Shadow Session fails to attach

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my FreeNX server in that everything works find except I can't get shadowing to work.

My setup is as follows:

Server OS: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
FreeXN Version: NXSERVER - Version 3.2.0-74-SVN OS (GPL, using backend: 3.5.0)
Client OS: Windows 7
NX Client: NoMachine NX Client for Windows Version 3.5.0-9

The clients can all connect and disconnect sessions on the server. I have my shadow client configured so the Desktop is set as "Shadow". Once connected I get a list of available sessions. If I select a session and press Attach I get an error message "The NX Client received an error from the server. Please check the details for more information".

I've listed the contents at the bottom of this email.

If I check the suggested session file. The contents of which are:
Error: Aborting session with 'Server is already active for display 2003
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X2003-lock
        and start again'.

If I remove the lock file and retry I still get the errors and the session file now contains...
Error: Aborting session with 'Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running'.

I'm not sure what it is that I've missed or got wrong in my setup. Can anyone help?

Many thanks,

Len

All of a sudden, I can no longer log into my server with FreeNX. It used to
work fine. I can login via ssh with the same username and password. When I
try to login with FreeNX, I get the error message below. The password is
correct, ssh has been configured to accept password authentication, and
config files look correct.

like a dream...until more than 2 people tried to

yum install on my linux host, set connection
for XDM, cut from the key on windows, paste
to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2.

Node.conf only has
ENABLE_FORCE_ENCRYPTION=1
ENABLE_PASSDB_AUTHENTICATION=1 (nxserver -adduser, --passwd)
ENABLE_SSH_AUTHENTICATION=1

run nxsetup -test
get a few warnings about the server config (unmodified)
It checks the nxserver connection, shows my banner

Fatal error: could not connect to NX server. The following are examples of ...

And indeed when I try to run nxmachin on windows it fails and when
I look at details, it says,

nxviewer vs vncviewer

I have googled and been to !M KB without luck, so I guess I need to ask you good people!

I have a 12.04 Ubuntu server with freenx installed and working fine for X apps. I can connect from remote machines and run either a DE (e.g., lxde) or individual windowed apps (LibreOffice, Firefox, etc.). I am using the NX client on my 2 remote machines, one Ubuntu, one Windows 2000.

Now I want to connect to the freenx server and have it proxy a VNC session from a Windows machine to my remote client. To clarify... the freenx server (aka "proxy machine") and the windows machine running a VNC server (aka "VNC host") are on the same (workplace) network. From home I want to NX from my "remote client" to the nx proxy machine and be able to manipulate the desktop of the VNC host.
After "connected", "authenticated" and "downloading session data" confirmation messages, I get "connection error" message. I've turned debug to level 7 via node.conf on the server. Checking the session log in .nx/ under my home directory on the server, I see a single line:

/usr/lib/nx/nxnode: line 818: /usr/lib/nx/nxviewer: No such file or directory

First, please correct me if I have a fundamental misunderstanding since most
of the vnc related threads I've found concern accessing the display :0 session on the
freenx proxy machine, in a 2 machine scenario. I'm attempting a 3
machine scenario, which the docs seem to show is a normal use case.

From my reading it sounds to me like nxviewer is no longer used, and vncviewer should be sufficient. vncviewer is installed and working on the server, nx proxy machine. I've also confirmed that x11vnc, xvnc4viewer, freenx-vnc and tightvncserver are all now installed. "nxpasswd" also exists in /usr/lib/nx.

I've toyed with all the relevant node.conf settings I can find, namely "ENABLE_EXTERNAL_NXVIEWER", "COMMAND_VNCVIEWER", etc. But that's probably the wrong path.... the real question to me is why is it trying to run nxviewer instead of vncviewer?

I am afraid I'm doing something stupid, but can't for the life of me figure out what :-)

Any help Very Much Appreciated !!!

Thanks,

MikeM

PS: I sudo apt-get dist-upgrade frequently :-)

(upgraded libraries/new dependencies?) other than a packaging effort..
- Where would you recommend I start?

My approach would be
  apt-get source <package>

CentOS6 FreeNX never starts session

I've run freenx successfully before, but on RHEL5 32-bit (x86). Now I've just installed freenx on TWO different CentOS6.x 64-bit (x64) servers, but neither is working.

In both cases, I can login, and get an empty, black X11 window. I know it's working that far, because I can connect to the server, set my DISPLAY to :100x and run /etc/X11/xinit/Xsession to start my window manager properly and use my NX session. Obviously, that's not good enough, and I need to get NX launching the session on login like it should, but nothing in the logs (~/.nx/ and /var/log/nx/) indicates any problem. --check is pretty worthless, as it always complains.

