posting the following spreadsheet containing items I would like to get
rid of.

Everything is first come, first serve. Please email me to reserve an
item. Strong preference given to people willing to come pick things up,
as opposed to wait for the next meeting.

I will continue to post items to this page, and will post again once
everything is on the list for this round.

<description>In my quest to get my family FOSS I've already gotten them using
Thunderbird and OpenOffice. I've also gotten my mom to be a bit of a
geek (still working on it) and now I've begun it for my little brother
by convincing him to take C++ this year in school. He's homeschooled so
he's self teaching out of 'for Dummies'. This has lead to the problem
that I face often and that is, there is nothing practical to put the
knowledge to for us. So I thought I'd ask whether any of you had any
ideas of projects he could do to practice what he's working on (he
specifically mentioned he couldn't think of when he'd ever want to use
an array).

would work. Well, guess what!

None of the iw... routines show anything.

lshw -C network does nothing because lshw isn't on this computer.

The pci card is another Level One device - WNC-301.

I looked under System/Network/wireless and don't see this card listed.

I'm wondering if, early on, I didn't disable something in the network
arena because I didn't need it.

Any suggestions.

As far as I know, the card is installed properly.

<description>I purchased today a WNC-0305USB 11 gig wireless USB adapter.

I plugged it into a USB port and rebooted.

Nothing appears on the desk top (no icon or whatever).

The software that comes with it is MAC/MS, of course.

I see I have iwconfig, iwconfig, iwevent, iwgetid, iwlist, iwpriv and
iwspy (all in /sbin)

/var/log/dmesg mentions USB several times; but I don't see anything with
the above WSN number or any mention of wireless. Of course, I don't
really know what I'm looking for.

So, what's my next step?

Just in case: CentOS 5 distribution.

    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.org.user-groups.linux.cplug.general/11638</link>
    <description>Howdy.

Just looking for a few opinions. First the background. I have a Compaq
Contura 410c, probably circa 1995 or thereabouts. 50 MHz 486 with, I
think, 32 MB RAM. Ooh! And a color screen. The battery is shot, but I
don't plan on taking it anywhere. (FWIW, this was the machine Andersen
Consulting issued to my wife when she went to work for them back in '98.
She kinda forgot to give it back when they gave her something better.)
It has a floppy drive, 1 GB hd (which I can swap out for something
bigger if need be), and a PCMCIA ethernet adapter. No USB or CD.

I'd like to install a very lightweight distro and run mail and gopher
servers on it. No X is necessary. A few years ago, when I first
planned to do this, I kinda got sidetracked by new babies and a new home
and a new job. I also recall there being several very small
distributions that would run on this sort of hardware.

Any thoughts on what I should be looking at as far as a Linux distro and
mail server software?

Thanks, folks.

Gotta clear out the radio shack so I have a box full (at least 50) of
Linux distributions. These are installation CDs that will run or
install on hardware back to the Pentium era. Lots of Red Hat, SUSE, and
a bunch of 'run off the CD' distros. Great for someone who knows LInux
or wants to. Email me and tell me what you will do with these. I can
use them as target practice but I'm looking for someone that can use
them.

<description>I have people sending me stuff in *.doc and other m$ formats, and so far open
office does just fine in terms of opening those files. However, when I go
to print anything the only choice that comes up in that context is "generic
printer" and trying to print to that gives me an error popup.

I ran across info somewhere or other talking about the program that's in the
open office directory that needs to be run, with regard to setting things up
for some other printer besides that -- "spadmin"? So I run it and select the
printer (LJ5MP in my case) and tell it "cups" where it gives me the chance
to.

Trying it out just now I get the "error while printing" error box again.

Am I missing something here?

Okay, one more quick mention that if you sign up by the conference
today, you'll get a sweet t-shirt! (the deadline was previously
Friday, but was moved back due to the printer being on vacation ;-)

Also note that there's only 34 seats left as of now.

You can sign up here:

CPOSC is a one day Open Source conference right here in Harrisburg.
There's 3 tracks and 18 speakers, it should be a lot of fun! More

    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.org.user-groups.linux.cplug.general/11624</link>
    <description>All,

I'm looking for an enterprise-class clustering and virtual server solution
that would allow me to:

- aggregate the resources of a large number of physical servers into
allocatable pools of resources including CPU, memory, disk space, etc.
- create a large number of virtual servers which can each be allocated, with
fine granularity, a fixed or variable amount of resources from each pool
- replicate virtual servers across clusters so that any cluster, in addition
to running its own virtual servers, can act as a secondary, backup server for
another cluster (with failover happening automatically in the event of an
entire cluster failure or even a virtual server failure)
- easily manage clusters and virtual servers

Does anything currently available even come close, or is this wishful
thinking?

<description>...inspired by a comment in the "Tone" thread...

Has anyone tried the PS3-flavor of Linux...on a PS3 that is?

I'm trying to find an excuse to get one instead of a new PC and "great
games" isn't going to cut it with the "Boss."

What about any of the other game stations?

    <title>[Somewhat OT] Ruby Club</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.org.user-groups.linux.cplug.general/11607</link>
    <description>Hello,

I just wanted to pimp^H^H^H^H let everyone know that in addition to the
wonderfully full featured LUG, the area also sports a handsome
programming club.

We are the Central PA Ruby Brigade. We have a neglected blog:
http://cpruby.org/ and a Meetup group: http://ruby.meetup.com/102/

Despite our meager web presence we actually have a pretty decent turn
out for the meetings. We also have some really good topics, except the
months when I speak.

If you have any interest, we are meeting at ITT (same place as the LUG)
on Thursday.

This months topics are 'Introduction To irb' and
'inject/collect/select/reject -- aw yeah'.

Hope to see you there!
