Pizza party and installfest / triagefest tomorrow at Creative Arts Charter School

Hi,

Partimus.org is going to be hosting a pizza party and triagefest /
installfest tomorrow at the Creative Arts Charter School at 1601 Turk
Street at Pierce St in San Francisco from 1 pm to about 3:30 pm.

We have about a dozen machines to install with GNU-Linux. Mostly detail
work (packing notebooks up, numbering them). If there's human resources and
interest, post installation work could be done (log in, connect to the
wifi, validate that a browser works -- that sort of thing. Q/A basically.

Bring USB sticks with Lubuntu 12.04 on them. If you don't have that,
Ubuntu 12.04 will do. No need to worry about UEFI. Please also bring
everything that you would need to triage hardware. Screw drivers, needle
nose pliers, etc.

When you arrive, please text or call Christian at 415-351-1300 so that I
can let you in, as the school is quite large, and you could get lost.
Thanks!

Open Source Finance Meetup in San Francisco,February 20

Last week's Department of Justice lawsuit against S&P reminds that five
years after the financial crisis, the global financial system is still
broken and constructive solutions remain out of reach. We believe that open
source tools can bring the transparency that this system needs, and have
formed a Meetup group in San Francisco to discuss open source /open data
finance concepts.

Our next Meetup is Wednesday, February 20th at 6:00 PM at the offices of
Kaggle, 188 King Street Unit 502, San Francisco, CA. To attend in person,
please join the Open Source Finance Meetup
<http://www.meetup.com/Open-Source-Finance> group and RSVP. A description
of this meeting follows:

Rating agency assessments of sovereign debt have been in the news for some
time. In 2011, S&P faced enormous criticism for downgrading the US, while
all agencies have been criticized for downgrading Greece too late and for
discriminating against emerging market countries. Less is said about US
state bond ratings, but interested observers might wonder why California is
still rated lower than many toxic assets despite balancing its budget.

Instead of analyst discretion, sovereign and state credit ratings can and
should be calculated with transparent, open source computer models. Last
year, I introduced such a model - the
<http://www.publicsectorcredit.org/pscf.html> Public Sector Credit Framework
- which I will demonstrate. The tool uses a combination of Excel and C to
perform a multi-year fiscal simulation on the target government.

No food this time, but we are offering a virtual meeting alternative. Up to
24 remote attendees can access the session using GoToMeeting. There is no
charge for attending a GoToMeeting but you do have to download a small
client app. Most major platforms are supported. Details are as follows:

  with continuous integration.

About the Speaker:

"slides" from BALUG 2012-07-17 screen(1) presented byMichaelPaoli

If you missed the talk/presentation or want to review some of the
materials, from the BALUG 2012-07-17 screen(1) talk/presentation by
Michael Paoli, "slides" are now available here:
http://www.archive.balug.org/2012/2012-07-17/screen.odp

Also, subsequent to my screen(1) presentations, various folks
noted/commented:

tmux(1) - although screen(1) has been around much longer, tmux(1) is
quite similar to screen(1), and is being more actively
maintained/developed than screen(1). tmux(1) can also be configured to
have key binding quite similar (or perhaps even "identical") to those
of screen(1). tmux(1) is also much better at handling
internationalization and various character sets.

emacs(1) - has a daemon mode (e.g. --daemon option). With such use, it
acts as a server, and one can reconnect to it, e.g. by using
emacsclient.

Thanks also to BabyCenter.com for providing earlier copy of highly
similar set of "slides" (I'd earlier done highly similar presentation
at BabyCenter.com, but unintentionally lost my BALUG set of "slides"
before archiving them for BALUG. The set now archived for BALUG should
be identical or nearly identical to the set I actually presented at
BALUG on 2012-07-17).

Linux Users' Group of Davis,January 21: 14th anniversary party, with talk by "Hacker Lab" of Sacramento

The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD) will be holding the following meeting:

  Monday
  January 21, 2013
  7:00pm - 9:00pm

Presentation:

  Sacramento's "Hacker Lab"
  Charles Blas, Co-Founder

Hacker Lab occupies a 10,000+ sq. ft. warehouse in the Sacramento
grid. The front area has common and co-working spaces for tech
collaboration, and the back area is a maker- and hacker-space with
access to metal- and wood-working equipment as well as electronics
equipment (oscilloscopes, spare parts, breadboards, etc...)

This talk will be a quick walk down memory lane from Charles' days at UC
Davis in the mid-90's, and how that experience led him to co-found the
Hacker Lab. He'll discuss why Sacramento needs another hacker-space,
and what Hacker Lab and the Linux Users' Group of Davis can do for
  each other.

