Hi all,

The Manlug meeting for May 2012 is taking place on 12th May, due to work
and holidays I've had to move it slightly, details below:

Location: Madlab. (Manchester Digital Laboratory).
Address: 36-40 Edge Street, Manchester. M4 1HN. -- (Between Thomas
Street and the Craft Centre, opposite A Bar Called Common)"
Date: Saturday, 12th May 2012
Starts: 14:00
Approximate finish: 17:00

Summary:
This is the postponed talk from last month and will be given by my good
self, it will be an introduction to MRTG (Multi Router Traffic Grapher),
requirements, how to install and how to draw pretty graphs of devices on
your LAN etc. I always get a tad suspicious when I see the lights on my
router flashing away like it's Christmas, ohh and I like to know what is
going on, this is a good start. I would suspect most would find it
useful to see what their home router is seeing, it is capable of much more.

Please come along, bring your friends and relatives, please feel free to
cross post this far and wide.

PS, a voluntary contribution of £1 -- £2 per person would be highly
appreciated to assist our good friends at Madlab in their day to day
running costs.

---
Notes:

1/ Manlug.org has been updated as above

2/ And to keep up with the crowd < at >man_lug has been tweeted to/on?,
somebody already had < at >manlug :-(. I don't understand the whole twitter
thing personally.

## Coalition against Digital Restrictions Management ready to go for May
4th Day Against DRM

BOSTON, Massachusetts, USA -- Thursday, May 3, 2012 -- Defective by
Design will hold its annual International Day Against DRM
(<http://dayagainstdrm.org>) on Friday, May 4th, targeting the use of
Digital Restrictions Management on ebooks. Several other organizations
have joined to express their concern for the freedoms of authors and
readers, including Creative Commons, O'Reilly Media, No Starch Press,
the Accessible Computing Foundation, Libre Graphics Magazine, APRIL,
the Free Software Foundation and its sister organizations, FSF France
and FSF India.

Matt Lee, campaigns manager of Defective by Design, said, "DRM is a
growing problem in the area of ebooks, where people have had their
books restricted so they can't freely loan, re-sell or donate them,
read them without being tracked, or move them to a new device without
re-purchasing all of them. They've even had their ebooks deleted by
companies without their permission."

As part of the day, people fed up with DRM are holding protest and
awareness events in Cincinnati, Orlando, Amherst, San Francisco,
Boston, Madrid, Rome, Manchester, Nagoya (Japan), and Aveiro
(Portugal). More events are still being added at
<http://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:DefectiveByDesign/Day_Against_DRM_2012>.

Supporters are also taking action online, displaying the campaign's
banner and using the opportunity to blog about their frustrations with
DRM.

Notable science fiction author and editor of the influential
BoingBoing.net blog, Cory Doctorow said, "As an author, I understand
that DRM doesn't do squat to protect my interests. As a
businessperson, I understand that DRM usurps my commercial
relationships with my customers and hands them to DRM vendors."

Sanders Kleinfeld, author of *HTML5 for publishers* said in an
interview with O'Reilly Media, "What's disappointing right now is that
Amazon is very set on their Mobi format for their Kindle device, Apple
has made strides away from EPUB 3 with their latest iBooks 2.0 and
iBooks Author. I think vendors that make these devices are interested
in maintaining that lock-in for customers."

Defective by Design has held previous international days against DRM
in 2006, 2010 and 2011, focusing on use of DRM by Microsoft, Apple,
Amazon, and the RIAA. Defective by Design is a campaign of the Free
Software Foundation.

Information on how to participate can be found at
<http://dayagainstdrm.org>. Pictures, videos, and accounts will be
posted afterward at <http://defectivebydesign.org>.

tl;dr: Curry and beer, 7pm, Friday 4th May, Hardy's Well in Rusholme.

On Friday 4th May, a number of us from various geek groups will be going
out for a curry and some drinks. We'll be meeting in our usual venue of
Hardy's Well pub at the end of Rusholme from 7pm and moving on to a
nearby curry house after a drink or two - usually this means by 8pm at
the latest.

