Monthly Meeting June 12th

<pre>Cpluggers,

Tuesday evening June 12th, Seth Jerome will be speaking on user-friendly
distros, and combining the talk with some everyday CLI (Command Line
Interface).

[my spiel]::
Not familiar with Linux yet? Ever wish you could just jump into Linux
and use it? This is the perfect chance to do just that. Seth Jerome is a
long time Linux user, involved in CPLUG for close to 15 years. He will
be showing you several options for 'distributions' of Linux that are
easy to get started with.

This is also the perfect time to ask questions and get answers about Linux!

Pizza will be ordered at the start of the meeting for $1.50 per slice.

Hope to see you there!

My interest are; 3D CAD, 3D animation and rendering, Geographic
Information Systems and audio/video production.

I'm retired and graphics are a strong interest/hobby. I live in the
Carlisle area and would like to find someone reasonably close to work on
this project. I would buy the computer components and pay for the
computer assembly.

<pre>As a hobby, I have been working on old analog Tektronix scopes. It's
generally easy to download (free) the service manuals in pdf format. They
are often over 400 pages.

Unfortunately, the good people who have made these free pdf files
available for whatever reason have almost never made them text searchable.
Actually, often even the manuals you buy aren't text searchable.

Is there a Linux-based utility or software which can take an existing pdf
file and generate a new version which is text searchable? Regardless of
whatever security or restrictions the original producer built into the pdf
file?

I don't know anything about pdf file systems or structure, so maybe this
is a dumb question. But if it were possible using Linux I'd sure like to
know how. Also, I really do not want to have to use Adobe software for
anything, if at all possible...

Thanks,

Also any recommendation's IP camera brands.

Minicom doesn't see it. Or at least it's complaining that /dev/modem doesn't exist. What I'm seeing in the logs is that the device _is_ seen by the system, but it seems to show up at different USB addresses, depending on what else is going on.

So how do I tell minicom where to look for this?

old kpresenter (.kpr) file problem

<pre>6 years ago, I gave a talk at CPLUG about KnoppMyth, and the
presentation is in KPresenter format (.kpr). Since then, KOffice has
become Calligra, and KPresenter has become Stage. Stage now uses the
same format as LibreOffice Impress (.odp), and there *is* a kpr
conversion tool called calligraconverter, but it produces nonsensical
odp or pdf output (just a bunch of slides with '?' everywhere). Stage
also offers to open kpr files, but it produces the same nonsense when I
open my old presentation.

The damnedest part is that the thumbnail preview for the .kpr file in
Stage looks good. It *should* be able to do this.

I've filed a bug report with the Calligra team, but just in case that
goes nowhere (it seems reasonable that they wouldn't care to support an
ancient version of their old binary file format), does anyone happen to
have an old kpr-compatible installation of KPresenter somewhere? If I
send you my .kpr file, could you send me a PDF back?

My fallback would be to just fire up a VM with an ancient distro on it
that can parse my old file, then spit out a PDF from it.

At the suggestion of Dean, I will be speaking this month on
interconnectivity and compatibility between open and closed source,
using Ubuntu and Windows.

This will focus primarily on office and graphics programs, and show some
web related tools as well. See first hand how compatible LibreOffice is
with Microsoft Office, and how to work seamlessly across your LAN in
both Windows and Linux.

I'll be demonstrating the windows side with VirtualBox, but If someone
has a Windows computer that they would be willing to bring for the demo,
it would help in showing further networking abilities.

See you there!

Speakers

<pre>Cpluggers,

I've noticed a pattern begin to take place in finding speakers for the
monthly meetings. The group of people that are actively coming to CPLUG
now consists of more beginner level users than there were a few years
ago. As a result, the topics do not need to be as advanced as they have
been.

The difficulty is not as much in finding a speaker for the meetings, but
in knowing far enough in advance that the speaker is ready, and what
they will be speaking on. ITT Tech is being very helpful in posting
flyers and getting the word out about it, even to the point of bringing
students to the meetings. Unfortunately, if I'm not aware of the details
for the meeting, no flyers can get posted, and the social media sites
can't get updated.

