<pre>Since NetBSD 5.2 has been released (and 6.0 seems to have troubles on mips)
I've built and put 5.2 based NetBSD/cobalt RestoreCD/USB images:

http://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD/arch/cobalt/restore-cd/5.2/

No visible functional changes in RestoreCD/USB script itself,
and only NetBSD binaries (and CHANGES file) are updated from
the previous 5.1.2 ones. See release announcements for 5.2 changes:
http://www.NetBSD.org/releases/formal-5/NetBSD-5.2.html

restorecd-5.2-20121208.iso.gz is a gzipped RestoreCD ISO9660 image.

restoreusb-5.2-20121208.img.gz is a gzipped RestoreUSB image
for &gt;=512MB USB memory sticks on USB bootable PCs.

You can write the image using gzip(1) + dd(1) on Unix like OSes,
or you can also use "Rawrite32" utility on MS Windows:
http://www.NetBSD.org/~martin/rawrite32/index.html

See also "Restore CD/USB Howto" for actual installation procedures:
http://www.NetBSD.org/ports/cobalt/restorecd-howto.html
and see files in .tar.gz archive for more details.

Diagnosing an unstable Qube2

<pre>Hi,

After some years running quite well, my Qube2 (NetBSD 5.1) started to lock up after a few days, with the serial console unresponsive.
Usage is regular postgresql building and testing, which is quite processor and memory intensive, backup via rsync.
I changed the power supply, but that did not solve the problem.

So I upgraded to NetBSD 6.0, and the machine is now really unstable:
lots of core dumps until the machine is unusable, tar telling that headers are invalid, then succeeding on the same file,

then errors like this:
sendmail: panic: myfree: corrupt or unallocated memory block
[1] Done /bin/sh /etc/dai... |
     Done tee /var/log/dai... |
Abort trap (core dumped) sendmail -t

How do I go about diagnosing what is the problem ?
Are there memory tests, disk tests that I could run ?

Thanks for your help, I would be sad to have to decommission this little machine :-)

I've got 2 Qube2 boxes I'm getting rid of. One has 64MB RAM &amp; 20GB
HD. The other has 128MB &amp; 12GB HD.

If you come and get them (Sebastopol, ~1 hour north of San Francisco,
CA) or meet me somewhere (I'm in Santa Rosa fairly often, and going to
ESC/Design West in San Jose this coming Wednesday).

If you want me to ship them, I'll charge cost of shipping plus $20 for
my time. That $20 will cover the "handling" for both if you want them
both.

Thanks,

Robert

Cobalt RestoreCD/RestoreUSB Beta based on NetBSD 5.1.1

<pre>Hi,

It seems NetBSD 5.1.1 release is pending, but binaries are there
and it also contains telnetd vulnerability fix (which is rather
important for restorecd), so I'd announce 5.1.1 based NetBSD/cobalt
RestoreCD and brandnew RestoreUSB as Beta test for future 5.1.x release:

http://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD/arch/cobalt/restore-cd/5.1.1/

restorecd-5.1.1-20120112.iso.gz is a gzipped RestoreCD ISO9660 image
as prior releases.

restoreusb-5.1.1-20120112.img.gz is a new "RestoreUSB" image
which has almost identical functions with RestoreCD but is
intended to be burned into USB memory sticks for USB bootable PCs.

You can write the image using gzip(1) + dd(1) on Unix like OSes,
or you can also use "Rawrite32" utility on MS Windows:
http://www.NetBSD.org/~martin/rawrite32/index.html

To use the RestoreUSB for cobalt installation, write the image
into &gt;=512MB USB memory stick (or USB HDD etc.) and boot your PC
from it, then all other procedures are same as RestoreCD.
You no longer have to burn a coaster for every installation ;-)

See also "Restore CD Howto" for actual installation procedures:
http://www.NetBSD.org/ports/cobalt/restorecd-howto.htm:
(though RestoreUSB is not mentioned yet)
and see files in .tar.gz archive for more details.

I have a qube2 with 128mb of ram. I just purchased another 128mb from a reputable source, supposedly taken from and tested with a Qube2. When I install the ram in my Qube2, the system will not boot.

I am sure I read that the qube2 can take 256mb of ram but can anyone confirm?

I am guessing the memory is faulty, and will have to send it back.

<pre>I know this is slightly OT but you folks are cobalt experts, and I need a second opinion...

I hooked up a IDE to SATA adapter to my Qube2 with a SATA SSD and did a 5.1 restore successfully.

I logged in as root after it rebooted fiorst time over and it was fine, I started SSHd and tested
that and it was a-ok. I shutdown the system and tied down some wires in side and secured the SSD with
a pad of insulating 2-sided silicon gel tape.

When it rebooted it locked up during the boot process hard. Nothing worked. No serial console
response.

I turned it off after 10 mins and on and it wouldn't even start up. All I get is a line of
black squares on the top row of the LCD.

I've stripped it right back to bare bones and it won't work. I even swapped the RAM (which had
been working 100% in service for years) but no dice.

I guess it's dead?

5.1 Restore - can't telnet?

<pre>Hi. I just did a NetBSD 5.1 Restore on my Qube2 (which I just built a new power supply and power plug for).

Restore went great - VERY smooth operation - really nice to be able to just 'do' it with no serial terminal etc.

I changed the IP, netmask, default route to match my LAN once I had it hooked up using the panel (I prefer a fixed IP).

That went fine, I can now ping the Qube2 from another box.

$ ping 192.168.1.103

round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.472/0.581/0.704/0.095 ms

All good.

I can't telnet to the box to continue my setup/secure the box though?

$ telnet -l root 192.168.1.103
Trying 192.168.1.103...

Connection closed by foreign host.

That's what I get back. I'm guessing I need to telnet as root? I can't remember how to do it. I thought -l root would map 'root' as the user but I might be wrong?

This isn't documented anywhere I can find it. The RestoreCD HowTo gives the impression it should 'just work' which it does... but...

Oh also, when I serial console the box I get a db&gt; (debugger?) prompt not a login? What gives? That used to work :\
