Hello ALEians, from Berkeley.  :)

Anyone interested in attending this meeting there locally?

=====  SUMMARY INTRODUCTION  =====
If you value knowing, using or contributing to free software,

It's easy - a WiFi cafe, schoolroom, a house or apartment is great.

Scan the rest of this announcement - there's a lot of info there, but
you don't need to read it in detail.

Is anyone there interested in attending this meeting?
Reply to this message on your local list & see who'd like to come to a
meeting.

Ask any question you like on the Global mailing list too.

help you. :) I've included step by step plans here & on the
BerkeleyTIP-Global Group website. Ask questions to the
BerkeleyTIP-Global mailing list, & the community can help each other
out.

Reply to this message on your local list to let me know who will head up
your local meeting effort. Also say "Hi" on the BerkTIPGlobal mailing
list.  :)

freedom software, technology, or culture you are interested in,
on SEPTEMBER 6, SATURDAY, (& the 1st Saturday of every month)
the place YOU WILL WANT TO BE is at a local meeting of:

Berkeley GNU(Linux)/BSD Freedom Culture

You will have about 20 educational talks to watch
[from the top minds in the GNU(Linux)/BSD Free SW world].

Learn, Install or Upgrade, Communicate, & Create.

We will watch talks, then get together Globally-USA on IRC & VOIP to
discuss anything & everything.

===== 1 WEEK TO ARRANGE LOCAL MEETINGS =====
With 1 week to go before the meeting,
you have ample time to arrange a local meeting place & meeting.

I've created a simple plan/ set of instructions for you
- all you have to do is follow the steps.

There's already been interest expressed in BatonRouge, Boston, Chicago,
Denver, Detroit, Hawaii, Montana, NorthCarolina, Virginia, Canada &
Columbia.  & Berkeley/SiliconValley.  & from FSF, FreeBSD & Debian
people. (And that's just from my small, part time effort on this.)

Who will be the person(s) to arrange your local meeting details?
Maybe it's you. (& it's straightforward, and easy to do.)

=====  WHO SHOULD ATTEND  =====
Parts of this meeting are relevant for:
Computing & technology professionals, business people, non-profits,
educators, students, scientists, (re)searchers, engineers, artists, &
home & personal computer users.

The meeting is Free, no money $ cost.
- & You might want to make a donation to support its growth/benefits.

I invite you to join our mailing list at
http://groups.google.com/group/BerkTIPGlobal

=====  VOLUNTEERING - ME & YOU  =====
Note: I'm putting this together as my volunteer effort for the
community, in my almost nonexistent "free/spare" time. I've designed
this as a "self-reliant" event. I'll certainly try to help everyone
out, but this event doesn't depend on me - if _you_ want a successful
event, it depends on _you_ (collectively). It's a self reliant event, &
I've worked hard to ensure it is easy for you to succeed in making &
having a successful event/ experience(s).

Forward this announcement wherever you think it will do some good: like,
any list you don't see me posting this to.

I'm sending this to about 15 LUGs around the USA, plus come topic
groups, ex BSD, FSF, GNU, Debian, Gentoo, KDE, GNOME, Python. Fee free
to send this announcement to any community email list where it could do
some good.

=======================================================================
=======================================================================
If I had lots of time, I'd complete this section. But, since I want
this announcement to go out now, I'll leave this merely as complete as
it is. You can find most of this information on the BerkTIPGlobal group
website. Ask any questions you have on the group mailing list.

This next meeting I am stepping this up from a local Berkeley meeting,
toward its goal of being a Global meeting. For the September 6 meeting
I'm working to get USA locations up & connected. I call this month's
meeting "Global-USA". Anyone is welcome to set up a simultaneous
meeting anywhere in the world. But _my_ efforts this month are
primarily directed to getting USA groups going. Next month I'll focus
on getting Americas' groups added.

