I have a situation where I'll have to limit access to particular web
sites/servics to specific times of the day (i.e. Facebook). What are
the current "better" tools for doing content filtering like this?

I'm using Untangle as my firewall, and it seems that it will cost
$300ish bucks to get this type of filtering on there. Being a Linux
guy, I know I can do this for no cost, with a little effort on my part.
I'm willing to consider different firewall solutions if needed.

Comments or recommendations? Thanks!

Shawn

I not even notice this till about a week ago (my upgrades all worked and

Time marches on, and it is great to have all the latest and greatest
program features as part of Debian Stable.

Anyone else have different or similar experiences?

Invoicing

Hi Gang!

Well...it seems as if my 10 year old version of Quicken is coming to an
end soon & will essentially blow up on me someday.

To prepare for that day I want to start transitioning to another
software. I ideally would like to use GNUCash for accounting, but don't
have a lot of spare time to ramp up on it, so I was thinking of a
transitional solution (i.e. KMyMoney, etc.) to handle the day-to-day
transactions. But I don't believe any of these have an invoicing solution.

To that end I have been doing lots of research on an invoicing solution.
During that search I came across Simple Invoices. Essentially a web
server based invoice software. It looks pretty cool because you can
essentially run in from anything with a web browser...including a
smartphone (COOL!)

Just wondering is anyone has used it or something else & has any
suggestions, tips, etc. they wish to share.

Using Google Drive On Linux

Hey folks. Wanted to share a little something I came up with last night.
Please note....this is a very long post.

USING GOOGLE DRIVE ON LINUX:
----------------------------------------------------

Thought I would share a solution to something that something that has
been vexing me for awhile. With the help of a friend & a little
searching I have a solution that is liveable for synching Google Drive
on Linux. Plus it allows me to give back to the FLOSS community that has
given me so much.

First a little about my environment. I have a number of Google accounts
for different purposes. This also corresponds to the folder structure in
my Home Drive. See example below:
[ABC]
[DEF]
[123]
[456]

The original article is located at
http://www.howtogeek.com/130380/how-to-use-google-drive-on-linux-2-unofficial-solutions/).
I followed it, but did try some experimentation & was able to get things
working the way I wanted them (God bless FLOSS!).

There is also a project out there aiming to provide a GUI, but it looks
like it has been discontinued. The link is here –
https://github.com/bdalenoord/grive-gtk.

I have included the steps from the original article, but where
appropriate I have also provided my customizations as they appear on my
machine (Kubuntu 12.10).

I used konsole as my terminal software, but I am sure anyone will do.

Step 1: Install Grive.
***********************

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install grive

Step 2: Create Folders.
**************************

Original:
------------
mkdir ~/grive

Customization:
---------------------
mkdir ~/home/<username>/[ABC]/< at >Grive

You can also manually created the folder as well. I found that you can
also change the name on the fly & the sync will still work!

Step 3: Switch to Directory.
*******************************

Original:
------------
cd ~/grive

Customization:
---------------------
cd ~/home/<username>/[ABC]/< at >Grive

Step 4: Authenticate Grive.
*******************************

grive -a

You will need to copy the authentication string & paste it into the
address bar of your browser & hit enter. You will be prompted to login
to your Google account & allow access. Take the resulting authentication
code & paste it in the terminal window & hit enter.

Step 5: Synching Grive.
**************************

Original:
------------
cd ~/grive

grive

Customization:
---------------------

Running my customization below works just fine, but I wanted to be able
to run int from a menu. Thanks to a tip from a friend I put the
following into a bash file:

cd ~/home/<username>/[ABC]/< at >Grive
grive

I saved the file as “ABC_Sync.sh” (no quotes).

Step 6: Using Grive.
***********************
I then saved it to my Home folder & then copied it into /bin by doing
the following:

sudo mkdir /bin/Grive

You will be asked to authenticate with your password. Copy the script
into the Grive folder by doing the following:

sudo cp /home/<username>/ABC_Sync.sh /bin/Grive

Step 7: Menu Entries.
*************************

The last step for me was to create easy to use menu entries to making
synching easier. With KDE Menu Editor I created a “Web Services” menu
entry & under that an entry called “Google Drive.” (Both with no quotes)

I then created menu entries for each of my accounts with the following
parameters:

saved it to my Home folder & then copied it into /bin by doing the
following:
Name: [ABC]
Description: I left this blank but you can fill it in if you like.
Comment: I left this blank but you can fill it in if you like.
Command: bash /bin/Grive/ABC_Sync.sh

You can edit further with an icon if you wish.

Step 8: The Acid Test.
**************************

While the above bash script can be run from a terminal window, I wanted
to make sure it would work from the menu.

After placing some random files in the Grive folder, I navigated to its
menu location; clicked on the appropriate entry & voila! A terminal
window comes up showing the synchronization & the graciously closes.
Looking at Google drive on my android & the website, shows the new files.

This isn't the most elegant solution, but until Google gets its head out
of its arse & decides to actually make good on their promise, this will
do me just fine. I would be happy to share the script with anyone if
they wish.

