify the machine translated texts. The process would go something like this.

1) convert the source web page to markdown and strip out superfluous texts as much as possible
2) insert machine translations beneath each source text
3) users can then edit or replace the machine translations from there

In the previous incarnation of the service, we emphasized human translation first, but found that because people were linking to content that aged rapidly, few items would be translated. With this version, we turn it around so that people can intervene if they want to, for example, if an article is a long form essay that deserves close attention. For many situations, machine translation is "good enough" though.

I'd like to talk with someone who's knowledgeable about the wikimedia platform to figure out how best to do this, what the hosting requirements are, and so forth. If you're interested, drop me a line, and if you like the idea behind Der Mundo, spread the word.

Thanks for your time.

Attached some links related to the subject and some links, which might useful with planning activities (of this kind) in Africa (the list was established for another purpose - but part of the links might be of interest)

I recently came across an article on co-working in the news and, while investigating into the matter, learned about your community and its activities on your website. In this context I would like to submit a proposition and share your opinion on the following matter:What about investing in a more adventurous site - further afield, in the "outback", (or even) in an emerging country, or whatever...The project could be "limited in size" (the size of a house instead of an office building), financed by a(n) (international) group of prospective users, to reduce the cost of the investment. It could be used in a way to somehow combine a kind of "holiday feeling" with business purposes, on a commercial or non-profit basis, depending on the location and the financial means of the investors..."Extremely exotic locations" might require additional investments in solar devices (for energy), pumps (for water), filters and chemicals (to clean the water), and similar...The local communities might benefit from the availability and / or the opportunity to use and get acquainted and familiar with modern technology, working techniques and media, and, in a certain way and to a certain extent "networking" (which might, among others, for example, be realised by suspending courses at the example of "Walldorf" schools in Germany)...... or positive effects on the activities of local communities... Be assured, that I would love to take part in a project of this kind, though unfortunately, due to given circumstances, it is not possible and certainly would not mind a feedback of any kind._______________________________________________

Now the outdated translations, marked by the !!FUZZY!! markers in

you used to see pink-coloured paragraphs, there's now the English text.
We have about 700 such translations on Meta, because some hard-working

very quick, and you'll restore readers with sometimes crucial pages in

You can see the pages that need updating LanguageStats for your

Der Mundo, multilingual link sharing, interested in collaborating on wiki translation tool

<pre>Hi everyone,

I am the founder of the Worldwide Lexicon project, a collaborative translation platform. We're beta testing a new multilingual link sharing tool at www.dermundo.com I am writing on two topics. First, I'd like to invite people to test Der Mundo, more info below. Second, I am interested in collaborating on a translation platform derived from the Media Wiki platform.

Der Mundo is a multilingual link sharing service that makes it easy to share links so that anyone can read them. You enter a URL, it gives you a short code which you can share. The system auto-detects each reader's preferred language, and redirects either to the original (no translation needed), or to the best translation service for that language (right now either Google or Microsoft, but we're adding language specific translation engines soon).

What I'd really like to offer is a wiki translation option so people can manually edit or rewrite the translations. We experimented with this in the past, but found that for most pages, machine translation is "good enough" for most people (i.e. its often full of errors, but they can get the gist, so its not worth the effort to rewrite). So what I'd like to do is to figure out a way to auto-translate a page, copy that onto a wiki page, which readers can edit further. I am not familiar with the internals of the Media Wiki platform, but I figured someone on this list might be.

In any case, feel free to try the link sharing tool. It has been localized into 18 languages, and can translate to/from languages supported by the major translation engines (about 60 or so altogether).

If you'd like to discuss or learn more, I can be reached at bsmcconnell&lt; at &gt;gmail.com

Thanks!

highest quality of translations used in our messaging.

To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us

So with our fundraising testing ticking over nicely and subtly, we want to
expand our new integrated landing page banner to more languages and
counties. If you wanna take look at what it looks like you can check it out
here:

If it doesnt show it means you've already seen it, try opening the link
using "private browsing/incognito" mode on your browser.

I was wondering if I could rustle up some translations for the following
languages:

* Hebrew - (link&lt;http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ATranslate&amp;taction=translate&amp;group=page-Fundraising+2012%2FTranslation%2FDrop+down+banner&amp;language=he&amp;limit=100&amp;task=view&gt;

Hopefully we can get these new banners will be up and running in these and

<pre>As you know, the WMF publishes a monthly and very thorough summary of
all the "development" activity on mediawiki.org and the WMF blog.
Since a few months, Guillaume is also writing a human-readable summary
which contains the few things every Wikimedia projects editor should
really know.
It would be very nice to have it translated in more languages, because
many (1000+/month) read it rather than the long version.

Nemo

P.s.: This would also help WMF's software development projects being
/slightly less/ anglo-centric, IMHO: this is the only way communities
have to give feedback on stuff before it's thrown on them irrecoverably.

Steward Election translations

<pre>Dear all,

The Steward Election for year 2013 will be open for voting in one week (starting from 8 Feb). I'd like to ask your assistance in translating the statements and information pages into your language, so more users will be able to read and participate in the election.

You may access the translation portal [1] to see how you can help.

Note that CentralNotice banners will be displayed globally during the election. Translations have already been recycled from last year. Nevertheless, to avoid any errors, please review the translations [2] as well, and translate them if it is not available in your language yet. (remember to change the status to 'ready' if you make any changes, so it can be updated into the banner system)

Thank you very much.

Drop down banner - Italian translations needed

<pre>Hey guys,

So I wanted to do two things, firstly a brief keeping you guys in the loop
on the state of the international fundraiser and what to expect over the
coming months.

As many of you may know from the metric's meetings and emails to the
wikimedia-l list last november, the plan is to shift from the big push
annual fundraiser to a more subtle, lower impact year round fundraiser.
This is going to be happening over the coming months and I am sure that
more details about how exactly this will happen will appear in time.

With regards to the international portion of the 12/13 fundraiser, we
intend to restart testing in the top ten languages in the coming weeks,
with the remainder of languages following later on. This means that you
will start seeing translation requests coming in somewhat regularly over
the coming months. Most of work that was done will still be used so nothing
has gone to waste but there is a greatly expanded thank you portion to the
fundraiser featuring numerous editors from all backgrounds that will
require alot of work.

We are going to aim to try and keep a torrent of notifications from being
sent out so some will be sent out in batches via a bot as well as through
this mailing list to at least reduce some of the annoyance.

If you have any questions feel free to ask here or email me.

The final thing I wanted to ask is I could really do with some
*Italian *translations
for this request:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ATranslate&amp;taction=translate&amp;group=page-Fundraising+2012%2FTranslation%2FDrop+down+banner&amp;language=it&amp;limit=100&amp;task=view

Italian is going to be the first of the big languages to undergo a big
testing phase.

Thank you :)