Anniversary Celebration:

This meeting marks the 14th anniversary of the founding of the
Linux Users' Group of Davis. To celebrate, we'll be providing free
pizza, snacks, drinks and birthday cake. We'll also have give-away
prizes, including a number of books donated by O'Reilly Media.

This meeting will be held at a special location:

  Veterans' Memorial Center
  Club Room
  203 East 14th Street
  Davis, California 95616

Yet another reason why for DSL I do use Raw Bandwidth/ don't useAT&T

Example scenario - have had my present land line over 12 years and Raw
Bandwidth DSL service on that line for over 9 years. Until very
recently, haven't had any significant issues with the Pac Bell/SBC/AT&T
POTS service or the Raw Bandwidth DSL service on the line. Starting
rather recently (not sure precisely when it started), been having funky
intermittent issue with the POTS service (but no DSL problems).
Symptoms have included such funkiness as: phone rings once - I wait for
a 2nd ring to pick it up - 2nd ring doesn't come, I pick it up after
2nd ring should have occurred but doesn't, caller is still there.
Folks calling my number report intermittently having it answered by a
live woman live (not recording or machine or the like) but staticy/noisy
connection - this seems to happen intermittently (happened and reported
to me by two different people that called me today - but about half of
those calls apparently are making it through to my phone and me).

Anyway, something funky with the POTS service - exceedingly improbable
to be "inside wire", so I call 611 for AT&T's service. Both when I
called many hours ago earlier today, and also when I check again,
starting to "walk the menu" for service, I encounter:
<dialed 611>
<AT&T tones play>
Welcome to 611 repair service.
Please use your Touch-Tone keypad to choose where to direct your call.
<Spanish>
For repair to your home or business land line, press 1, ...
<pressed 1>
Thank you for calling AT&T. If your call is regarding a DSL service,
unfortunately there is a major issue that is preventing customers from
connecting to the DSL network at this time. DSL support is working on
the issue and will not be able to assist you at this time. If your call
is not regarding a DSL service, please remain on the line. Thank You.

So, in over 12 years with the POTS line and over 9 years of Raw
Bandwidth DSL on that line, the first time I ever call AT&T service,
not only do they tell me (without my even asking) that their AT&T DSL
service has a major issue, but, out of curiosity when I check back
(more than two) hours later, they continue to tell me they're still
having a major DSL issue. I hope that's not AT&T's typical DSL status,
but thus far 100% of the time that's what they've reported to me via
their repair service. Comparatively, with Raw Bandwidth, in over 9
years, they've only had one single outage that was long enough that I
ever even noticed (it was some hours or so), and Raw Bandwith was
excellent on reporting status, progress, estimated time to resolution,
etc., and what the problem/issue was (yes, it was an upstream AT&T
problem). Other than that, I've never even noticed a Raw Bandwith
outage they've been so short (but have had emails from Raw Bandwidth,
when they've had outages, reporting the start time and end time (and
short duration - often on the order of minutes or less) of outage -
typically that's the only way I even know they had any outage at all).

Now, ... if I can just get AT&T to get their POTS service working
reliably again. Shouldn't be *too* hard, ... they've had lots more
decades to practice that. Yeah, I called this afternoon, they say
they'll have it fixed by end of business Thursday.

MAIN PRESENTATION

  TOPIC: Real-World Linux Security

  PRESENTED BY:
    Rick Moen,
    recovering sysadmin

  TOPIC SUMMARY:
Ever wanted to have a gentle, novice-friendly introduction to Linux
security? This is your chance. Speaker Rick Moen is going to start
from novice levels only, and give a general and pragmatic guide to
Linux security primarily for desktop and casual users who nonetheless
would like to have a decent grasp of the basics.

  ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Rick Moen (http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/) is longtime senior system
administrator and member of SVLUG's Web Team, who also runs nearby
Linux user group CABAL (http://linuxmafia.com/cabal/), meeting at
his and his wife's house in West Menlo Park, and has been fooling
with various Unixes since the 1980s. Having formerly been a technical
employee at several Linux firms (Linuxcare, VA Linux Systems, and
California Digital Corp.) during decades past, he stresses that it's
not his fault and he has an alibi.

  LOCATION:

    Symantec
    VCAFE Facility
350 Ellis Street (near E. Middlefield Road)
    Mountain View, CA 94043

Directions on how to get there are listed at:

    http://www.svlug.org/directions/veritas.php

We've tried our very best for these directions to be accurate.
If you have any improvements to make, please let SVLUG's volunteers know!
  webmaster at svlug.org

POST-MEETING GATHERING:

If you just can't get enough, a smaller group usually goes to a local
restaurant/diner after the meeting: Frankie, Johnnie & Luigi, Too,
939 West El Camino Real between Shoreline and Castro, Mountain View.

We look forward to seeing you there!