If we can get ahead enough, I could see CPLUG begin to grow again, as
newcomers will find things well organized and fun. In order to do this,
I'd like to line up speakers from now through July for the monthly
meetings. As of now, I do not have the final word on a speaker for May,
and have no one lined up to speak for June or July.

If you are willing to give a talk / presentation on an open source
subject at CPLUG, please let me know when you'll be available, and what
you'd like to give it on.

Thank you all for your support and participation!

which also includes the makefile and the other bits you need to build this.

Here's the short bash script I just hacked to run this:

#!/bin/bash
# short script to do the export, then invoke usbscale...
#
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib
while(true) do
usbscale;
done

It just runs continuously, printing out the weight that the scale sees, until I hit ctrl-C.

Now, any thoughts as to how I can get large values of oz. converted to lbs./oz.???

It's probably been a couple of decades since I last did any c programming... :-)

The c program complains that it can't find libusb, even though I downloaded and installed v1.09 of that product -- into /usr/local. I'm rusty enough with my c programming that I can't quite figure out what's telling this code to look where for the libraries.

Some of the other stuff either can't find the scale at all, or returns not-terribly-useful info.

Have any of you guys got this sort of thing to work?

Backup Plan Assist Anyone?

<pre>Cplug members,

May be a bit of a different post...

I have since 1995 (back when browsers had grey backgrounds) been coding
and managing servers for my
own company which provides a melting pot of web sites, apps, software
and data for local companies.
Over the years I have basically been a one man developer entity. Have
had employees but mainly
for sales, graphic work or basic html type stuff. Current time am
totally one man...

Over the last couple weeks I have had My best friend and 2 family
members diagnosed with cancer
and even though young in mind have been thinking about a backup plan if
something would happen to myself.

I do communicate with other developers as my self but none are local,
one such person from South Carolina
said he found a backup for himself at his local Cplug group.

Wondering if anyone local to Lancaster is in the same boat as myself.
Only local people I have relationships with
are pretty much windoze guys. I have a few windows servers but the
remaining are linux of the redhat flavors (fedora, centos).

I have not attended any Cplug meetings but am hoping to some point in
the not too distant future.

People who know me call me genuine. Not out to impress anyone, love what
I do and like
helping my customers. Even though I'm not as young as I once was I still
play video games daily,
love heavy metal music. Used to run gaming tournaments couple years back
in Lancaster, founding member
of lagamerz (Lancaster Area Gamerz) if anyone ever heard of them.

Anyone like to discuss? Maybe meet on the topic?

Thanks,
Dan

<pre>Cpluggers,

This Tuesday, April 10th, Gino will be giving a crash course on DD. As
you know this will take place at the ITT Tech Harrisburg Campus at 6:30pm.

There might also be a group of ITT students there, so this could be a
great opportunity to evangelize and show them our enthusiasm for the
Linux world. It can really be fun, and most of these students are
probably not seeing that side of it. This is our chance to show them that.

See you there!

Drupal 7 Help With Panels :: Directions how to set a panel to override a content type rendering

<pre>I have scoured the internet, read the directions and really struggling
to figure out how to accomplish my goal. Anyone that can help will be
rewarded with good karma and possibly more if you can save me some
time getting this to work.

I am working on a Drupal 7 fresh install site. I have setup two
content types Albums and Songs. I have linked the songs to the albums
with a taxonomy term named album so that I can create a view that will
display all albums and then clicking on the album cover will go to a
view that will display the album and list all the songs on that album.

The panel that I have created is working great and rendering what I
want (the album cover), and I have a list of songs on that album that
link to each individual song. I currently have the panel at
/music/%node. I was hoping that setting the panel at /albums/%node
would over-ride the node rendering, however that is not the case.

So what I am struggling with is having the panel view render when you
visit /albums/[title] and /node/42 (which is an node that is an album
content type).

I tried setting up a context to force it to use a specific panel,
however their is no "Reaction" to use a panel for the context as I am
seeing, just block and region.

Thanks in advance!