One of our guys was asking if someone knew an easier way:

does anyone know where we can download
libm.so.2 solaris 10? We want the Ultra version (not x86)

Trying to pick it off a solaris 10 iso was too much like work
and he'd rather not do a full install just to get 1 library.

Thanks,
Chris

catching up to the digital age

A very long time ago I read a book by an uber futurist (can't remember
the authors name)[A]. Some of what he thought was going to happen is
only starting now. The book clearly laid out the ease of scaling and how
that would change everything. Trouble was many insisted on doing things
the old fashioned (broken) way, and blaming every one but them selves.
But what was clear to him back then, lots of people are figuring out
now. And that is encouraging.

There are so many related topics, but to start with, here are two:

1/
Re-inventing Publishing and "Tools Of Change" (TOC)
Look up:
O Reilly TOC
Tools of Change for Publishing

To get the best of toc 2013 pdf file you are required to register and
then buy the $0.00 pdf book.
Publishing is not just books and ebooks. It includes media like video
and audio and "interactive" venues. Like how about the app Shazam that
was made practical by parallel GPU computing on the server side.

2/
Deploy your own "cloud" with Debian "Wheezy"
http://www.debian.org/News/2012/20120425

David, is this how you made your home cloud (Software as a service -
SaaS) last month?

[A]
With out his name my digital search for his book "Thinking Digital" came
up blank. (he wrote it before the digital age)

MADRID - A Spanish association representing open-source software users has filed a complaint against Microsoft Corp to the European Commission, in a new challenge to the Windows developer following a hefty fine earlier this month.

The 8,000 member-strong Hispalinux, which represents users of the Linux operating system, said Microsoft had made it difficult for users of computers sold with its Windows 8 platform to switch to Linux and other operating systems.

Lawyer and Hispalinux head Jose Maria Lancho said he delivered the complaint to the Madrid office of the European Commission at 0900 GMT on Tuesday.

In its 14-page complaint, Hispalinux said Windows 8 contains an "obstruction mechanism" called UEFI Secure Boot that controls the start-up of the computer and means users must seek keys from Microsoft to boot up another operating system._______________________________________________

It takes it's power from a ps/2 port. ctrl, ctrl, #, enter - switching, plus the button on the unit. I think it does scan, etc. Has a port for external power, but never came with the wall wart.

Plus a small form factor keyboard (no number pad) with integrated touchpad, both ps/2.

Both free to a good home.

Hi all,

I was running the latest version of crunchbang, which is based on debian
wheezy and crunchbang waldorf.

I had some problems getting virtualbox going and was thinking of going
to debian stable until I realized it was going to make my commonly used
programs too out dated.

So I had another look for the solution, and this one just worked as i
followed the steps here.
The URL:
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=80468

summary:
apt-get --reinstall install virtualbox virtualbox-dkms
is replaced with:
apt-get --reinstall install virtualbox-4.1

Guest Additions were there too.

Since it uses apt-get install dkms,
I wonder if virtualbox-4.2 could also have worked?

Mel

PS
Not the first time I successfully installed virtualbox. But there are
too many how to's that do not seem to work out there.

ALSO, if you are not using crunchbang, you probably need some
distribution to tame Wheezy (testing) or you could run into problems.
Yet you could run into problems any way.
Your Mileage May Vary.
Hope this helps.

mounting external drive or flash drive

I need to mount an external drive or flash drive. To do this I need
to add a command to
the /etc/fstab file. But I don't know how to to this.
Can anyone tell me how?
My external drive is a Seagate.
I don't know the brand, name, or serial # of my flash drive
I can be contacted at:
rpboland< at >gmail.com (slow because I have to use a public
library computer)
       403-764-3681

In case you are wondering why I need to do this here is the story.
I recently moved from Ubuntu to Debian Squeeze. I am happy with
the move except that my Lyx files from my Ubuntu days were created
with Lyx 2.0.3 but Squeeze runs Lyx 1.6.7 so I cannot use Lyx on these
files on Squeeze. This is a major problem for me so I tried to get Lyx
2.0.3 installed on Squeeze eventuallly trying to get it from sid.
But unfortunately, a lot of other things got loaded from sid and broke my
system. I am planning to reinstall an operating system to clean the mess
up but first I need to back up about a day of programming work.

Currently on boot up I am given a plain login screen (XWindows is not
running). I can also run in recovery mode. But if I plug in a flash drive
or external hard drive it is not mounted though the system recognizes
that the drive has been plugged in. The system complains that fstab
does not contain a mount command for the drive.

Other options:
     1) start XWindows. I tried startx but it doesn't run properly.
     2) ftp my files somewhere. I need a where and I don't know
if I have an internet connection.
     3) Buy and install a second hard drive. Seems like overkill.
     4) ?????

Thanks in advance for any help,

Ralph (Rocky) Boland

PBX Question

Hey,

I am working a small PBX project and a couple of the big things needed are voicemail to e-mail and outlook integration. I’ve been playing around with both the free version of 3CX and also PBX in a flash, and I’m finding that 3CX has most of the features wanted in the free version. PBX in a flash has all of the features, but they are nowhere near as straight forward to configure, nor as integrated into one complete package. This is my first time working on a PBX so I was wondering if anyone had any experience or suggestions.

Thanks
