Cygwin X Windows (xterm) and VirtuaWin: How to fix the refresh problem when switching virtual desktops

<pre>Hi all

in short:
To make VirtuaWin refresh windows correctly when switching desktops,
generate a window rule that uses "Hide by move" for the X windows.

in more detail:
Several people like virtual desktops. On Windows, they can be
provided by a tool called VirtuaWin. However, together with
Cygwin XServer there are issues with refreshing the X windows
when switching desktops. I was annoyed for this known issue since
years and every now and then I looked to the internet checking if
a solution appeared. Interestingly such a solution exists [1]
since years (2009) but I did not find it before - now I am so
happy!

As this had be questioned on this list but as far as I see
without presenting the solution, I decided to write this mail.

To make VirtuaWin refresh windows correctly when switching
desktops, generate a window rule that uses "Hide by move" for X
windows. This can be done by clicking with the middle mouse
button on the title bar of an Cygwin X Windows window, such as an
xterm, and select "Add Window Rule". In the dialog near bottom
there is "Method for hiding the window", change it to "Hide by
move window". Do not forget to press "Add" and "Apply" buttons
afterwards.

With middle-click titlebar and selecting "Info" it can be
verified that instead of "Handling: Standard,Standard" now there
should be "Handling Move,....".

Please note that this might not instantly work for currently
opened windows or windows on another desktop. Re-apply the rule
on other desktops might help, a forum post [2] suggests rebooting
(well, it's Windows).

So just in case someone else lives with the same issue, I hope it
helped that I repeated (copied) the solution [1] here.

Regards,
Steffen

<pre>Hello,

I have the latest cygwin X server installed on my Win 7 laptop.
I use it to get to get my Linux apps displayed on my laptop.
It used to work all fine, but now for some reason, I get "no protocol specified" error when launching an app on Linux.
(DISPLAY is correctly configured, xhost is correctly called, and it used to work fine) I have discovered now that when my PC has another ip address it does work correctly. (When I vpn to work). Although it used to work before regardless the IP address of the laptop

Anybody any idea? Maybe some hidden lock file from a previous session that is not deleted?

Thanks

<pre>I just installed cygwin/X + Xming + a number of packages (X11, gcc, grace, xclock, xeyes, etc.). I also added "C:\cygwin\bin" to the path. Most things seem to work fine. For example, I can open xterm, xclock, xeyes and run gcc in the cygwin window.
However, grace doesn't load. This is what I get:

I'm guessing that there's a simple solution that has to do with a definition somewhere, but couldn't figure it out... Any suggestions? Thanks! </pre>

struggling with xauth vs xhost

<pre>While in the process of moving from a commercial X server to the
cygwin Xfree server, we seem to have run into a peculiar behavior.

The previous environment made heavy use of xhost. I proposed that in
cygwin xfree we move to xauth as a more secure environment. That has
for the most part worked out.

The environment is that the x applications are running on a Solaris 10
sparc machine, displaying back to Win7 desktops with cygwin 1.7.x
running on them.

When a user chooses the single X window method of opening a local
window which ssh's over to the Unix machines, things seem to work
okay.

When they choose the "full screen" approach, where the entire window
takes over the desktop, and the window manager and everything else is
running remotely, an xhost is being executed. This causes some
applications to fail because the language used considers that to be a
security risk.

When we look in both local start up files as well as remote start up
files, we do not see where the xhost is being performed.

Is there a way for us to track down where that is occurring so that we
can see about commenting that out?

Thanks!

OpenGL application performance and "ghost" windows remaining

<pre>Hi,

I have installed the latest version of Cygin X server
(1.13.3) and trying to run a 3D OpenGL based application via ssh (PuTTY)
and X11 port forwarding. My host machine is Windows Vista 32 bit and
am running a Lubuntu 12.10 guest VM using Virtualbox. I've started the
XWin server, connected to the VM using SSH and opened an xterm, set
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1.  Running "glxinfo |
grep OpenGL" tells me that I am picking up my graphics card and glxgears
also appears to give me good performance (~2kfps) so believe WGL to be
working ok.

