publication."

GoodEReader said it was a "unique crowd-sourced ebook authoring
toolkit," while ReadWriteWeb explained it as "Wordpress for books" and
The Digital Reader proclaimed it "Inkling Habitat for the rest of us."

Booktype works with a renderer known as Objavi for producing book
formatted PDF, EPUB, ODT, templated HTML and MOBI and other formats.

Manchester: Open Knowledge Drinks Meetup thisThursday

Hello OKFN folk,

In case any of you are in Manchester this week, either as residents or as
participants of the 2012 Future Everything festival, we're holding an
informal meetup over drinks at Briton's Protection around 7pm this Thursday
and would love to see your faces there.

As usual at OKFN meetups, we'll probably be talking about open knowledge
and sharing some of our coolest tools, and you'll be able to meet some of
our community members who are in town from places as disparate
as Cambridge, London, Scotland and Finland. Most importantly, though, we
hope to learn more from Mancunians themselves about the local open data
initiatives happening in Manchester right now. This is our first hangout in
the area, so it's a good opportunity for us to say hello and meet each
other in-person!

For details and to let us know you're coming, go to the Meetup link here:

Looking forward to meeting many of you on Thursday!

I am writing a paper about open data and archaeology, and I would like to cite
the writings you and others at OKFN have done about componentization and open
data. Is there any academic article I can cite, instead of the web page below?

http://blog.okfn.org/writings/componentization-and-open-data/

And on a more generic level, it would be nice to have a single place to find
academic references to published works (Bibsoup?).

Thanks, ciao

Here is an outrageous story. A tiny little website called geocoder.ca
is being sued by Canada Post. Geocoder.ca has created a crowd-sourced
database of postal codes that is distributed for free under the Open
Database License (ODbL). Canada Post is suing to have the data taken
down and for lost revenue.

Ervin Ruci is the sole operator and owner of geocoder.ca. Ervin has
indicated that his free postal code data is used by OSM. For more info
and to donate to geocoder.ca's defense please visit -
http://geocoder.ca/?sued=1 Please help support open data!

Thanks,

Bernie.

Practical reproducible science;implications for data storage

Hi,

I just wanted to point out this paper in case y'all have not seen it:

http://ged.msu.edu/papers/2012-diginorm/

In particular see here for instructions on running the code yourself,
on Amazon's web services:

http://ged.msu.edu/angus/diginorm-2012/pipeline-notes.html

The short story is that the Amazon virtual machine images and public
data storage allow you to run the exact analysis used for the figures
in the paper.

Starcluster [1] and the IPython notebook and parallel machinery [2]
makes it much easier to use Amazon clusters for this purpose.

According to the author, setting this up was relatively easy:

http://ivory.idyll.org/blog/apr-12/replication-i.html

My question was - what implication does this have for sites dedicated
to data storage? Is practical data storage going to have to live in
the same network as the cloud CPUs on which we run the analysis? And
will the data storage have to include virtual machine images?

Thanks for any thoughts,

Matthew

Dear all,

I have been planning to start a research project on the history of open
data and open knowledge movements (i've only recently finished a report on
the contemporary open data policies -
http://finnish-institute.org.uk/images/stories/pdf2012/being%20open%20about%20data.pdf
).
Sam Leon from OKF encouraged me to post a rough draft proposal to this list
for feedback and possible ideas. In a nutshell the idea is to write a
communal history of open knowledge movement, that is a narrative of how
community members themselves perceive the conceptual development of open
knowledge and its significance for the society.
I think the most urgent issues are the overall feasibility of the project
and also identifying potential funding sources.
Please find the draft attached below. I'd be very glad for all the comments
and ideas and am happy to tell more.

Best wishes,
Antti

*Title*:

Histories of open knowledge

*Project coordinator: *

Antti Halonen

*Contact email: *

antti.halonen.10-hclig2XLE9Zaa/9Udqfwiw< at >public.gmane.org

*Project description: *

Purpose of the project is to write a history of the open knowledge
movement, as perceived by the open knowledge community itself. Now that
open knowledge movement has increasingly started to gain leverage and the
principles of transparency are being introduced in both governmental and
civil-society levels, it is time to compile a narrative of how open
knowledge has emerged as a global movement.

According to one widely accepted view of historiography history is
necessarily a combination of many different histories and several
recollections of the past (for instance, Kalela 2012). Therefore this
project aims at presenting a history of open knowledge like the members of
the global open knowledge community perceive it. Community members are
encouraged to take part in research circles and provide their recollections
on the past. A young historian (project coordinator) will facilitate the
project and conduct the final editing process. The outcome of the project
will be a communal narrative of the conceptual development of open
knowledge.

Methodology of the project will be based on the idea of history as a joint
communal project. The sole authority of a historian is questioned and
instead, the community itself will be given a voice on about what is
relevant and how the subject should be reviewed. Effectively, participants
will be asked to “write their own histories” What kind of issues have
influenced their own thoughts and opinions? Why have they decided to take
part in the open knowledge movement? What events have influenced their own
thought and ideas about the society and the open knowledge movement?

