Howdy all.

Just trying to inject some more life into a place that's not Facebook.  

Bink and Rhys - sorry to hear about your respective situations.  I wish both families strength in trying times.

For a quick two second update from me - I graduated earlier this year, I move to Cincinnati next week, and start a new career the week after.  Things are moving both too slow and too fast at the same time.

The Long Surrender, etc...

I am finally making my way through The Long Surrender and am wanting
to like it.  Karin's voice is beautiful as always and the lyrics are
amazing as always, but if I weren't at work I think I would be falling
asleep.  Not that delicate music to slow down the pace of a day is
bad, but I was hoping for something closer to FfR.  I guess those days
are gone.  Is this an album that needs another listen to grab me or is
this an album that needs to be listened to at the right time?  What
are your initial thoughts of it?

On a different note, what is everybody listening to?  What were your
top 10 albums of 2010? Or for that matter if I told you that you could
only download ONE album from ANY year what would it be?  As I just
stated in a previous message I have Rhapsody Music service now and am
looking to dowload and listen to new music.

Oh my gosh, you guys have got to catch up on new Over the Rhine!  "Drunkard's
Prayer" and "Snow Angels," (a Christmas album) are two of my favorite OTRs, 
and Trumpet Child is good, too.  I just got the newest one, "Long Surrender," and
am still letting it sink in.  You really *need* to hear "Drunkard's Prayer," seriously. 
Go on Youtube and search for some of the songs from it....I Want You to Be My
Love, Bluer, and Lookin' Forward are some of my favorites.  Little Town and
New Redemption Song are lovely from Snow Angels.  But it's all good.  Some 
really jazz-infused numbers on all the records, too, look for those.  Love them
on Youtube now, buy them when you can!  One of their live albums I got has a
version of Poughkeepsie on it that slays me everytime.  They've been issuing live
albums after the end of the Christmas touring season every year for the last several
years.  I have 4 volumes of those.  "Live from Nowhere."  So much to love.  So much
food for thought.    miss Y

a hello and a warm winter meal

Hello all,
The list has been quiet for a bit, so I thought that I would wake it up a  
bit and share a recipe with you that I made up last night. We have tons of  
pumpkin in the freezer and more to butcher, so I've been making pumpkin  
based things for most meals -- pumpkin bread for breakfast, pumpkin soup  
for lunch and pumpkin lasagna for dinner. Here's my very own pumpkin  
lasagna recipe:

All measurements are approximate, as I didn't measure diddly-squat.

1 box of lasagna noodles boiled in salt water
1 lbs ricotta
1 large bag of shredded mozzarella
half a cup (ish) of parmesan
1/2 nut of nutmeg, ground
2 tblsp canola oil
6 cloves minced garlic
1 medieum yellow onion, diced
an 8 x 8 dish full of baked and mashed pumpkin (bake raw 1 in cubes for 1  
hr at 350, then mash)
kosher salt
two very generous shakes of cayenne
about 2 tsp of green sage based poultry seasoning (I used Bell's)
some fresh ground pepper
heavy cream (but next time will use half and half)
onion powder
garlic powder

In a blender, combine ricotta with about half the bag of mozzarella and the  
parmesan. Grate the nutmeg into this mixture and pulse a couple of times to  
stir in it.

In a large sauce pan, heat the oil and add the minced garlic and diced  
onion. Cook until transluscent, the add the pumpkin and cook for a few  
minutes, stirring constantly. Add some salt, pepper, cayenne and Bells and  
mix in a couple splashes of cream. Add a little more salt, after adding the  
cream (to taste). Don't add so much cream that its soupy, just enough so  
that the whole pumpkin mixture wants to hold together.

Grease 9 x 13 lasagna dish. Layer the noodles, then ricotta mixture.  
Noodles, pumpkin mixture. Noodles, ricotta. Noodles, pumpkin mixture dotted  
with what's left of the ricotta mixture. Noodles. Set aside.

On stove heat up some of the cream (about a cup) add salt, pepper, onion  
powder and garlic powder (truthfully, real onion and garlic sauteed in oil  
and then cream poured on top would probably be better here, but I was  
lazy). Stir constantly while it heats up and thickens. Drizzle on top layer  
of noodles and into any cracks and crevices in the lasagna. On top of  
lasagna sprinkle the other half of the mozzarella and top with a dusting of  
Parmesan. Bake at 350 for 1/2 hour, or until mozzarella starts to turn  
golden brown.

If you crave meat, I think that Italian sausage would be a good addition.