When I try to start my OpenGL application from the
xterm and work through a typical use case, I appear to be getting
"ghost" windows left behind from windows/message boxes that appear as I
work through my example. These also appear when I left
click the left mouse and I can't find a way of getting rid of them.
Also the performance generally seems to be a bit temperamental and
"flickery" between what should be displayed and these "leftover" windows
depending on where I click on the screen.

Have I included sufficient information? I have a couple of jpegs I could upload if this helps.

I'm thinking it could be an issue related to the second of the known issues here:

http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ug/using-aiglx.html

What can I do to improve the performance of my application?

Many thanks!

P.S. Incidentally I know that my application works without any problems in the latest version of Xming (7.5.0.64)
but would like to try get Cygwin/X up and running to the same performance if possible.

<pre>Please consider this a business proposal for you in your country India, and i hope you will do great at it. There is this Material (Penotrin Poette (P.P) used in my work place. I work with pharmaceutical firm in UK which is into the production of Pharmaceutical products, Animal Vaccines, Anti HIV therapy, and Anti-viral drugs and we used to buy Herbal material from Kenya in Africa but is scarce now. It was introduced to my company by an India Dr who is late some years ago. I did research and got new contact of the Local Dealer of the said Product in India and the material is very cheap compare with the price my company is currently buying. I want to introduce you to my company as the Local Dealer of (P.P). I don't want my company to deal directly with the Local Dealer that's why I need an i
ndigenous Partner to bridge the gap so that I or rather We can make profit from each purchase. You buy from them at the rate of 1200 dollars I think about 64,000 INR and sale to my company at the rate of 4800 Dollars/256,000 INR per packet of 50 gram. The company will send delegate to India to buy from you in cash or any means you want. Then you give me my percentage share of the profit after the supply. If you are interested in this business, revert back to get the Procedure, Terms and Conditions of the business after which I will furnish you with Local Dealer and my company details for negotiation and guide you where necessary but you must be honest with me for continuity

I will later give you the contact details of the Local Dealer but get the terms and condition comprehended to enable us proceed better. I want you to present yourself to the company, as the local dealer of the product (Penotrin Poette (P.P). I will use my position within the company to ensure that supply order is issued in your favor. Thereafter, you will buy this product from the local dealer at the rate of (64,000 INR) I think about ($1,200 USD) per packet and supply to the company at the rate of (Rs 256,000 INR) ($4,800.00 USD) per packet. The company will send the representative to India for the purpose of pay and take delivery of the specify material, they will pay you in cash or which ever way you want the money to be paid to you. on delivery of the material to Our company delegate o
n arrival to India. The profit will be shared between you and I as agreed. Before we can move on to the business properly, I need your assurance on the following:

(1)That my percentage of the net profit should be given to me as agreed after supply.

(2)That you shouldn't allow the company to know that I gave you contact of the local dealer because you are to act as the local dealer to the company.

(3)That on no accord should you allow the company or its delegate to have the direct contact of the local dealer. This is in other to protect our interest in subsequent transaction, hence, this transaction would be a continuous one for us.

(4) What will you give me from the net profit as my percentage i personally demand 30% of the Net profit we realize after each transaction.? Kindly be informed, that there is no illegal consequences in this transaction, the product is not prohibited by any law in the world. Beside, you will be dealing with a multi national company, and all its transaction must be in accordance with the law. Upon your assurance on the above mentioned, thereafter, I will inform you on how to approach the company for supply order to be issued in your favor, in this regards I request your full contact address for Official introduction and formalities as well.

I still will like to inform you that the company don't pay upfront for material but cash on confirmation of the product or Bank transfer upon your choice of payment.
Hardware acceleration

<pre>Hi

I'm testing cygwin hardware acceleration using the instructions found
here: http://cygwin.com/xfree/docs/ug/using-aiglx.html

When running the the default options(which implies -wgl) I can see my
graphics card (Intel HD graphics 3000) when running glxinfo | grep
OpenGL

If I start the server with -nowgl, I see the software renderer.

The problem is that I see absolutely no difference between the two
when running the 'glxgears' program: It starts fine and stays like
that for 2-3 seconds, then I start to see some flickering(the gears
seem to be constantly "struggling to rotate), but the fps displayed in
the terminal is not affected(I get a constant average of 1500fps),
just the rendering gets strange.

