<pre>Sorry for the spam, but for once things are going in the right direction
and we should submit encouragement.

The National Computer Science School is running a petition about the newly
written *National Curriculum for Technologies*. The Digital Technologies
section of the draft Curriculum for Technologies is a *massive step in the
right direction (w*hich is very unlike what normally happens). If enacted,
it will equip Australian students with the skills they need; not just to
become competent consumers of technology, but to design and create our
shared technological future.

As a person invested in everyone being an digital citizen, the least you
can do is to sign the following petition;

http://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/australian-curriculum-assessment-and-reporting-authority-acara-support-the-draft-digital-technologies-curriculum

If you have time, you should also submit a personal submission by;
email, which is easier than the online form. You need to sign up on the
ACARA website, then email your response to technologies&lt; at &gt;acara.edu.au along
with a cover sheet&lt;http://consultation.australiancurriculum.edu.au/Static/docs/Technologies/Technologies%20feedback%20cover%20sheet.pdf&gt;

streaming to YouTube without Flash.

Combined a Raspberry Pi with a docking station for a Motorola Atrix and you

<pre>PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
---------------------------------
= Got Something to Say About Open Source? =

linux.conf.au is shaping up to be a huge event, and they want your input!
Scheduled to be held at the Australian National University from 28 January to
2 February, 2013, the conference is designed to showcase the best of open
source and community-driven software and hardware. It provides a great
opportunity for open source developers, users, hackers, and makers to share
their ideas and further improve their projects.

The conference is now asking interested people and groups to submit proposals
for talks. This year, they are focusing on deep technical content, and the
things that you think are going to really matter in the future. Do you have
something to say about freedom and privacy, open source cloud systems, or
energy efficient server farms of the future? Or something else that you are
passionate about?

Michael Still, conference director, is excited about the potential for some
truly fascinating talks from a wide range of speakers, saying "to a large
extent, the conference is what the speakers make it".

All proposals will be submitted to the papers committee, this year headed by
Michael Davies, past conference director, and Mary Gardiner, co-founder of the
Ada Initiative. Successful proposals will be announced in August, 2012.

If you have been working on something interesting, now is the time to tell the
world! Visit linux.conf.au, and submit your proposal today.

== About linux.conf.au ==

 - Peter Chubb - Escaping from Google

I have a number of concerns about the new Google privacy policy, especially
in
the way they are breaking down the barriers between the various data silos
they
used to keep. As such I want to escape from gmail, google calendars, picassa
and google docs, while still using an Android phone. I've now just about
achieved this, using owncloud. In this talk, I'll give a brief motivation
for
not using the `free' services from Google, Apple or whoever, and then show
how
to run your own cloud service(s) for calendars, addressbook, random files,
email, and photographs.

<pre>One last reminder: voting for the new sub-committee is currently open at
https://www.linux.org.au/membership/index.php?page=view-election&amp;id=17

Voting closes at 27/04/2012 16:00, Sydney time.

Although there are 3 advertised positions, we have 4 candidates. It is the
intent of the current sub-committee to request that the LA Council appoint
all 4 candidates be accepted as the new sub-committee - unless one of the 4
candidates gets significantly fewer votes than the other 3.

Voting is optional preferential - you choose your most preferred candidate,
and can then optionally rank more candidates below them in the order you'd
prefer to see them elected to the position. If there's anyone you don't
want to see elected at all, rank your other preferences but abstain from
voting for the person you don't want to see elected.