Everyone is welcome to attend, so please feel free to forward this email
to other lists and drop me an email off-list if you want a contact
number for the evening. If you haven't been before, it would be helpful
to know that you're coming so that we can keep a look out for you.

Hope to see you there!

Liverpool LUG meeting with Hakim Cassimally -Enchanted Objects: the Internet of Things for Humans -Wednesday 2nd May 2012

On Wednesday, 2nd May 2012, the Liverpool Linux User Group¹ will be
meeting. Hakim Cassimally² will be shedding light on the mysterious
concept of the Internet of Things³ in a talk entitled "Enchanted
Objects: the Internet of Things for Humans". In Hakim's words:

"In this talk, we'll look at bubbles, owls, bicycles, enchanted
objects, designing for humans, and open source frothy goodness!"

We will meet at the Liverpool Social Centre⁴ at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm
start. After the talk, we will venture to a local drinking
establishment for beverages and further discussion.

Liverpool Social Centre is next door to the News from Nowhere bookshop
on Bold Street⁵. To access the centre, press the bell for the
basement on the left of the door and someone will come up and let you
in.

This should be another illuminating, possibly even inspiring talk :-)

Hi everyone

Apologies for using the google group for this, but I think it could be of
interest to a wide range of organisers

We've held Young Rewired State [1] at MadLab for a week in August in 2010 &
2011. It's a weeklong "hack" for developers aged 18 and under - held in
August

It's a chance for developers aged under 18 to come together, build stuff
and show the world. Equally, it's also a great opportunity for the
communities around MadLab to work with young people.

In the past year, the success of YRS has also exploded out into a focus on
how IT is taught in our schools [2]

We're holding a short meeting at MadLab on* Monday 30th April* (4-6pm) to
gather support: http://lanyrd.com/2012/yrs-madlabuk-planning/

Could you volunteer to help during the week? Either by being there at some
point or even providing remote support (or even pizza!) is welcome.

Also - I'm keen this year that we help YRS'ers find out more about the
Madlab groups that take place during the year...

Thanks

Steven

Liverpool LUG meeting - Saturday 21st April 2012

On Saturday, 21st April 2012, the Liverpool Linux User Group¹ will be
meeting. This is a Saturday meeting so there's no talk.

Last month proceedings were distrupted somewhat by the presence of
bands practicing in Studio 2, even though we occupied a sound-proof
booth. This month, I thought we might try meeting at The Shipping
Forecast² on Slater Street³. And also at an earlier time, seeing as
they serve meals there.

So, the place to be is The Shipping Forecast at 12.30pm next Saturday.
As always, a fluffy Tux penguin toy will be on display because it's
cute and cool. Depending on the swiftness of the US Postal Service,
it may even be joined by a cute and cool fluffy GNU toy :-) In case
you need it, my mobile number is 0783 034 5001.

Cheers,

Bob

Hi all,

I'm extremely pleased to announce the Liberated Pixel Cup, a project
that brings together Creative Commons, the Free Software Foundation, and
OpenGameArt to run a gaming competition:

http://lpc.opengameart.org/

There will be a style guide written, and both a (CC BY-SA + GPL dual
licensed) game art authoring competition, and a game coding (GPL)
competition that uses those assets.

I'm extremely excited about the launch of this project, and hope you
are also! Please do spread the news!

More from Creative Commons' press release here:

Thanks!

Hi Michael,

I just wanted to let you know about the special rates for the upcoming
Web Design Foundations courses.

As you know MadLab is a not-for-profit organisation and we use
Omniversity to generate some income. We could always use help in
promoting the courses. It is especially important to us to fill as many
places as possible and we would like to offer special rates for the up
coming Web Design Foundations courses for the groups and their friends
and family. Instead of the regular £100 price for the session we would
give a 30% reduction and offer each two part session for £70. I think
creatives could really benefit from learning how to create their own
space on the web.