I wrote a tiny shell script that, when run, just creates a file in /tmp, filled with the date and a few user variables. If I tell the nxclient to run that command as my shell, it is NEVER executed, as I've never seen a file show up, after dozens of attempts. I have SELINUX disabled, and nothing is notably pathological about my installations... One of the two is pretty plain vanilla CentOS6.x. Now I'm trying with OpenNX, but no change.

I'd appreciate any help tracking down where this process is hanging-up. I'm amazed there aren't more reports of problems like this, because I'm seeing a 100% failure rate on CentOS6.

preventing data transfers over SSH,yet still allow NX sessions.

I was wondering if it is possible to configure sshd_config, possibly using the ForceCommand keyword, to prevent arbitrary command execution/data transfers on the same host which is providing the NX sessions. For example I can configure sshd_config with:

ForceCommand /bin/bash

..which subsequently prevents, scp, rsync over ssh, and even something like "ssh remoteHost 'cat /etc/passwd'", but still allows interactive ssh sessions with a bash shell.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can provide NX sessions to a remoteHost, yet prevent any data transfers to/from that sameHost over ssh? Using the example above can I ForceCommand the NX tunneling bits, and if so what are they? Or can NX be configured not to use ssh?

Thank you for your time.

x2go, pulseaudio etc

Nick

I switch a long time ago from FreeNX and also as a paid user of NX to x2go.

x2go is just a great remote desktop and comes with native clients for Mac,
Windows & Linux.

x2go implements its own "server" and clients.

There is a also a Python based x2go client called PyHoca.

All is Open Source

x2go audio (pulseaudio), printing, remote file shares etc. all work well
without tinkering and it was for me a lot simpler to install.

If you use debian or ubuntu the installation takes 5 minutes

*on server*

   1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:x2go/stable
   2. sudo apt-get update
   3. sudo apt-get install x2goserver x2goserver-xsession
   4. then add all users to the x2gouser "group"
      - sudo adduser <username> x2gouser

*on linux client*

   1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:x2go/stable
   2. sudo apt-get update
   3. sudo apt-get install x2goclient

only other thing you "might" have to do is edit your /etc/ssh/sshd_config
file to
match the following.. then restart ssh (sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart)

*# Change to yes to enable challenge-response passwords (beware issues with*
*# some PAM modules and threads)*
*ChallengeResponseAuthentication yes*
*
*
*# Change to no to disable tunnelled clear text passwords*
*PasswordAuthentication yes*

some linux versions "may" have those 2 entries set to NO or commented out
(same as NO).

*Thats it !*

If you are on Windows just download & install the Windows version as you
would any other Windows app.
Mac is supported but I don't use a Mac so you'd have to ask on the x2go
Users mailer how to do it.

When you start the x2go client you create a "session"
it will ask you for:
IP address or DNS name of the x2go server
login ID
and you need to select what "desktop" you use (Unity, Gnome, xfce, lxde etc)

Click the "connection" tab and you will see a slider. The purpose of that
is to tell x2go client/server
how much compression to utilize.

If you have a fast internet (I have 17 Mbps)... just move it all the way to
LAN.

then save the profile
Click the newly made "session" icon picture on the right
enter your password
answer the linux question about an "unknown server" and your desktop should
pop up.

*NOW... all that being said realize that with BOTH Ubuntu Unity and with
ANY Gnome system the following:*

Starting in Ubuntu 12.10 there is NO Unity 2D any longer
Starting with Gnome 3.0 there is NO gnome-fallback any longer

NO Matter WHAT remote desktop you use (NX, FreeNX, x2go etc) ... as far as
I know... NONE of them will be capable of support
Unity 3D or Gnome 3.0 remote desktops because BOTH of those will be using
HW video acceleration which as of now no solution is in place.

NoMachine's website has a notice about this as well.

So... that being said if EITHER of the above apply to you the choices are
stay with your distro where you can use Unity-2d or gnome-fallback.
-or-
use one of the other "desktops" (lxde, xfce etc)...

For Ubuntu the 12.04 Long Term Support (LTS) release is good for 6 more
years so if you use that you can just select Unity or Gnome
in x2go and you should be good to go because x2go will auto-magically use
Unity-2D or gnome-fallback ... whichever is the case

I'm assuming x2go on Debian is the same because some of the core developers
use Debian.

