As Salaam Aleikum!

I'm running JBSWU_MONITOR v5.2.2 and REXXRPC v2.5.1 and JBSWU_MONITOR.CMD have worked just fine until today when it suddenly have begun to bomb out with some shitty message that's something wrong in the JBSWU_MONITOR.CMD file - here is what's is visible in the JBSWU_Monitor window:

I have NOT changed any settings for JBSWU_Monitor nor for the BOINC6 program either: Seti< at >home runs just fine - I confirmed this by jumping into Process Commander/2 and checking the process list and there was SETIATHOME-6.10..... visible, chugging happily away at some WU.

So why does JBSWU_Monitor.cmd suddenly misbehave? I pulled home a fresh copy from Seti-warp->Files and installed it but no joy - the newly installed JBSWU_MONITOR.CMD bombed out as before.

So can somebody in this group help me getting JBSWU_Monitor to work again, af if not, are there any other software here that let me monitor the progress of my running seti< at >home project?

Misbehaving WU?

As Salaam Aleikum!

My boinc2 Seti< at >home app seems to have trouble with the following WU as listed in the JBSWU_Monitor display below:

$<begin>

Credits as of 02-15-12 16:26:50
                         Total Average
GAEA : 38028.81 1.03
BoincHost 6270800 : 9776.35 1.03

IP Host name/addr : localhost
Queued WU's : 0

Next benchmark : 1 day 23:21:20

Slot/CPU: 0 Project: SETI< at >home
WU: 25no11ak.3420.3753.9.10.189
Percentage done : 0.00%
CPU time : 115844 32:10:44
Time to go (Frm 2): 1024990 284:43:10
Est. Total time : 1024990 284:43:10

$<end>

Look at the CPU figures for the above WU - it will take 284 hours to complete. But here is my problem: As soon as I shutdown the S< at >H appa, whether by doing an 'boinc_cmd --quit' or by a controlled reboot, the processing of the WU will NOT continue from the point it was interrupted but rather the S< at >H will *restart* the WU processing from the very beginning again, meaning that all the work done at the point of the shutdown will have been lost. So far I haven't managed to have my box going unbooted for the whole 284 hours that's needed to complete this WU.

In my Seth< at >home account I have changed the checkpoint interval from 60 to 30 secs. In my client_state.xml file I have the following info undr the heading <active_task>:

$<begin>

<active_task>
    <project_master_url>http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/</project_master_url>
    <result_name>25no11ak.3420.3753.9.10.189_1</result_name>
    <active_task_state>1</active_task_state>
    <app_version_num>610</app_version_num>
    <slot>0</slot>
    <checkpoint_cpu_time>30.000000</checkpoint_cpu_time>
    <checkpoint_elapsed_time>30.000000</checkpoint_elapsed_time>
    <fraction_done>0.000000</fraction_done>
    <current_cpu_time>30.000000</current_cpu_time>
    <swap_size>0.000000</swap_size>
    <working_set_size>0.000000</working_set_size>
    <working_set_size_smoothed>0.000000</working_set_size_smoothed>
    <page_fault_rate>0.000000</page_fault_rate>
</active_task>

$<end>

The two lines beginning with 'checkpoint...' I have manually set to 30 as you can see above. But does the 30.000000 value mean 30 seconds?

But my main problem is this: How do I go about making my box complete this WU? Is the problem solvable in any way or must I abort this particular WU, and if so, how do I abort it in the proper way so that Boinc6 can get and begin processing a fresh (and hopefully) well-behaved WU which will respect the checkpoint function so I don't lose the processing already done when I have to reboot?

Have any of you in this ng have encountered a similar problem? In my Account setting in the preferences meny I have the following under the Computing preferences->Network usage:

Maintain enough tasks to keep busy for at least
(max 10 days).--- days
... and up to an additional10 days

Should I change this or can I let it ride as it is specified now?

Hi all -

Finally eCS-OS/2's limitations on using RAM memory has done me in.
I retain/maintain my eCS 2.0ga system, and still need to use it every
few days for a few hours. But I've shifted all my *daily* operations
(including BOINC/SETI) to Ubuntu/Linux.