=====  1) Local Meeting Management/Arrangement Plan  =====
For people who want to have a local meeting, whoever does the work is
the leader. Here is a Plan for you to follow to arrange a meeting:

videos they want to watch to their laptop. This ensures you are self
sufficient, & aren't depending on someone else to bring the videos you

At the appropriate hour, watch the relevant video. Get on IRC with
others watching the same video & discuss it.

===== 4) IRC & VOIP - ProgrammingParty = VOIP this meeting  =====
If you know WiFi, internet connection sharing, IRC, or VOIP, come & help
out on getting connection sharing going for local meetings, getting IRC
up for all meetings to join, & getting VOIP going.

VOIP = everyone bring a laptop, Audio Headset & microphone, WiFi

Issue with virtual hosts in Apache 2.2.9 on Debian

I've had a strange issue with my Apache instance on my Debian box since I
updated it earlier this week. I'm using Debian's stock configuration for
enabling name virtual hosts (even though I currently only have one site active).
In my ports.conf file I have this:

Listen 80
NameVirtualHost *:80

<IfModule mod_ssl.c>
    # SSL name based virtual hosts are not yet supported, therefore no
# NameVirtualHost statement here
   Listen 443
</IfModule>

Then I have virtual host stanzas in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default like
this:

<VirtualHost *:80>
[. . .]
</VirtualHost>

It seems like until earlier this week, that "Listen 80" line was unnecessary,
but when my default site no longer loaded, I added it in, and now everything's
fine. I've tried to read the Apache documentation for virtual hosts, and that
"NameVirtualHost *:80" clause looks like it's all I should theoretically need
for requests on port 80. When I comment the Listen 80 out and reload the
configuration, it doesn't listen anymore.

Anyboday have any ideas about what's going on?

Thanks.

locale -a all I get is a long a$$ list of all possible languages. I
thought that I had it set to en_UTF-8.

Out of stupidity I just googled "youtube".

The first hit included a youtube search box.

First time I've seen that. Is there a way I can get that for my
website? Or is that something custom Google did for Youtube?

Thanks

Top open source tools for multimedia web page development

For an artistic adult who is smart, but not necessary technically
inclined, what would the best open source tools to learn to be able to
do slick, hip multimedia web pages that integrate audio, video, blogs,
and even aggregate data on what's hot in a specific genre of music/film?
    I think a steep learning curve is OK in this case, as long as there
are good books/tutorials available for it.

Ok. I know I've heard this before but for the life of me I can't find
it.

I'm looking for a podcast client that handles video podcast's Ideally
it would sync with an IPOD but that isn't critical. I don't download
that many of them. However a couple of my fav pod casts now do video
stuff also.

As usually I'm thanking everyone in advance.

Oh I'm using Hardy for this. After much going back and forth, it just
works for me without much tweaking.

NFS Issues on Debian after upgrade

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

  I just upgraded one of my debian clients to latest testing/unstable.
Everything looks good except when I mount up my nfs server I can't write
to any files. I try as user "robert" on the client writing to
~robert/foo and even though the directory is 755 robert.users. On an
ubuntu client I can mount the export just fine and have no issues.
There is nothing in the logs on either the nfs server or client to
indicate any problems, just the fact the client can't write to any
files and I can't read anything that is not world readable.

Thoughts?

Custom bootable CD or DVD

Hi everyone,

I've been tasked with building a turn-key Linux box that will boot
from a CD or DVD and run one specific application. It will need
to have an HD or SSD available for swapping and writing logfiles, but
the OS, the custom user-land application, and all required libraries
will run from the CD.

I've played around with DIY Linux before, and got to the point of
booting a custom CD with Busybox and a shell. However, from an
"enterprise friendliness" standpoint it would be good to base this
project on a mainstream distro. Is there any particular distro I
should look at? In the absence of suggestions otherwise, I hear a
faint voice yelling "Slack!" in the distance...

Thanks,

Is there anything buried in the log that i'm missing?