*Timeline*:

Phase 1:

Project coordinator conducts a literature review on the emergence of open
knowledge as a concept and drafts a methodology on how to study the history
of open knowledge in an open manner. (May – June 2012)

Phase 2:

Open knowledge community members are asked to provide their own
recollections on how they got involved in the movement and what are their
perceptions of the open knowledge concept. (June – September 2012)

Phase 3:

During Open Knowledge Festival the project coordinator will lead a history
workshop where the community recollections and perceptions are discussed
and compiled into a draft version of the history. Before the workshop a
renowned professor of history (for instance Jorma Kalela) will give a
keynote speech on history as a joint communal project. (September 2012)

Phase 4:

Project coordinator edits the draft and conducts the final narrative. Final
work is approved by the community and published under open access
regulations. (September – October 2012)

*What is needed:*

Financial support to enable six months’ part-time work (50%, May-October
2012) of the project coordinator (€8.000)

Space for the history workshop at OKFest (two days)

Publisher for the final report

API for candidates of the Irish parliament (Dáil)

To whom it may concern,

Parliamentwatch.org is launching a platform in Ireland, allowing citizens to publicly pose questions to the parlament´s candidates.
Questions and answers are, after they are moderated according to our code of conduct, saved in the online archive and available to the public.

Parliamentwatch strives for more transparency in politics and stronger citizen participation.
In Germany we have already been operating a platform at www.abgeordnetenwatch.de since 2004.

As we want to allow the Irish citizens to ask questions to their members of parliament, we are in need of an API with all the members of the Dáil.
I was wondering whether an API exists that features the candidates of the Irish parliament (the Dáil) and whether anyone could provide me with such an API or knows where I could find it?

For hints or suggestions I would be very grateful.

Kind regards,
Frederik Röse

OKFestival Call for Proposals Open!

Greetings - we are happy to inform you that OKFestival's Call for Proposals
is now officially released!

You can find the Call for Proposals (submission deadlines April 20th and
June 1st) here [1] and our blog posting with the details here [2].

This year, we're opening up more than 2/3 of the programme to you as Guest
Organisers - and I'm hoping much of that programming will come from OKF
networks and the many great projects you're all involved with. This move is
based on our belief that when an event is crowdsourced through a
co-operative combination of civil society representatives, programmers,
data wranglers, students and members of government, the most interesting
results (and relationships!) are facilitated.

Also, if any of you are in Estonia next month, we'll presenting OKFestival
at the Free City Festival [3] in Tallinn – and in the meantime, we’ll see
you online. Looking forward to working with many of you more as you become
Guest Organisers and join us in Helsinki!

Kat [apologies for imminent cross-posting!]

Sorry I am a bit out of context since I just joined to put this into the
mix:

http://worrydream.com/ExplorableExplanations/

and an implementation:
http://www.jengibre.com.ar/ecofacts/

I throw it in because I know you guys are big on open data and when I
saw it I thought I should send it on since it has interesting
applications and implications for open data modeling.

Probably its already widely known and discussed here so apologies if I
just sound like a rather late echo :)

Dear Discussion List,

Please see the email below from our friends over at Coder
Dojo<http://www.coderdojo.com>
.

They're looking for coders who might want to give some free time to help
teach young kids to code *this Saturday*. It's a London event, so you'll
need to be around the capital this weekend if you want to go.

Do email Vicky on vicky-ixmnxAxiBfqgSpxsJD1C4w< at >public.gmane.org if this takes your fancy.

Hi all,

This Saturday in London, Coder Dojo (www.coderdojo.com) is running a free
coding/ programming session for youths at Forward Technology, London NW1
0DU. We are looking for developers to come along as volunteers and teach
the kids some coding basics and help them create something cool like a game
or website. Age is usually 8- 12. It's a pretty open brief and we would
love to have as many mentors to teach the kids as possible. Please email
vicky-ixmnxAxiBfqgSpxsJD1C4w< at >public.gmane.org if you are free and would like to come along. We would
be delighted to welcome you to our team of volunteers! Further details at
http://zen.coderdojo.com/dojo/74.

Best regards,

Vicky

Hi All

I'm a newbie to this list, though I have been tracking OKFN activities for a while. I attended an excellent OKFN licensing clinic recently, and have had a few chats with Sam Leon about working with OKFN on some workshops that the JISC funded 'Discovery' initiative is proposing to run. Info on Discovery at http://discovery.ac.uk/

I had hoped to invite you to a meeting I'm speaking at, and have helped organise, along with folks from the New York Times, Schema.org, the BBC, History Pin and KONA:

'Libraries, Media & The Semantic Web hosted by the BBC' -

http://www.meetup.com/LondonSWGroup/events/56987682/

I'm afraid that by the time I was able to get this message out, the meeting was fully booked, although there is a waiting list for anyone who's keen. I was travelling when the announcement came out, and it booked up very quickly.

I hope this of some interest at least.

I-Semantics deadlines approaching (research/application papers and Linked Data Cup)

Dear all,
Several deadlines regarding the I-Semantics 2012 are approaching and I
would like to give a gentle reminder to all who are thinking about a
submission that *now* would be a good time to start writing ;) Please
note that I would not have sent this email, if the topic was not
relevant to this list, especially if you have worked with linked and
open data. This might also be interesting for the individual working
groups.

The deadline for research and application papers (8 pages for full
papers) is April 13th, 2012. Note that the abstract deadline on April
2nd, 2012 is strict. The full call for papers can be downloaded here:
http://i-semantics.tugraz.at/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/I-Semantics-2012-CfP.pdf

We would also like to draw you attention to the 5th Linked Data Cup
(formerly the triplification challenge). Submission deadline is April
13th, 2012 and the 4 page papers will be included in the ACM
proceedings.
Please have a look at the evaluation criteria for the Linked Data Cup.
We are hoping that you will find them truly challenging:

All the best,
Sebastian