SETI-wise, I'll never do anything more with eCS-OS/2.
But I can't transfer (merge) the OS/2-side credits, etc. to the Linux
"machine" - BOINC won't allow it. I can't close out the OS/2-side
"presence". BOINC isn't allowing that either, as far as I can tell.

So I thought to just let it sit - a harmless zombie reminder of
something I'd done during my 20-years-plus love affair with OS/2. NB:
Linux just doesn't grab me the same way OS/2 always did -- and still does.

But BOINC/SETI do work similarly on both Linux and on eCS. I've learned
a lot *here* [seti-warp], and *here*, I feel I'm among friends. So I'd
like to remain a member of this List.

Does anyone have a problem with that?

I've been getting an error with astropulse ever since I installed
boinc6 and it's usually because the executable isn't named correctly in
app_info.xml. I've compared names so many times and not seen a
difference but went through it yet again today. I didn't like the long
indents so went through changing it to two spaces per indent and
noticed that the <api_version> line is missing a < on the close tag.

It reads as:
                    <api_version>6.6.29/api_version>

and should be:
                    <api_version>6.6.29</api_version>

It's wrong in both the seti and the astropulse sections so everything
after the first <api_version> will be included in that until the end of
file.

I don't know whether this will have any effect on those of you who are
seeing huge memory usage but it's fixed the error for astropulse for me
so I will wait and see if I get any work units.

The same error is in the app_info.xml files for the other projects as
well if you are doing any of them.

BOINC6: Multiple *computers* now!

All -

My account (on the web) for BOINC-6 (running SETI-6) tells me I've got
two computers running. Same 'domain' name, and/but with *two separate*
URLs.

Only *one* seems to working correctly (downloads, calculates, uploads,
racks up points, etc).

The other had appeared to be a zombie - more or less - until today.
Now, for the first time, *it's* working on a WU. JBSwuMon reports
"CPU time" climbing steadily, but "percentage done" never changes from
"0.0%" !!

As an aside, on or shortly before Feb 24 it started downloading *clots*
of WUs, only stopping days later when I had > 118 WU < in the queue.
That's c.29 days of work at current rates. They *are* being chomped
on: I'm down to "only" 93 queued now. Obscene.

All these anomalies and a few more on a BOINC installation running since
Feb 14 2011 with *no* apparent problems.

FWIW, I do not believe this/these are problems with any of John's software.
Rather *something's wrong* with the BOINC-6 software, ...or with
operations back home. That is... something *more* is wrong with it/them.

My immediate needs (please?):
Does anyone know how to *kill* the zombie computer?
How do I stop incessant un-asked-for WU downloads?

Hi all. I'm back, using BOINC5.

BUT, despite the length of time, and having received 56 WUs in one big
swoosh on that day, there has been no benchmarking at all since.

Result of that is:
"Next benchmark :904 days -12:54:20" , each and every day since. No
change at all!

WUs are being crunched, uploaded and processed. I'm getting credit,
which gets posted.

Several times I've put "0" in the correct "_rpc" spot in the
client_state.xml file - no effect. "Next benchmark" never changes,
*stays* at exactly what I wrote just above.

--> Any ideas, please?

I want to shift over to BOINC6, try it again anyway, and I want to quit
BOINC5 gracefully. That is, do *all* the current supply (only 3 still
queued), and shut down *before* I get any more.

--> Please, what are the right boinc_monitor.cmd parameters to do that?

Benchmarks

A search for CPU benchmarks on Google turned up several sites that show relative
performance of Intel vs AMD on the sort of calculations that we make in Seti.
I looked at a couple to see what was what. All appeared to be similar in their
relative rankings of processors

So you can judge for yourself which processor will crunch the numbers better.

It just seems to me that a 4 CPU Intel that executes HYPER THREADING such that
it appears to be an 8 CPU model will process 8 WUs as fast or faster than a 4
CPU AMD that does not show itself to be an 8 CPU machine, even if the benchmarks
show the two cpus to be within 10-15% of the same benchmark numbers. Net
result, we get roughly 2x the overall thruput for CPU tasks

Now adding in the NVIDIA GPU to this changes the picture somewhat, but it
suspends work when we are using the machine to browse the web, pay bills, send
email, check news/weather, etc

And last but far from least, what overhead do we lose from the architecture of
the underlying Operating System.
As some have noted, BOINC benchmarks for identical hardware (boot to Linux from
Windows or OS/2) vary with OS decisions

I found an answer to my question

What happens when a user with a Intel newer cpu (i7-7xx, I7-8xx, i7-9xx) cpu,
most of which are offered in 4 processor versions, show up on Seti as an 8 CPU
machine.

