<pre>Hi all,

This month, for our monthly fellowship interview, we talked with Giacomo
Poderi. He has worked as a translator and editor for FSFE, as well as
completing a master’s degree in Philosophy. Currently he’s working on a
Ph.D in sociology, which looks at the user experience in Free Software
Projects, focusing on the turn-based strategy game ‘The Battle for Wesnoth’.

Please read this interview on

Thank you,

The current long list of readers is very confusing.

(I also think that the name pdfreaders.org is bit misleading since it
does not list the most popular pdf reader in the world but I guess
renaming it to free-pdfreaders.org is already too late...)

From: Fioddor

I don't like the idea of a single-product recomendation. FSFE should remain
AND LOOK LIKE neutral.
Neither a transparent auto-detection: people doing a selection for friends,
users surfing the web from their workplace, fast consultation on the go
(mobile set) looking for sw for the home system, ...).

I'd improve the long list turning it into a table with some criteria.
Filtering (e.g javascript) would also be welcome.

<pre>Hi All,

Probably too late to put out an email to everyone who might be interested.

Glynn Moody has another good article up regarding the upcoming ACTA
proposals. The European Parliament Committee for Legal Affairs (JURI)
looks likely to submit a positive recommendation for ACTA.

The vote is tomorrow.

Glynn has listed a series of MEPs on the committee along with email
addresses and is recommending people pass on their views - he's also
shown a copy of what he has sent.

If anyone has the time and inclination, the article and further
details here: http://blogs.computerworlduk.com/open-enterprise/2012/04/acta-update-xiv/index.htm

Glynn is the same person who recently brought the Open Standards
Consultation to my attention a week or so ago.

Thanks

Hi all!

I would like to notify you that we will have a booth at LinuxTag in
Berlin from May 23 to 26.

It would be great to meet as many of you as possible. We are also
looking for booth volunteers.

It is a four-day event, so we are organising shifts. Your assistance
would help us a lot, even if just for a couple of hours of half a day.

Please refer to me for any question.

Looking forward to meeting you in Berlin!

Pros and cons of different free PDF readers

<pre>Dear discussants,

As you may or may not be aware, we are planning to overhaul the
pdfreaders.org website. As part of the future changes, we are planning
to replace the current table with platform-specific reader
recommendations. Thus, it would be beneficial if you listed the pros
and cons of the free readers you actively use and the criteria we
should consider when evaluating the readers. The reason behind this
request is very simple: Today I had a rather interesting talk with the
leader of Estonian Pirate Party, and we happened to discuss free PDF
readers, and our use cases were just so dramatically different – I use
PDFs for reading only, but for him good annotation system was a must –
that I decided to ask as diverse audience as possible for input.

Thus, could you please tell us why a certain free reader is better
than the alternatives or elaborate on your daily use? Please tell us
what we should consider when we are going to make the final choice on
recommendations.

Thanks.

Some ideas:
-&gt; Existence of a browser plug-in (the idea is from Hannes, I think)
-&gt; Annotation system

Faithfully yours,

Hello List,

sorry for the delay in working on the leaflet about software patents. We
had a really high workload the last 4 weeks, combined with a high rate
of illness among the members of our team. Therefore, I was not able to
work on this issue.

So, let's start again:
Our leaflet about software patents that we use at the booth, is really
outdated and should be updated. Please help me to update our leaflet. I
opened an Etherpad where I inserted the text of the actual leaflet and
some additional text from my side:
http://policy.etherpad.fsfe.org/7
PW: SWPAT2012

I think, the length that the text on the etherpad has now is
approximately the text length we can use on the leaflet. So, when you
add some text then try to delete some text elsewhere, if possible : )

Thank you very much for you participation and ideas,

best regards,
Erik

Hi all,

Please check our monthly Fellowship interview (this month we met Guido
Günther), which was published last Friday.

Guido is being for a long time a substantial contributor to the Debian

Article about a professional magician who relies on Free Software for

Software.

Possibly relevant to any VJs out there.

