<pre>So some NC State grad students correlated user's ages and reputation on
Stack overflow. Overall, older devs (37 and up) had better reputations
(meaning they provided more helpful information) than younger developers.
This trend held true even if you looked at only "recent" technologies like
mobile development.

http://news.ncsu.edu/releases/wms-murphyhill-age-2013/

This is rather interesting to think about since there is a perception that
employers often fire older, more expensive/experienced developers to hire
cheaper, younger devs with more current skills.

there was an obvious choice in an "other" answer, I folded it up into
that answer.

I apologize for the formatting; I don't have a paid surveymonkey
account, so had to cut/paste and try to clean it up as best I could.

If you have any questions let me know and I'll try to answer as best I can.

Er umm excuse me, was channeling some memes there. For those of you who
don't know, Linode has had a bit of a security oopse on their site. hashed
passwords were retrieved as well as encrypted credit card information and
possibly the keys to the encryption as well.

If you are the paranoid type, update your passwords and if they have you CC
on file you probably need to get a new card.

If you are less paranoid they just doubled the sizes of all their instances
for the dollar.

IDE Comparisons

<pre>Well we have a Mac VS PC flame thread going on and a code formatting thread
why not an IDE thread :)

My go to IDE is NetBeans. It has brilliant Maven support which makes
banging out proof of concept projects easy. Maven projects by in large ARE
NetBeans projects with no extra dot files which means I can check out any
project and open it up without having to do any funny imports. It also
ships with out of the box support for SVN, HG, Git, and *shudders* CVS.
Finally, it has really great JavaScript support. On the downsides the
extensions are very hit or miss (with a preference to miss) and it is ugly
as sin.

Eclipse is a wonderful IDE most of the time. It usually gets support for
newer technologies first and is the default IDE that lots of projects
support via extensions. It has a great synchronize editor and debugger.
The keyboard shortcuts are both fast and easy to learn. Quick Fix is a god
send and it has wonderful refactoring support out of the box. The
workspace metaphor is very nice as well. On the downside it has a bad
habit of running away from you if you have too many extensions and the
maven support is quite craptacular. For instance, build plugins need
Eclipse plugins to work correctly.

I've been learning IntelliJ so my opinions on it aren't fully formed yet.
For those who don't know what Eclipse and NetBeans call Projects IntelliJ
calls Modules. Modules are grouped into Projects which are like Working
Sets in Eclipse and don't have any good analog in NetBeans. You can only
have one Project open at a time in IntelliJ. IntelliJ has brilliant
support for Groovy and I'm sure other languages, and it also has great
Maven support. I don't like the one project rule but I'll get over it.
I'm not sure how I like its facets metaphor either.

Finally, the command line. This is where I do 90% of my git maintenance
and running custom maven goals. If you have a bash shell with proper TAB
complete support you can be quite productive. If you are stuck with
COMMAND.COM I fear for your soul...

<pre>This is partly for fun, but partly for (non-commercial,
non-scientific) research. I am curious as to some coding
practices/standards in places-where-I-do-not-work, and set up a quick
survey-monkey survey to ask. Comments, questions, etc. welcome. I'll
present the result (if there are any) in a week or so to the list.

The schedule appears to be for a single day; however, the event is labeled
as being two days long. What am I missing?

<pre>I noticed on Reddit today that there was a post saying Oracle was changing
applets and web start applications to require code signing using a trusted
CA. However, on their blog and docs, Oracle suggests signing and says that
if your code is unsigned or self signed the user will just get a warning
message and the opportunity to abort execution.

Is the difference now the warning message will always appear where as
before it only appeared if you were requesting elevated permissions?