In this case, hyperthreading wrorks as we see twice as many WUs in process than
we see with comparable AMD processors.

In my view, this is a benefit for those of us who pursue higher total work on
Seti (and other projects)

Something for all of us to consider when we are thinking about a new computer

Does the SETI Astropulse executable work?

Noticed that BOINC 6 has a Astropulse executable now. I never ran AP WU's before since they weren't supported in BOINC 5. Since SETI seems to have run dry on MB WU's and they have plenty of AP WU's available, I thought I would give AP a try. What do I have to do to get a AP WU? I went back into my SETI preferences and changed the settings to allow AP Wu's but I don't seem to get any. Does the executable get automatically invoked once a AP WU shows up? I don't think I need to join any project or anything since AP WU's are part of the SETI project already. Anyone want to clear up my understanding and also tell me they are crunching AP WU's successfully.

Cheers, Keith

Hi John, I take it from the readme that your widget.cmd script doesn't work? I tried to make a new REXX gauge and it barfs with a error 43. I see some mention in the readme that it has troubles with named_pipes. So exactly what was the REXX gauge widget supposed to show me? Just the basic information about completion percentage? Or more?

I gather I should give up on trying to make this new script work and just stay with the old verion5 script? I am pretty happy with just the basic percentage completion REXX gauge widget I have now.

Seti is generating new workunits. According to the web status page it's

there is some time needed for everyone to get what they want, about 3
days according to my maths.

The advertising is tempting on the latest Intel CPUs Core 7's (7xx, 8xx,
9xx) and Xeons all offer multiple cores and advertise multiple threads of
execution per cpu

So, If and when I get a new computer, will one of these with 4 CPUs run 8
instances of Seti (if I let it do so)

Boinc/Seti v6.x memory issues

Ever since I started using Boinc/Seti v6.x I have had intermittent memory
problems. Since I had also recently started using Firefox v4.x I was not sure
which of these were causing the problems (or if it was something else entirely.)

After asking for help on various newsgroups I have found that the Seti v6.x
uses 266MB of private RAM!! This is an extraordinarily large amount of private
RAM! It severely cuts into the amount of shared RAM and shortage of shared RAM
is probably what is causing my memory-related problems.

On the "My Account" page of the Seti web site I have set my memory usage
preferences to about 20-30MB of RAM and these preferences are written to the
screen when I start up Boinc. But apparently the Seti software is completely
disregarding these settings!

Have any of you who are running the v6.x software had any memory-related
problems?

If any of you who
- are running the v6.x software, and
- have Theseus (or are willing to get and use it), and
- are willing to help
please do the following:
1) Make sure Boinc and Seti are running
2) Start Theseus
3) Under the "System" menu, select "Linear usage by process"
4) In the window that appears start scrolling down. As you scroll the number of
non-blank columns decrease. The first 8 characters on these lines are
addresses. The other columns, the ones which are becoming blank as you are
scrolling, are indicators of the process using the address on the left.
Eventually there will be just the address and one non-blank column. Keep
scrolling until that one non-blank column ends with an"x". Directly above that
"x" will be a number.
5) Double click on that number.
6) In the windows that appears look for the process name. (In my window it is
in single quotes at the end of the first line of text and it follows "...for
process"
7) Close the small window
8) Back on the window where you doubled clicked on the number above the "x",
make note of the address (the first 8 characters) for the line where you
doubled clicked.
9) Report back to me, thorough this list, both the address and the name of the
process.

Thanks to all who help!

If you want to help but you don't have Theseus, you can download it from:

If indeed Seti v6.x is the source of my problems I, for one, will have to
abandon the v6.x software until it is fixed.

6 core CPUs claim 12 threads

Can anyone verify this claim?? I7 cores (700, 800, 900 series) and Xeon cores
have this claim

do we really get 8 seti WUs in process at the same time (assuming Seti resumes
work early next week)
Robert Gammon

Intel says that a 4 core CPU has the ability to run 8 separate threads of
execution.