Perhaps I'm missing something(some other lib that needs to be installed)?

Unable to connect to font server

<pre>I am trying to use an element of the form "tcp/127.0.0.1:7100" in my
font path, and it is being rejected. Furthermore, my testing shows that
XWin is not even attempting to open a socket. Is the "tcp" transport
still supported in the font path? Question 7.7 of the FAQ refers to this
syntax, so presumably it worked at some stage.

The font server I actually wish to use is on a remote machine, but I
have reduced it to a failing test case using localhost:

# Listen for connections on port 7100, in the background
$ socat TCP-LISTEN:7100 stdio &gt;/dev/null &amp;
$ jobs
[1]+  Running                 socat TCP-LISTEN:7100 stdio &gt; /dev/null &amp;

$ startxwin /usr/bin/true -- -fp tcp/127.0.0.1:7100

Welcome to the XWin X Server
Vendor: The Cygwin/X Project
Release: 1.13.3.0
...
[dix] Could not init font path element tcp/127.0.0.1:7100, removing from
list!
...

# The background process is still waiting for a connection on port 7100
$ jobs
[1]+  Running                 socat TCP-LISTEN:7100 stdio &gt; /dev/null &amp;

# But if we make a connection to the port, then the listening process
will stop:
$ socat stdio TCP-CONNECT:127.0.0.1:7100 &lt;/dev/null

[1]+ Stopped socat TCP-LISTEN:7100 stdio &gt; /dev/null

# Conclusion: XWin never even made a connection to port 7100.

I have tested this on two machines, both running Window XP Professional
SP3. The difference is that on one machine Cygwin runs under a non-admin
account, and on the other machine the account has local admin rights. I
got the same results on both.

I've also tested this with Xming, and it does work.

Any idea what's going on?

Kind regards,
Todd

Cygwin/X causes NVIDIA GPU to turn on in Optimus systems

<pre>For those that aren’t aware, NVIDIA Optimus is a feature that makes use of
the Intel GPU that is included in new Intel Core i series processors (Sandy
Bridge and up). Basically, in a system that has both the integrated Intel
GPU and also a discrete NVIDIA GPU, the Intel GPU is used for most desktop
operations and the NVIDIA GPU kicks in when the graphics power is needed for
games and other processing jobs. This is done to save power --- if the
NVIDIA GPU can spend most of its time powered down, your battery lasts
longer. The NVIDIA card can be used to run only particular applications
individually, and its output is dumped over to the Intel GPU for display
using some fast framebuffer magic.

I usually leave Cygwin/X open on my machine because I use it to access GUI
apps running in SSH terminals from time to time. Today I noticed that in an
Optimus environment, it is causing the NVIDIA GPU to kick in, which causes
the NVIDIA GPU to stay powered on when maybe it doesn’t need to.

http://stuff.aaron-kelley.net/2013/03/cygxoptimus.png

I went to the NVIDIA control panel and set xwin.exe specifically to use the
integrated GPU but it still says that xwin.exe is running on the NVIDIA GPU
when I run it. Cygwin/X must be doing something unusual at initialization
that makes the NVIDIA card feel like it has to kick on. I don’t have to
actually launch any X windows to see this occur, it happens moments after I
launch the Cygwin/X server.

I haven’t been able to find anyone else mentioning this. It may be because
Optimus configurations aren’t very common. This also means that this issue
may be tricky to track down. I’m not sure if it will be easy to find
someone who knows about Cygwin/X development who also has access to an
Optimus environment. This might be something that has to go for NVIDIA for
them to fix in their drivers, but it’d be nice to know a little more about
the issue before trying to get in touch with them.

I’m interested in doing anything I can do help address this but I don’t know
where to begin, so I’m welcoming your feedback.

Thanks,

<pre>XWin uses a login shell to configure its environment when it starts
up, and processes spawned from the tray icon inherit XWin environment
so they don't have to be spawned from login shells. Is there a way to
achieve the same effect without using a tray icon?

For example, can I have a desktop shortcut that launches a terminal
emulator with a simple interactive(non-login) shell and still have it
inherit the currently running XWin environment like it was started
from the tray icon?
