Hi,

I'm trying to make building process easier. When I launch cygwin and run
build.sh script, everything is fine, but I want to launch this script from
batch file. I do this:

< at >echo off
F:/cygwin/bin/bash --login -c "cd F:/Projektai/osdev && sh build.sh"

When I launch it, I get errors *i586-elf-gcc: command not found* and
*i586-elf-ld: command not found*. I can't find the solution, how can I fix
it?

Thanks.

One of my favorite comic strips is going web-only next month
and the author is looking for funding:

I am going for the gold plan so I have some artwork to hang in my

How cool would it be to raise enough money to have a Cygwin Hippo
included in the comic?

This isn't really Cygwin-related but I wonder if the battle against TOFU
is well and truly lost. Very few people that I know use it. It's not
even on anyone's radar as something that should be done. Many email
readers default to it.

At NetApp, it's basically the wild west when it comes to quoting style.
Some people use the tried-and-true, "just forward it back along with
email headers". Some people invent their own style, like bracketing
replies with their name. No one puts the quotes first and their replies
after and hardly anyone (besides me) ever trims anything.

Just needed to vent. Not using TOFU makes a lot of sense but I think
the battle is over.

2) Run setup.exe

Choose a download source, root directory, (default text file type =
unix), local package directory, connection type, and download site (for
example, ftp://ftp.nas.nasa.gov), and then select packages.

* Important: the default package selections are insufficient for using
HEASOFT. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY:

Once you have reached the "Select Packages" window, the top-most line
will look something like this:

+All () Default

But by default, not all of Cygwin is installed. You should click the
arrowed circle (or the word "Default") in the first line beside "+All"
until it says "Install" instead of "Default" (one click should do it),
i.e. the top line should then look like this:

+All () Install

This will install all of Cygwin. In the past, we have suggested a set
of required packages for building or using HEASOFT, but as the contents
of Cygwin packages seem to change regularly, we strongly recommend that
you install everything to avoid missing any necessary items.

If you experience problems during the Cygwin setup, please check the
resources available at the Cygwin site:

http://cygwin.com/faq/ (Cygwin FAQ)
http://cygwin.com/lists.html (Cygwin mailing lists)

http://www.cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/setup-net.html (help with setup.exe)

Heasoft is a large package but suggesting to install all cygwin
seems a bit too drastic....

username <at> blah <dot> com

I guess a spider could interpret that. It'd be good to hide it.

Is there any option in sourceware?

I haven't tried it but i've seen some option with a mailman mailing list to hide email address though I don't know if it does. Is there any option like it with sourceware.. are they equivalent in this respect?

I used to have an email account dedicated to mailing lists, with folders for each program whose mailing list I subscribed to, spam there if I got it wasn't a big deal, and when I didn't use it for some months, it got deactivated, which was maddening.. I know my main address won't get deactivated, as I check it often, though getting lots of notifications for those emails is irritating and yahoo instant messenger notifies me with new emails. A great feature but not when it notifies me each time a new post appears on a mailing list.

Is the any patch to solve it and move to correct place?

I'm writing via Gmail and I have enabled the "Use Unicode (UTF-8)

I don't know if this is a shortcoming of the mailing list or Gmail ...

found a solution (other than using only ASCII characters in one's

Never posted here, but somewhat off-topic for the general Cygwin list...

I've been frustrated at the lack of guidance I've found online regarding
how to build an internationalized text-based Unix application, in particular
with reference to handling different character sets. For example, "man"
recognizes the character set specified in locale settings and uses Unicode
punctuation appropriately. OTOH, the cygutils "ascii -e" utility does not
recognize that my LANG specifies UTF-8 and outputs garbage for the
extended half. Should this be considered a bug?

Closer to a real application, how should a program that reads, processes,
and outputs text detect the character set so that it can process the text
correctly? In the absence of a BOM in the input file, should the program
blindly presume the locale-specified character set or analyze the file to
guess it? And what advice is there for guessing? And, once detected, what
takes precedence for output: the input file's character set or the locale
setting?

I presume these issues are either settled or being debated somewhere.
