Hi everyone,

I just formalised our FixedMisc [MirOS] font into a release.
Belatedly, I probably had better called it FixedMir, but… what the hey.


Those running MirBSD-current will not have to do anything:

Those running Debian (wheezy and up; may work with older
versions or derivates) can install this binary package,
which will just replace all (except cyrillic, 75dpi and
100dpi) X11 fonts with those from our XFree86® (after I
merged the fixes from X.org in):

There’s an accompanying package enabling 9x18 fixed-misc
on the Linux framebuffer console and providing more line

Please note that, to be able to select FixedMisc [MirOS]
in GUI applications such as Kontact/KDEPIM, you’ll need to
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow fontconfig-config
and when asked “Enable bitmapped fonts by default?” select Yes.


Those on other operating environments can download the standard
form for distribution and modification of an X11 bitmap font,
the BDF format, of our FixedMisc [MirOS] font, from here:

It’s likely that Gentoo will soon have an ebuild for that.

It’s highly recommended to use one of our ~/.Xresources files:

These also contain proper settings for colours, not using a bold
variant for bright colours, fixing up character classes, backspace,
define the cursor shape, encoding and more.

Once past the fontconfig hurdle, -fa FixedMisc will also work;
fullwidth characters are, in both (BDF and fontconfig) cases
available depending on the goodwill of the program and libraries.

You’ll notice “FixedMir” by the unique shapes of the uppercase
Eszett ẞ and the slashed zero; to let bdfctool(1) speak:

To distinguish “FixedMir” from earlier MirOS fixed-misc flavours,
consider the following characters:
• U+3013 〓 – if it looks like an equals sign = you have the old one,
  if it’s much thicker, you have -ja- or the new one
• U+FFE3 ￣ – if it’s a tilde you’re wrong, otherwise -ja- or new one
• U+FFE4 ￤ – if it’s a broken bar you have -ko- or the new one
• U+2A27 ⨧ should be a + with a subscript digit two
• U+209C ₜ should be a subscript lowercase letter t


To install a .bdf font:
• optionally compile it into .pcf (machine dependent) and compress:
  bdftopcf -t mirf18hw.bdf | gzip -n9 >mirf18hw.pcf.gz
  bdftopcf -t mirf18fw.bdf | gzip -n9 >mirf18fw.pcf.gz
• copy into a directory in the font path, e.g.
  XF86: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/ (or misc/ which the OS uses)
  xorg: /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/
• run mkfontdir on that directory (handled by postinst in the .deb)
• run fc-cache on that directory (handled by a trigger in the .deb)
Or look how your OS vendor usually handles such things.