Interesting...any particular reason?

Is x2go compatible with the other array of NX clients? It looks like it
uses the same NX agent components, and since we use a combination of FreeNX
and the commercial NX offerings, I like the fact that one client will
(mostly) work with both of the servers.

I believe the newest versions of the commercial NoMachine system use PulseAudio to forward sound from Linux servers over to pretty much any client. I was wondering if there are any efforts underway to do the same for FreeNX, and how much effort it would be to replace the ESD sound infrastructure with Pulse?

Seamless / rootless session, allowing only certain application to start.

Hi and sorry if this has been asked before.

I am having trouble finding the needed information online anywhere.

NX version:
NX> 1000 NXNODE - Version 3.2.0-74-SVN OS (GPL, using backend: 3.3.0)

I have a need to do two things. (in FreeNX or commercial NX server)

1.Force an application to be started on session start with no
desktop (this I have partly got working by using the
NODE_AUTOSTART="/usr/bin/firefox" setting in node.cfg
(Not without desktop showing however) it seems the
ENABLE_ROOTLESS_MODE="1" does not function as I had thought it would.

2.Only allowing this application to be launched, all other NX
client configured commands should be overridden so that this one
application starts.

So in short, I want the user to be presented with a login application
when they are logged on through the NX server, also I want the desktop
to be hidden and not usable for the end user.

I have not found any working way to do this, some information I found
about nxacl that I could not get working in our FreeNX so far.
I was also not able to do this in the Commercial NX server.

Has anyone tried something like this and got it working.
I would be grateful for any hints.

Regards,

Tom

FreeNX & NoMachine Player - Connection Issues

I'm getting sporadic behavior trying to connect NoMachine Player (the replacement for NX Client in the 4.x NoMachine release) with a FreeNX-based server. First, let me state that getting NX Player working with FreeNX is a must - we need to connect Mac clients to our servers, and, since the only Intel-based version of the NX Client for Mac is NX Player 4.x, going back to the 3.5 client is not an option, at least for Mac-based clients. So, for those who would suggest using the "known good" versions of NX Client 3.5.x, that's not really feasible in my situation.

So, here are the software versions I'm using:
- OpenSuSE 12.1
- FreeNX 0.7.3, plus a few patches
- NX 3.5.0
- NX Player 4.0.181 Preview 6 (currently on Linux)

As far as the client goes, I can successfully connect my NX Player client to the NoMachine Virtual Workstation for Linux 4.x preview software, so I'm fairly certain that network issues can be ruled out here. Also, I can successfully connect to FreeNX running on CentOS5, so it actually seems to be some interaction here between FreeNX and something in OpenSuSE. Hopefully someone can point out what, or at least help me better nail it down. Here's what I'm seeing:

- Connections fail *most* of the time - maybe 1 connection in 10 works perfectly fine, but the rest fail with the exact same error.
- It does not matter what Window Manager I try to use - KDE4, XFCE4, GNOME - all seem to fail equally well.
- This is not trying to resume an existing session, just create a new one.
- I've tried local users and network users on my systems, and that doesn't really seem to make a difference, either, so not a home directory, LDAP, or NFS issue.
- I see the following message on the screen on NXPlayer when I try to create a new, GNOME, for example, session:
The connection with the server was lost.
Error is 22: Invalid argument.

- If I choose the option to save the logs and then go look at the session logs, I see the following:

** ERROR **: Cannot open display:
/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc: line 159: 28167 Trace/breakpoint trap xfce4-session

So, can anyone shed any light on what's going on here?? First, it seems like the server and client are both pointing the finger at each other saying it's the other's fault. But then there's this error about Unable to open display?? I should also note that I have tried and successfully been able to do the "ssh -X <hostname> nxagent" test - works fine, once it's running I can open up items inside that display, etc. Also, on NXPlayer, if I do a custom session and specify xterm as the command to run, that seems to work every time. So, perhaps it's a timing thing - the window manager trying to start before X is available, or maybe X is timing out too fast before the window manager can start? Also, what happens in "Stage '10'"? This is a fairly consistent error - failure negotiating the s
ession in stage '10' - but I cannot find any reference to this error around, nor can I figure out what stage 10 is supposed to be.