If you could spread that information around within the Manchester Free
Software, it would be very much appreciated.

There are three upcoming web design courses this spring:

Web Design Foundations 2: HTML Basics
23rd April and 30th April (6pm-9pm)
Web Design Foundations 3: CSS Basics
14th May and 21st May (6pm-9pm)
Web Design Foundations 4: Advanced CSS and HTML topics
11th June and 18th June (6pm-9pm)

People should not worry about missing the first session - we can share
the materials for catching up.

Maybe you could also remind the people in your group about the Geek
Vouchers. Geek vouchers are available for all the courses.

Many thanks!

Kaija-Luisa

Dear all,
the group tour has been closed now and although we did
not even reach 50% of the original goal, we will start anyways.

Thanks to some smaller and some generous donations we
will be able to "charter the plane" for making our tour. Even
if the seats are more expensive.

We already have ordered most of the components so
that production is planned to start after the easter weekend.

In the meantime we also have fixed most of the units from
the first production run so that our backlog for the "from stock"
orders and for the "GTA04 Complete" are almost delivered
or will be shipped tomorrow. With every unit we broaden our
base of developers and contributors.

So we had a very bumpy GTA04 start... But due to Radek's
work and numerous others, software is already quite mature
for daily use, which was a major barrier for such a device.

I think many of you are more interested in learning
and tweaking the software, so I know you are eagerly
waiting for shipment....

Thanks again to all those who did donations and all
participants of the group tour. Both are very important
to give the Openmoko idea a new chance into the future.

Nikolaus

Web Design Foundations is a four part modular course aimed at anyone
who wants to learn about how the Web works from the very basic
beginnings and be taken step by step, in a friendly informal style, up
to the point where they know how to build a basic modern best
practices web site and put it online. This includes a bit of theory,
but it largely focuses on getting your hands dirty with code (such as
HTML and CSS), and learning how it REALLY works.

Web Design Foundations 1(3) : Introduction to the Web, and web design
http://s.madlab.org.uk/wdf13

2nd April

This course starts you off at the very beginning, looking at
fundamental topics such as where the web came from, how it works, how
a web designer creates a web page and uploads it onto the web for
others to see, how to be a part of the web design community,
accessibility, usability, information architecture, and more. At the
end of the session, you will briefly dive into HTML and CSS, two of
the most important technologies used to build web pages.

Web Design Foundations 2(3) : HTML Basics
http://s.madlab.org.uk/wdf23

23rd April - 30th April

This course looks at the Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) language in
detail, showing how it is used to structure and define all the
different parts of your web content, such as headings, paragraphs,
lists, links, forms, tables, images and more. The focus is firmly on
making sure your content is presented using modern best practices,
making it logical, flexible and accessible and usable by the widest
variety of web users possible. The session also includes a look at
HTML5 semantics: the future of markup.

Web Design Foundations 3(3) : CSS Basics
http://s.madlab.org.uk/wdf33

14th May - 21st May

This course looks at looks at Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) in detail,
the language used to add styling and layout to your HTML content. In
this session you will learn fundamental CSS theory such as the box
model, the cascade and specificity, how to effectively style your
paragraphs, lists, tables, forms, navigation menus and other content,
and the basics of layouts using floats and positioning. This session

Web Design Foundations 4(3) : Advanced CSS and HTML topics
http://s.madlab.org.uk/wdf43

11th June-18th June

Advanced CSS and HTML topics takes HTML and CSS further, looking at
advanced topics such as multi-column layouts, cross-browser issues,
CSS sprites, faux columns, optimizing layouts for different devices
such as mobile phones, CSS3 transitions, transforms and animation,
HTML5 video and forms, and more.

Please spread the word!

We also have some flyers for Omniversity, MadLab, the venue hire at
MadLab that we would happy if you could take with you - especially if
you work at the universities or companies that might have interest
for those two subjects. If that is OK with you, I could send you the
pdfs, or we could also print some out at MadLab and you could take
them when you come by the next time.
That would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Kaija-Luisa