Thanks to Anna Morris in Manchester for the link.

Let’s end all Free Software “projects” quickly!

<pre>I'll recommend readig Bernhard's article "Let’s end all Free Software
“projects” quickly!"
http://blogs.fsfe.org/bernhard/2012/03/lets-end-all-free-software-projects-quickly/

A “project” is always temporary, in the narrow sense of the term. Some
Free Software people use “project” to refer to long lasting
initiatives instead. By adopting the more widespread use of the term,
Free Software initiatives enhance their ability to reflect upon
themselves and to communicate better towards others. To make a
distinction between an initiative, projects and products enables a
group to more clearly speak about their individual interests and how
this leads to successful cooperation. Let us end the misleading use of
“project” and get into concluding more Free Software project faster!

Web Sprint in Manchester, April 21-22

<pre>Dear all,

Andreas, Sam and I have been thinking about the opportunity to meet up
and achieve some work on FSFE's web site. The idea of a Web Sprint to
gather forces and fix dozens of bugs sounded like the best option.
This is why we are proud to announce that the next Web Sprint will take
place in Manchester, April 21st and 22nd.

After the success of October 2010's Web Sprint which saw the advent of
fsfe.org's new design[1], we hope to fix lots of bugs, offer new
functionalities and more important, have a great deal of fun with nice
people!

How you can help and join:
- meet us there: the more the merrier! We welcome all participants who
want to give a try at improving FSFE's website(s)!
- join us online: even if you can't be in Manchester, fixing bugs
remotely is of course possible and wanted!
- give us feedback and ideas: not that much of a web designer or
programmer? Browse fsfe.org, and while reading about things that matter,
tell us what you think. We welcome all comments and ideas, there's
always room for improvement. You are, we are the users!

If you wish to join us physically and you don't have a place to stay
yet, Sam knows a hotel where you can stay for approx. 35€ a night. Let
us know!

We will further announce the precise location and a more detailed
planning soon.

We're all looking forward to it!

Thanks,
The Web Team

Software patents leaflet

<pre>-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Dear all,

Our leaflet about software patents that we use at the booth, is really
outdated and should be updated as soon as possible. As we already had a
discussion on internal mailing lists, you are now all up to date with
your arguments and knowledge : )

So, please help me to update our leaflet. Therefore, I opened an
etherpad where I inserted the text of the actual leaflet and spontaneous
ideas about what we can included in the leaflet:
http://policy.etherpad.fsfe.org/7

I think the length that the text on the etherpad has now is
approximately the text length we can use on the leaflet.

Thank you very much for you participation and ideas,

best regards,
Erik

Democratic election and consultation tools

<pre>There are local government elections in my area coming up; the the usual
occasion for candidates to nod to local concerns in a way that will
ultimately fail to distinguish them in any way from eachother.

I spoke with one candidate who sites on the Neighbourhood Management Board
which I chair to discover if he had any intentions of making use of new
technology (or not so new) to engage with constituents and undertake
straw-polls and opinion gathering.

It appears that such things are not supported by local party office but
depend on the efforts and interest of individual candidates. I can only
suppose that the main parties fear obsolescence in the same way that the
music moguls do - when vote opinion may be conveyed rapidly and precisely
to able administrators the political parties will be demoted to special
interest groups lobbying the voters instead of the other way around.

However the candidate expressed an interest in such public consultation
tools as might be made available if the expertise could be provided.

After some thought, though, it is hard to imagine something more useful or
usable than a facebook-poll which allows simultaneously the voting on
propositions and gathering of opinions - but of course only for those who
use facebook.

I therefore think it was to consult here and ask what systems for
collaboration and engagement are known to readers of this mailing list, and
what experience (if any) do readers have with such systems.

Presently it is all too easy for elected representatives to not quite be
able to do things they were planning on not doing, and doing with glory
that which was already planned. Such tools as may bring like minded
citizens together to understand their problems better and the strength of
support would help ensure proper representation and accountability.

Comments?

thanks

Sam