Thanks, in advance,
Nick

Black Screen with Mouse Cursor After Successful Auth

Hi All,

My server crashed over the weekend, and I had to clean up the mess left
behind by Xorg and X Server. Needless to say, I finally got X working
again, but now, I'm unable to login via freenx using my typical user
account. When I do login, the authentication is successful, and I'm just
left with a black screen with a mouse cursor. I know X is running, as the
process ID shows up. So, to start, I deleted all gnome cache, deleted all
sessions, restarted the nxserver and freenx-server service, and deleted
stuff in the /tmp/user-orbit folder. None of that helped. What's weird is
that I created a new user, added the user to the allowed SSH list, and
tried connecting using the same settings. With the new user, I can get in
and see my gnome desktop. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04. I've looked at
countless forum posts where others have had the same problem and tried
everything. Nothing has fixed it for the main user account. I have
logging enabled in the nxserver, and no errors are reported in the
nxserver.log or in the session cache files themselves.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can try or where to start?

I am querying here that if anybody knows about where to get or how to build
the NX client as a Firefox plugin (if there is any, or similar) for
accessing FreeNX servers.

Using freenx to connect to a Windows Desktopserver(aka Terminalserver)

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi

I have found an issue in the freenx implementation that I think might
be a bug:

When using freenx to connect to a Windows terminalserver I always got
an error from that, saying that it couldn't find a program named
/usr/bin/nxdesktop_helper and the user was logged out immediately,
whereas connecting to a normal Windows workstation worked fine.

After some digging I came up with the following line in the script
/usr/bin/nxdesktop_helper on the freenx server:

set -- -u "$agent_user" -k "$agent_keyboard" -d "$agent_domain" -f -s
"$windows_app" $AGENT_EXTRA_OPTIONS_RDP "$agent_server"

and the value of $windows_app apparently is
"/usr/bin/nxdesktop_helper", so the terminal server tries to run the
said program on login and pathetically fails to do so... voilà the
user is immediately logged out.

As a workaround I just deleted the '-s "$windows_app"' bit in the
above line and connecting to my terminal server works fine:

set -- -u "$agent_user" -k "$agent_keyboard" -d "$agent_domain" -f
$AGENT_EXTRA_OPTIONS_RDP "$agent_server"

I fail to see though whether there are scenarios where the -s
parameter for rdesktop is actually useful?
(Trying to run '/usr/bin/nxdesktop_helper' on a windows machine
obviously isn't...)

Regards
Tobias

Hi

I'm new within this mailing list, so please bear with me if I should
start asking FAQs...

I finally succeeded in setting up a freenx server and so far
everything is working fine. The goal is ultimately to allow the user
in a samba-Domain to access some Windows-Clients through freenx. As I
understand it this is internally accomplished through the rdesktop
program which allows some handy options (like -d for the logon-domain
and -r disk: for adding shares).
Now my question obviously is whether and how I can add those options
for rdesktop to the nxserver configuration.

Regards
Tobias

ctrl key behavior differs for same client on differentmachines [SOLVED]

Way back in 2008 I posted a question about needing to escape the ctrl
key when using NX/FreeNX. Nobody replied, but others may have
encountered the same annoyance. Many OS installations later, it came
back to haunt me, but this time I realized the solution to the problem.
I post in case anybody else encounters it:

When using gnome on linux, there is an option under 'Preferences' --->
'Mouse and Touchpad' to 'Show position of pointer when the Control key
is pressed'. (Handy when using a notebook in a high-glare environment.)
When that box is un-checked there longer is any need to escape the ctrl
key in NX sessions.

I've fruitlessly looked all over for a solution to this.

While running nxclient-3.2.0-14 on my Fedora 9 desktop to access
nxserver 3.0.0-74 on a Fedora Core 4 machine things work beautifully,
but when using the identical client (installed from the same .rpm file)
on my notebook -- also running Fedora 9 -- there results an annoying
ctrl key behavior. On my notebook, the ctrl key works (but only
sometimes) if preceded by the alt key. `Escaping' a ctrl key is pretty
useless for someone who lives inside emacs.

Anybody know a fix/workaround that will liberate my ctrl key?

    thanks,
    -Mark

Is there a similar viewer (HTML5, Flash, or - as a last resort - Java)
that uses the faster NX protocol? The only NX clients I can find today
are "full" clients, which require a download/install and have no
view-only mode.

Also posted here in case you want some StackExchange cred:

startsession --link="lan" --imagecompressionmethod="-1" --type="unix-application" --shpix="0" --shmem="0" --application="xeyes" --encryption="0"

As it is shown, I want to disable shared memory and shared pixmap emulation (--shpix="0" --shmem="0"), but I get always this log when I start my nxproxy instance:

Why it is happening? I want to use a different local X server without this features and I want to disable both. How can I do it?
